Culture Vulture: Hate and anger spread fast on Web
Salt Lake Tribune ^ | 9-14-2010 | Sean P. Means

It wasn’t supposed to be a big deal of a story. Instead it was an object lesson in the power of the Internet, and the speed at which hate and misconceptions can travel.

My editor wondered why there were no Spanish-language movie theaters catering to the Salt Lake Valley’s ever-growing Latino community. She assigned me to ask around.

I talked to someone from the Utah Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, who didn’t know why anyone hadn’t opened a Spanish-language moviehouse — but thought it would be a neat idea. I talked to an exhibitor who gave me some insight on the ups and downs of the movie-theater business in this region. I talked to a professor who is screening Spanish-language movies at a program at Weber State University, who talked about the community boost a (hypothetical) theater might give to Utah’s Latinos.

“How bout they learn English, and become part of this country! I’d be glad to share our theaters with them.”

Exactly.

How about opening an Assimilation Center? Teach English and American History.

The free market is supposed to determine what kinds of businesses open up and stay open.
Activists journalists, on the other hand, try to persuade people that the lack of a particular business is somehow an error that should perhaps be corrected.

And if anyone pushes back against the persuasion used by the Activist Journalist, then the journalist takes offense and starts talking about "hate".

Somehow or other, THEY always seem to be "right": they always seem to be "the good guys". The rest of us schmucks are just uneducated haters who need to smarten up.

For Utah’s largest minority community, though, a theater where they could get a taste of their home culture — yes, in the language they learned before coming to America — would be a unifying force for good.

And if there were a market for it, where an entrepreneur could open a Spanish language theater and make it a sustainable business, it would already exist ... without subsidies, tax-breaks, or special government considerations.

Which means the very idea of a newspaper editor asking the question indicates they have no concept of how business works, and was motivated by some touchy-feely politically correct identity class nonsense into asking the question in the first place. Hence the response in the comments to the article.

And why aren’t there any homosexual themed theaters showing “Brokeback Mountain” on a continuous loop? Mixed in with reruns of Rosie O’Donnell’s talk show?

Why aren’t there any black oriented theaters showing “Superfly” over and over?

Why aren’t there Asian themed theaters showing kung fu movies?

This could go on endlessly.

The entire premise of the report is faulty. To say “why isn’t there a _________” is itself a bigoted thought. To assume that Latino people need a Spanish language movie theater is very bigoted. It assumes that they can only communicate in Spanish and that they would want to watch only the movies made in Spanish.

It is bigoted to assume that Latinos want a Spanish language theater. Only a liberal would come up with such reasoning.

?? “ a theater where they could get a taste of their home culture — yes, in the language they learned before coming to America — would be a unifying force for good.”

UH? What good unifying force would be a venue that inhibits anyone from learning to speak the language of the country to which you ca,e. legally or illegally?

Saying such BS does not make it so

“a theater where they could get a taste of their home culture...would be a unifying force for good.”

Unifying for whom, and for whose good?

Utah Hispanic Chamber of Commerce??????????????/

So much for assimilation! A racist organization by definition as shown in their name “ Utah Hispanic Chamber of Commerce”

More divisiveness from the PC progressives.

Come here legally, learn the language, don’t expect us to pay your way, never define yourself as a hyphenated American and then I say “welcome to the greatest club on earth”.

Not only do they not understand the basic concepts of capitalism...they don’t even have a handle on simple logic. How anyone can term an idea that is designed to appeal to an admitted minority a “unifying for for good” is beyond me.

“Prejudice comes from external sources. Sometimes it’s your family. Sometimes it’s the people you hang out with. Sometimes it’s from radio and TV commentators who serve their own purposes (and those of their corporate bosses) by making their listeners fearful of some vague “other” — gays one week...”

This is one of those idioms passed around by the liberal community. Your mom teaches you racism. Your family, your friends, Rush, etc.

I was never racist, and actually a real lib when I graduated from HS. My first week of college there was one class I had to take as a remedial class. The class was full of what I guess I should call “ethnic” types. They literally stole anything not nailed down. These kids seemed to think I was crazy.

They used screwdrivers on their knives to remove mikesto sell. I’d never seen anyone do that in my high school (which I freely admit was white). The most we ever did was write on the desk.

It upended all my ideas of what was right and wrong. I didn’t want to be racist, yet my very first real experience with such people confirmed every racist thing people I had pushed off as “prejudiced” had told me. The kids that were stealing weren’t poor.

I think that was the point I started to decide I was going to make up my own mind about things based on what I saw, and I saw people were very anxious to “mold me”.

No, it’s not your “parents” or Rush that teach you racism. It’s stereotypical experiences. It was those blacks that taught me racism. And I’ve come to resent being told by people I shouldn’t believe what I see because I’m morally ignorant.

Sorry for the opus but comments like that anger me.

So is the Salt Lake Tribune publishing a Spanish language, daily newspaper? If not...WHY NOT!!! After all, we KNOW there is no hypocrisy on the left!

I don't believe this for one second. This is the media stirring hate and writing about it, and then complaining. They like to pick scabs and if there isn't already one they are perfectly happy to inflict a wound so they can pick at it.

The Trib leans just a little to the Left.

The tone of the article was condensending to say the least.

Salt Lake County is now 25% "minority mostly Mexican IIRC.

"The biggest shift is clearly with Utah’s Latino populace, which has experienced a 68 percent boom in the past nine years.

Compare that with just 20 percent growth from Utah’s non-Latino population.

This strong and steady shift has census officials estimating that Latinos make up 12 percent of Utah’s population, up from 9 percent in 2000.

Oddly, the Census Bureau still pegs Utah’s white population at 93 percent, though that includes ethnic Latinos who are classified as white racially.)"

So, ya, bound to be some souls not happy about the massive increase of problem in the schools, crime, et al.... You might even say some see the "boom" as an invasion.

The “Law”, or the universal sense of right and wrong,
is visceral, it is written on our hearts.

When we see something that jars that sense of right and wrong, we have a reaction - “that’s wrong”.

Libs have trained themselves and their children to reverse this innate sense. They are also trying to force the idea on the rest of society that these innate responses to “wrong” are “prejudice” or “racism” or “[X]ophobia”.

The notion that Utah’s Latinos are just like them — citizens and legal residents of the United States, hardworking people, working their jobs and raising their families — is apparently too much for them to grasp.

Yeah, some of them are, and they speak English perfectly well.

It may be too much for Mr. Means to grasp, but a Spanish language theater would cater almost exclusively to illegal aliens who DON'T speak English.

How about they go back to where they came from, learn English, then come back (legally!) to watch a movie.

A little over ten years ago I was a web developer for a very large film manufacturing company.
One of our idiot marketing Mgrs decided he wanted the US site converted into Spanish. They were an "untapped resource."
We knew it was a waste of time, but many hours and many-many dollars later, we reported to him that the site got less than one tenth of one percent of the US hits.

Common sense and upholding the law does not equal hate.

Anger may be a valid observation. Americans are getting tired of being ripped off by foreign invaders.
