Meet Paul Ryan and Chris Christie, the GOPs dynamic and dangerous duo. One is the author of A Roadmap for Americas Future, a bold blueprint that shows policymakers how they can shrink entitlement spending while also growing the economy. The other is the Garden States chief executive and YouTube sensation whos implementing his own roadmap in a blue state drowning in red ink.
Both are fighting back hard against the idea that government spending cant be cut and thus taxes must be raised in order restore Americas long-term fiscal solvency.
Now this is the worst sort of heresy to the liberal economic intelligentsia and mainstream media who all pretty much belong to the cult of Adolph Wagner, a German economist who died in 1917. Wagners Law basically says that as a nation gets wealthier, its citizens demand more social services and bigger government. As a result, its far easier for government to raise taxes than cut spending. Not surprisingly, Wagnerians are enthusiastic supporters of layering a value-added tax onto the current U.S. income tax system.
Peter Orszag, the just-departed White House budget chief, is an obvious Wagnerian. He told CNN over the weekend that America cannot afford the Bush tax cuts of 2001 and 2003. None of them. Not the ones for the rich (and entrepreneurs and investors). Not the ones for the middle class. They all have to go, every last smidge of them. We, unfortunately, cant afford the tax cuts over the medium and long term, Orszag said on CNNs Fareed Zakaria GPS program. We face too large a deficit out in 2015, 2018, 2020.

My dream team
Christie & Ryan 2012...the dynamic duo for real change!
One is a serious fiscal conservative, the other is a flaky wannabe.
They are not in the same league.
Wouldn’t that be a hoot? Dem heads exploding at the thought.
Can we make this happen? The Palinbots won’t go along with this I hope you know that.
Ditto!!!!
Thats for sure.Palin fanatics may do harm in the long run, they see only her as a choice
I’ve missed his waffling
I’ve only seen his kick ass in NJ.
IF ONLY
Of all Republicans, Paul Ryan has shown himself to be the MOST SERIOUS and MOST THOUGHTFUL when it comes to offering a viable solution to the fiscal and debt problem of this country.
That the GOP has not United behind his ROADMAP is an INDICTMENT on the GOP Party.
Chris Christie on the other hand is only good for NJ and NOT National Office. While his strong and courageous stance on NJ’s budget and his willingness to confront the unions deserve praise, his other policies (e.g. gun control, immigration ) are not going to resonate nationally.
Christie is like that other strong local politician — Rudy Giuliani. Keep them where they are.
The motto, rally call, or battle cry should focus on “Pay Down the Debt” of course at all levels of government.
The optics of “spending cuts” means people lose their jobs and government services are reduced. Similar optics with “tax cuts.”
However, “paying down the debt” has positive optics. Sure there are going to be dislocations, but the upside is ... we are paying down the debt.
In other words, it gives the weak-kneed politicians their beloved political cover.
Just trying to figure out how to get the right thing done. Any thoughts?
Politics = Poli (meaning many) and Tics (meaning blood-sucking insects)
Love Paul Ryan, think the GOP establishment elite don’t care for him and will try to keep him down.
IMO, Ryan would make a far better Speaker than Boner. But he's probably too young to garner enough support. Too bad.
“The Palinbots wont go along with this I hope you know that.”
Heck, make Palin SecState. I could see her walk into a meeting with the Palis and tell them where to stick it.
So, Orszag is so thrilled by the success of the socialist welfare state model in old Europe that he wants to help Ubama and his playpen full of communists keep pushing America in the same direction? Do I have that right?
Wow.. Whatever that steaming pantload Orszag is smoking, stay away from it.
Don’t know about Ryan. But I would like to see Christie stronger on the 2nd Amendment & tougher on illegal immigrants. He says he’s pro life but there was some question about exactly how close to his election his epiphany was. He’s bold & forward & not too bad fiscally. But it is *way* too early to consider him for anything further than where he is right now.
I think a problem Republicans have sometimes is that many of them get excited for someone and give their support way too early, only to get disappointed. I saw Christie 2014 signs 2 months after he was sworn in.
sorry that should be 2012.
