As Governor Chris Christie goes to war with the NJ teachers union, let's review what he's up against.

NJEA director Vince Giordano received $421,615 in salary and $128,508 in deferred compensation last year, according to tax filings released last spring.

NJEA president Barbara Keshishian earned $256,450 last year. VP Wendell Steinhauer and Secretary-Treasurer Marie Blistan were paid $170,974 each.

Meanwhile, the governor earned a measly $175,000.

Christie's war with the union escalated earlier this summer when a union official suggested praying for the governor's death.

Surely this has come up before now. How does the union justify this guy’s salary?

If it were radily available before now, the only reason would have been for it to the final nail.

I eagerly anticipate Christie’s next town hall where some brave (idiot) teacher stands up to confront him again. When he drops that nail, it is going to go over like a fart in a diving bell.

President Kennedy’s Executive Order 10998, allowing Federal unions, is what opened the door for public sector unions at the state and local level, which is leading to bankruptcy from bloated public sector salaries, benefits, and retirement plans. Businesses that offered plans like many governments have would go bankrupt. Gov’t entities will, too, eventually, but it will be much more painful.

This is why unions should again be outlawed for public employees.

The practice of keeping bad teachers "dancing lemons," revealing the sad practice of shuffling bad teachers around the system instead of firing merely because they may have tenure on the job. While new teachers are automatically laid off due to budget cuts, teachers that have a disciplinary problem or a troubled history are kept because they've been on the job longer. This is wrong and reflects badly on the union and teachers alike, not to mention that it leads to a bad education for our kids.

What is the purpose of teacher unions? To work for children? Establish new and better requirements? Push their members to better serve parents and children?

"Despite what some among us would like to believe, it is not because of our creative ideas. It is not because of the merit of our positions. It is not because we care about children. And it is not because we have a vision of a great public school for every child. NEA and its affiliates are effective advocates because we have power. And we have power because there are more than 3.2 million people who are willing to pay us hundreds of millions of dollars in dues each year because they believe that we are the unions that can most effectively represent them, the unions that can protect their rights and advance their interests as education employees" ...National Education Association's just-retired General Counsel Bob Chanin. (The NEA is the Monroe County Association's parent body).

NEA General Counsel Bob Chanin Says Farewell:

As legendary New York teachers union leader Albert Shanker said, "When school children start paying union dues, that's when I'll start representing the interests of school children."

All government unions should be banned. The idea that government workers need protection from guess who?? THE AMERICAN PEOPLE, is ridiculous. remember, teachers are government employees. Ban government unions.

Why is there a ‘teachers’ union’ anyway?

Why is there compulsory public education anyway?

‘We don’t need no education. We dont need no thought control. No dark sarcasm in the classroom. Teachers leave them kids alone.’

RE: Why is there a ‘teachers’ union’ anyway?

Here are some Q&A from a Union’s website that answers your question ( remember, they said it, not me, I’m just showing it to you )....

Why do I need a union?

Simply talking about issues that affect public service employees isn’t enough. To make a difference, our voices must be heard. And we can be heard only when we organize as a union and gain the strength to make real change.

Together, our collective voice is heard — on the job and in state legislatures and city halls.

Do union workers get higher wages?

Yes.1 Workers who are union members earn 30 percent more than non-union workers. Union wages are even greater for women and people of color. Women and African Americans represented by unions earn over 33 percent more than their non-union counterparts. And Latino workers with the union advantage make over 46 percent more than those not represented by a union.

Do union workers get better benefits?

Yes. Union workers are more likely than their non-union counterparts to receive health care and pension benefits. More than eight out of ten union members are covered by health insurance and have a pension plan — versus fewer than half of those not in a union.

Why do I need a union now?

Big corporations and anti-worker politicians are attacking public employees and the services we provide. Their goal is simple: privatize our jobs, strip us of our rights and dismantle the public sector. They’re going after our wages, our pensions and our health care. This can happen anywhere.

Let me do a little editing on one of your sentences:

As legendary New York teachers union leader, the aptly named Albert Shanker said, "When school children start paying union dues, that's when I'll start representing the interests of school children."
