A prominent Republican congressman raised the specter Friday of a government shutdown if the GOP wins control of the House.
Speaking to hundreds of activists gathered at the Mayflower Hotel in Washington for the Faith and Freedom Conference, Rep. Lynn Westmoreland (R-Ga.) urged the audience to stand with House Republicans when they go toe-to-toe with President Barack Obama.
Westmoreland said his caucus presuming it takes control of the House come November aims to pass spending bills that Obama is likely to veto. He predicted Republicans would not be able to override such a veto, creating a standoff that could cause Congress to grind to a halt.
If the government shuts down, we want you with us, he said.
The congressman recalled a similar shutdown that took place in 1995, when Newt Gingrich also a speaker at the conference was serving as House speaker. A future standstill could temporarily close national parks or delay payments from the government, Westmoreland speculated.
We have put Band-Aids on some things that need to be cleaned out, he said. "That is going to take some pain. Theres going to have to be some pain for us to do some things that weve got to do to right the ship."
As a vice chairman of the National Republican Congressional Committee, Westmoreland has helped with candidate recruitment for congressional races. He said the group has tried to enlist candidates who are more interested in tackling the countrys problems than getting reelected in 2012.

And the media will run endless articles touting the misery caused those poor Government SEIU workers because of it, just as they did under Gingrich.
Without a MEDIA CAMPAIGN to go with it, it will be a disaster, just like it was under Clinton.
Best news I’ve heard all day...in fact, we should insist that the government shut down in the event of a GOP victory so the Dems don’t pass all sorts of Socialist bills before they leave office.
Politico starting the scare tactics. This is the latest Dem talking point, i.e., elect Reps and they will shut down the government. That tactic may backfire given the mood of the people.
He’s my Congressman. I want to hear more, of course. But on the face of it, I like it.
Politico seems to ignore the fact that many in America would consider that a great start
another pre-emptive strike by the media. They’ll push this for the rest of the week, poll it and then use it in the generals.
You are absolutely correct. The difference then is that the Internet was in its infancy and FoxNews was barely getting started.
I believe the most ironic problem of shutting it down last time (under clinton) was that the gov employees took the feds to court to get backpay and they did!
So basically, we just wound up paying for a vacation.
For serious consideration:
The motto, rally call, or battle cry should focus on Pay Down the Debt of course at all levels of government.
The optics of spending cuts means people lose their jobs and government services are reduced. Similar optics with tax cuts.
However, paying down the debt has positive optics. Sure there are going to be dislocations, but the upside is ... we are paying down the debt!
In other words, it gives the weak-kneed politicians their beloved political cover.
Just trying to figure out how to get the right thing done. Any thoughts?
Politics = Poli (meaning many) and Tics (meaning blood-sucking insects)
Shut DC down and call it a Green Initiative. Going green to saving green.
What’s not to love?
For a minute, I thought it read “genitals”....LOL
The answer is to pass a SMALLER spending bill every time he vetoes one, and then say “What? You didn’t like that bill? OK, we’ll spend even less then.”
If the Republicans take back the house and make huge gains in the Senate, the tea partiers work has not ended. Rather it has just begun. We will have to work extra hard to support our candidates in efforts such as this. It’s going to be tough.
It has a positive tone, as well, once you think of it.
As most American families have had to cut back during this recession, they’ve limited their disposable income. At the same time, they’ve paid down personal debt as their circumstances will allow. As difficult as this is for us as citizens, we are doing it. And if we can do this, so can Congress.
We need to return the unspent stimulus funds and apply that to debt repayment.
“...Westmoreland said his caucus presuming it takes control of the House come November aims to pass spending bills that Obama is likely to veto. He predicted Republicans would not be able to override such a veto, creating a standoff that could cause Congress to grind to a halt.
If the government shuts down, we want you with us, he said.”
We’re there with you all the way.
We’ll also tell Obama to stop being such an ‘obstructionist’ in preventing economic recovery...
Fund the military, the border and immigration services, and the State Department enough to keep embassies open. Shut the rest of that worthless draining inept crap in DC down for good.
How many of us have heard through friends and neighbors that this job or that company has had to furlough workers as their sales have plummeted in the Obamaeconomy? Federal government employees facing a furlough should be no more of a sacrifice than when private companies have their employees do the same.
We need to stop pushing the concept of “Government Shutdown” and push the concept of “Legislative Shutdown”....time to take over the message AND the verbage...
