Is tea party the end of our two-party system? ( Doom & Gloom --or -- Ray of Hope?) MktWatch.

Commentary: Ultrapolarization is creating yawning gap in the center

WASHINGTON (MarketWatch) — Tuesday’s stunning primary results made it official: The tea-party movement has captured the Republican Party.

The so-called establishment in the GOP is now at the mercy of former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, Sen. Jim DeMint of South Carolina and other self-appointed prophets of the conservative movement that have succeeded in channeling the recession-fueled anger of a good chunk of the voting public.

The unlikely victory of Christine O’Donnell against Republican stalwart Mike Castle in the Delaware Senate primary showed that Sharron Angle’s primary victory in Nevada and Joe Miller’s in Alaska were not aberrations, but harbingers of a new conservative order.

Tea Party claims big primary wins

Long-shot candidates Christine O'Donnell of Delaware and Carl Paladino of New York upset established rivals in Republican primaries. Peter Wallsten discusses the implications for November.

While the conventional wisdom is that O’Donnell’s win secures the Delaware Senate seat for Democrats in November, she has demonstrated that the tea-party movement can upend conventional wisdom, which until very recently saw Castle as a shoo-in.

The tea party’s successful conquest of the GOP means that the Republican label has shifted even further right, and raises the question of what happens to moderate Republicans and independents in the November election.

The Democrats, for their part, always have been more fractious than the Republicans. The party is riven by the tension between progressives and “moderates” such as the Blue Dogs, who carry the same party label but share fewer and fewer policies.

In short, the ultrapolarization that characterizes the political debate in this election year is opening a yawning gap in the center.

The Communist Party captured the Democrat Party a while back and all we have had is Republican Collaborators. Now the Tea Party is capturing the Republican Party. Now the people will finally have a choice between voting for a Democrat or an American.

If the Tea Party movement captures the Republican Party, it would be the BEGINNING of a two party system in the U. S. Until now, it has been a one party system: Democrats and Democrats Lite.

The media keeps trying to beat the drum claiming the Tea party is some radically right wing group...it spans more than they think (or are willing to admit). And what they fail to comment on is just how radically far to the left the democrat party has moved. And by the dems moving far to the left the GOP shifted to the vacated middle ground but didn't pick up the benefit of voters in that area because they failed to point out the extreme party the democrats became.

There is a gap between the reality of where the parties are policy wise and where the sleeping America assumes they are.

Tea Party v. Communists? I’ll fight that two party battle and expect to beat Obama and Pelosi.

Maybe it will be a true return to a real two party system instead whack liberal rats and our non beloved Rino’s pretending to be conservative.

Drive out the Rino’s and replace them with real Americans not the Rinos needing pats on their backs and butts from the rats and their mediots.

The polls clearly demonstrated the high probability of O’Donnell winning the primary. Her hapless opponent, Castle, never made it past 50% popularity ~ and for an incumbent that’s a kiss of death.

Enough with the "Tea Party" already. I've been to demonstrations and meetings that had Tea Party labels but I don't think anyone thought they were starting an emerging political party. We're just people who are fed up with Government Uber Alles. Most of us are Republicans, but I've met a few Democrats at these things who understand too. We don't want to start new parties. We want the existing parties to mend their ways.

Sarah Palin is a Republican. She doesn't belong to a Tea Party. There is no Tea Party. The people who won yesterday that everyone is making a big deal about are Republicans. Let those who oppose them start their own Party.

Let's see, 40-years ago, Dick Nixon was the end of the Republican Party. 20-years ago, Bill Clinton was the end of the Republican Party. 20-months ago, Barack Obama was the end of the Republican party. Today, the Tea Party is the end of the Republican Party. It seems like people have been writing the obituary of the Republican Party for decades, but the Party is still around. Imagine that?

Also, "movements" generally are always perceived to be more powerful than they actually are. 19 months ago, the Obama movement seemed like a juggernaut, completely unbeatable and securing for the dems a permanent governing majority for the foreseeable future. It hardly looks like that today.

There were never any real "moderate Republicans", nor do Independents have a political party ~ that's why they end up having to vote for somebody that somebody else picked for them to vote for.

It's hell to be an independent~

I certainly hope it’s not. We just need to clean it out like they do on “Horders”. The infrastructure is already in place in the Republican party. It’s just inhabited by about 75% vermin. It would be a lot easier to clean it up than to start over, and to compete with the GOP. A third party would be bad. Not opposed to it, but only as a last resort.

How can this be the end of the two party system? Everyone of the tea party backed candidates won the Republican primary and will have the R next to their name on the ballot. It is only the washed out RINOs who either become democrats or run as in independent. What we have here is a revolution within the Republican party. And come November it will show up big time as a revolution at the general election ballot box.

The Dems should be thankful that they are just going to lose their jobs. In a lot of revolutions people lose their heads.

"Is tea party the end of our two-party system? "

No, it is the Tea Party taking our GOP back, very simple.

Is tea party the end of our two-party system?

No, but it's looking more like the end of our two-headed, one party system.

“Long-shot candidates Christine O’Donnell of Delaware and Carl Paladino of New York upset established rivals in Republican primaries”

Hmmmm, one defeated a liberal RINO and the other defeated a weaker candidate. Meanwhile ‘mainstream’ conservatives like Kelly Ayotte won their races. The narrative wuold be more convincing if McCain lost his primary.

People are animated by a Government out of control and want to get it back. Candidates attuned to that win.
