How does a city lose 2,500 feet of tunnels under its streets?
North Miami Beach would like to know.
Over a four-year period, the city contracted with a construction company to build 254 manholes -- the tunnels that run down from street level to utility pipes 8 to 10 feet below.

Maybe I should build something down there. About a mile from my home there is a large drainage tile and basin. As very dumb kids we'd play in these tunnels. One summer we built a fort on top of the biggest cistern, then it rained one day while we were away and we came back to find a small lake and all our stuff we'd left in it, under 3 feet of water!
So, I'd pass on the building something part of the plan. LOL

I had a summer job in college inspecting manholes and sewer systems for a city. Even in a medium-size midwest town 100+ years of people building stuff underground and keeping shoddy records results in a lot of surprises.

Dude! You have the makings of a perfect zombie survival plan! Or a Geraldo special.
Nah, I like your idea better.

makes a person wonder about NYC. There’s gotta be nearly as much city under the ground as above ground. Probably half of it lost and forgotten. I wonder how many times they run a pipe THROUGH a pipe and wonder what the heck that pipe was they just ran their pipe through...lol

Governmet worker: "What is an as ine?" *cuts through it, giant explosion* "oh gas line!"
Sounds stupid but think how many times underground lines are chopped through.

It sounds interesting anyway. Make sure there are no other access points, or seal them off yourself, reinforce any weak points and build your own bat cave. Who knows you might even find utilities you can tap into. lol

Hmmm... Brick and mortar tunnel, big enough for a small truck, runs from the river into town, but the city has no records? If you find any 80 year old scotch down there, I’ll take it off your hands.

For a while I worked for a company that made systems for remote sewer inspection and repair. “No dig” technology, they call it.
One major function of the systems was to document the exact location and dimensions of each line inspected, and to integrate that into a municipal utility database.
