Joe Hallett commentary: Cuyahoga County scandal means more trouble for Democrats

Sunday, September 19, 2010 03:02 AM

The Columbus Dispatch

On Valentine's Day in 1998, Jimmy Dimora, chairman of the Cuyahoga County Democratic Party, stood at a podium and told 431 members of the party's executive committee that his sex life was just fine.

"Boy, do I feel good today," Dimora brayed. "My wife took good care of me this morning."

Turns out others have been taking care of the Italian Stallion, according to a 139-page federal indictment against Dimora unveiled last week in Cleveland.

Quoting Dimora's wire-tapped conversations, the indictment describes in salacious detail how the Democratic county commissioner traded his influence for sex with prostitutes and at least one woman seeking a job.

Dimora, the federal documents say, referred to the women who sated his sexual appetite as "broads" and "whores," and even laughed to a contractor who paid $1,000 for his tryst with a prostitute in Las Vegas that she was "a little chatty." Somewhere, Tony Soprano is blushing.

Robert T. Bennett, former chairman of the Ohio Republican Party and a lifelong Clevelander, called the indictment "X-rated."

Late last week, the Cleveland media were saturated with newspaper and TV images of FBI agents leading Dimora away from his home in handcuffs and chains.

After reading the kinky indictment, Jerry Austin, a Cleveland-based Democratic consultant, deadpanned, "Maybe when they came to arrest Dimora he asked to be put in chains."

But Austin and his fellow Democrats aren't laughing. "It ain't good," he said.

Cleveland has long been known for its ribald politics and dysfunctional government, but the scandal finally blossoming after a two-year FBI investigation is shocking even by Cleveland standards. Indictments are being handed out like cash on Election Day in East Cleveland.

Former County Auditor Frank Russo already has copped a plea to taking more than $1 million in bribes and kickbacks, and he likely will spend 21 years in prison. Judges, a host of other politicians and their aides, along with pay-to-play contractors, also could be jail-bound.

Fed-up Cuyahoga County voters have changed their system of governance. In January, an elected county executive will replace the board of commissioners. Even the favorite to win the county executive post, Lakewood Mayor Ed FitzGerald, the state Democratic Party's new golden boy, is implicated in the scandal.

The last thing Gov. Ted Strickland, U.S. Senate candidate Lee Fisher and other statewide Democratic candidates needed was a nightmarish scandal in their geographic base six weeks before the election and a dozen days before the start of early absentee voting on Sept. 28.

"It's kind of the nail in the coffin," Bennett said.

Strickland, who called for Dimora to resign as commissioner a year ago, sought to mitigate the damage: "The governor is disappointed and angry, especially at those who were given public trust and then abused that trust," said his spokesman, Keith Dailey. "Those who are found guilty should receive the most severe punishment."

The odds already were stacked against Strickland & Co. Angry Ohio voters are poised to throw out incumbents, and the excitement that buoyed Democrats in 2008 has dissipated. Any scenario for winning included a strong turnout in the Cleveland media market, home to nearly 40 percent of the state's Democrats. More than 15 percent of Ohio's Democrats live in Cuyahoga County alone.

"Dimora and these guys were responsible for turning out the vote," Austin said. "There isn't going to be anybody turning out."

Russo uttering the word guilty and Dimora in chains: "It doesn't take a genius to figure out what kind of spots to put on the air," Austin said.

"If these were Republicans," Bennett said, "I'd be telling them to pack their bags."

If we had a real AG instead of some Maoist pal of Hussein filling the post this guy would be destined to "take good care" of various Bubbas at Club Fed.But as it stands he needn't worry because the best place to hide a Federal crime these days is under Holder's nose.

"More than 15 percent of Ohio's Democrats live in Cuyahoga County alone."

Yeah; the Democrats that make up the Ohio Democrats are the parasite-types and Union members (such as UAW, USW, AFL-CIO, AFSCME, and work for Progressive-controlled cities like Cleveland, Cincinnati, Toledo, etc.):

His partner in crime, county auditor Frank Russo, just made a deal--he gets 21 years in prison. Russo's kid gets 18 months. Dimora is going down, no doubt about it, even though he has, incredibly, pled not guilty to all charges. Some are actually questioning his mental stability given the abundance of smoking guns turned up by the FBI investigations.

My home town.

All the factories are gone.

All they manufacture now is votes for Democrats.

In 2006 Republicans lost several statewide elections, including the governorship, because of a scandal involving a relatively small number of Republicans in then Gov. Taft’s administration. (Taft was a Republican). Naturally, the scandal was blamed on the fact that the people involved in it Republicans and the Republicans as a party were corrupt. Republicans who were not even involved in the scandal lost their races in 2006 and did not fare any better in 2008.

It’s interesting that few people now are blaming the scandal in Cuyahoga County on the fact that the Democrats have been running the county for decades and that all of this power has corrupted them. They have built a political machine that passes out favors and jobs, that fixes elections, and that enriches itself at the public’s expense. That is business as usual for the Democrats in Cuyahoga County. I had hoped that voters might wise up and vote the Democrats out of office but I don’t think that they have since the county government reform bill which the voters passed was actually drafted by Democrats who hold offices in county government.

LOL! In a county where 40% are minorities and 60% receive some form of "social services?" Not likely...ever.
