Did my ears deceive me? Did I hear House Minority Leader John Boehner say on CBS' "Face the Nation" Sunday, "If the only option I have is to vote for those at 250 and below, of course I'm going to do that"? He was referring to voting for extending the Bush tax cuts to those making less than $250,000 a year. And he was referring to the issue when there is a building momentum to keep the tax cuts for everyone in an era of fragile economic growth and 9.6 percent unemployment. Even some Democrats are willing to keep the tax cuts, but Boehner just made it difficult for them.
There is a growing awareness that we are not getting out of this slowdown anytime soon. Independents and the tea party movement are siding with conservatives in favor of extending the tax cuts. There is a sense that economic growth is part of the answer to our economic problems. And there is a realization spreading across the country that official Washington is clueless.
President Barack Obama -- in his first 19 months in office -- increased the national debt by more than all presidential administrations from George Washington to Ronald Reagan combined. Obama's extravagance follows the huge amount of red ink splashed around by the Republicans when they were in office. It led to the Republicans relinquishing the presidency in 2008. Now Boehner just indicated that if his party gets back in power, the spending might very well continue. The very rich will have paid more in taxes, and -- that not being enough to pay for Washington's extravagance -- there will be a value-added tax for all of us. Yes, there will be a VAT. There just is not that much to be taken from the rich.
I think that Mr. Boehner is mostly on the right track. But at this point, he should have never spoken this sentence:
“If the only option I have is to vote for some of those tax reductions, Ill vote for them.”
It vitiates the rest of his message, which is that no personal income tax rate should be allowed to increase on January 1, 2011.
If the Democrats were united, monolithic, holding firm, and thus actually creating political heat on the Republicans for “blocking middle class tax cuts,” the one sentence might be justified as showing that the Republicans AREN’T standing in the way of keeping tax rates from climbing for the middle class.
But heck, over 30 House Democrats are on board for keeping ALL the rates at their current levels for the next two years. Thus, the tactic should be to drive that wedge in deeper. Answer back to the whore Schieffer, “Well, Bob, I’m on the side of the only bi-partisan game in town, one signed on to by several dozen Democrat House members already - no tax increases for ANYONE. Are you against bi-partisanship?”
With that kind of growing Dem rebellion against increasing taxes on better-off folks, why negotiate with yourself?
My guess is they will give up on Boehner pretty quickly and move on to Jim DeMint or the Tea Party movement itself. Note the left always refers to the Tea Party as if it were a national political organization. They would never admit that is a massive, bottom to top, grass roots movement that has captured the imagination and enthusiasm of millions of everyday people.
Yes, I think you are right.
When the left talks about the Tea Party, it is clear they think we(I am a tea partier) have a national structure. The grass roots movement concept is clearly beyond their grasp.
And by voting “yes” on this bill, you give the Dems a green light to say that even the Republicans favor tax increases. Boehner should have stuck to Conservative principles here.
But this move gives the Dems a chance to tell the world that even the Republicans support taxing the “evil rich.” Boehner should have stuck to Conservative principles. This is going to backfire on the GOP.
That graph shows that there were deficits while the government was under GOP control. Many of us were very angry about it at the time.
You should reference the origin of your graph...excellent illustration, but where did it come from?
RINO-itis is an infectious disease. I wouldn’t write Boehner off...yet.
Alas! it is too late to dump him. Tar and feathers is all that is left. And this guy is apt to be the next Speaker. I hope all these freshman Republican senators will refuse to vote for him for Speaker.
Send these guys to a beach in the Bahamas and don’t let them come back.
Does any one watch this show?
Leftists of all stripe are wedded to static economics.
1.)People will not change their habits no matter how much or little you tax them(the people who believe this also push “targeted” tax measures in order to change behaviour)and
2.) wealth cannot be increased. A static amount of wealth can only be “distributed.” That leads to perpetual induced “low” inflation because they believe this is the only form of growth possible and is actually stealing resources from others less fortunate which gives them a guilt complex which they insist must be pasted on to the producers in society and which requires “redistribution.”
The Laffer Curve was actually discovered and unleashed on the world by Captain Obvious.
“If the only option I have is to vote for those at 250 and below, of course I’m going to do that”?
Now if he said no I wouldn’t vote for it how many independent votes would go to the democrat side??.
He pulled a terrible Boehner. Hopefully he will repent of this..
