DeMint Promotes Redistributing Power to States (DeMint would dismantle many federal departments)
Roll Call ^ | 2010-09-19 | Melanie Starkey

Posted on 09/19/2010 4:41:32 PM PDT by rabscuttle385

Sen. Jim DeMint argued for a “devolution of power out of Washington,” saying Sunday that “the fact is, education probably would work a lot better without the Department of Education.”

The South Carolina Republican had been asked on CNN’s “State of the Union” whether candidates whom he and the tea party movement have endorsed are too far out of the political mainstream. When host Candy Crowley gave Sharron Angle’s call to abolish the Education Department as an example, DeMint said, “She’s very bold to say it.” Angle is the GOP candidate challenging Majority Leader Harry Reid (D) for his Senate seat in Nevada.

I would support a devolution of power out of Washington for education, health care, transportation, and I’ve introduced a lot of legislation for that, too,” DeMint added, saying the power should go to the states. “And you can do it in a common-sense, reasonable way that doesn’t disrupt any of the activities that we support.”

Devolution seems to be quite popular in Britain. It’s working brilliantly there... I dare say it should work quite well here in the USA also.

There is the glimmering hope that the GOP will grow a pair and stop the “my good friends across the aisle” crap. This is our Constitution and republic at stake and the goal should be to do everything possible to put the democrat party out of business and dismantle their control structures. There is the glimmering hope but I won’t bank on it; I’ve been disappointed before.

If we end up just having 1 party support the constitution then we will either have constitutional government half the time, or we will have no competing party system.

We need to find away to force the Federal governess into compliance with the Constitution from both parties.

I think the Democrats in the Pot Nullification got it right.

Let no republican apposes pot nullification of other states except in their own State as a matter of their own State’s drug laws.

Let us stop respecting the Federal court’s choices to support their appointers boundless power.

Haven’t heard why, yet. In Alaska, Murkowski is running against the Tea Party candidate, who won the primary. All the Alaska GOP is still endorsing her, and I suspect many of the GOP mainstream are, too. (She went back to DC to get re-assurances that she should mount a write-in campaign.) Seems like, behind the scenes, elitist Republicans will work against the conservatives of the party. Third party — wouldn’t have that problem.

The US government has no business being in the land business. Federal lands need to be handed over to the states for them to do with as they will.

What about military bases? And should Area 51 be given to the aliens?

There's an easier and more productive solution. Take over the second party.

DeMint is saying precisely the words that need to be said. He’s right, and if he runs for President we at the ranch are behind him 100%.

But there is another way to de-fang the federal wolf that can be done by citizens and elected officials at the state level, whether or not Congress remains in Democrat control: Nullification.

The States will reign supreme, just as was intended by the Framers.

AMEN! to that. Just finished it up and it's fantastic. We HAVE the mechanism to dismantle the Federal Leviathan, it's called the 10th Amendment, and it does not hinge on national elections, the power is right there in the states. And once the ball gets rolling and the people get a taste of their personal sovereignty once again, we can unravel the whole shebang - peacefully!

I would like to see a lot more talk of Nullification here on FR (ok that means I should start posting more I suppose).

“The six wealthiest counties surround Washington DC.”

Yep that’s money “redistributed” from the rest of the United States.

And....3...2...1...do you hear the shrieking in Republican HQ’s across the nation? We’re not supposed to say things like this you understand, it “scares” soccer moms or so they say.

Glad he said it. Watch for other Republicans to be asked and run from it but DeMint’s election is secure, he’s not a “scary” face, and if he’s being asked about he’ll take some of the heat off Angle.

The great irony of these “Federal” agencies is the anti-federalism of their existence.

“Our federal government should be no more than 20% - 25% of its current size.”
///////////////////////////////////////////////////////////

I would say that is overly generous

You may be right. The only reason I believe it shouldn’t be scaled back anymore is because of our military. I don’t believe we need to be all over the world so we can cut back some but we’ll have to maintain a good military.

Dislike what? Abolishing the Dept. of Education (along with half the other agencies)? Love it. Announcing it and giving desperate Democrats on constant defense something to run against and demagogue? Not at all. We again nothing from this. We already have the momentum, in every way.

While I think I understand what he means, disrupting activities, which have nothing to do with reasonability or common sense but the present Congress does supports is a big part of what we want to do.
