Republican Leaders Ditching Maes, Supporting Tancredo
Greeley Gazette ^ | 9/13/10 | Jack Minor

In a further sign of division in the Colorado governor's race, several prominent Republicans have formally endorsed a third-party candidate over their party's own nominee.

Wednesday, the Tancredo campaign released a list of over 20 endorsements by prominent Republicans in Colorado and around the country including former Congressman Bob Beauprez. Other endorsements came from Rep. Steve King of Iowa, Colorado State Senators Ted Harvey, Greg Brophy and Josh Penry, who recently served as the campaign manager for Jane Norton’s failed senatorial bid.

Tancredo has also picked up the endorsements of State Representatives Spencer Swalm, Steve King, Marsha Looper and Cheri Gerou.

In announcing the endorsements, Tancredo said, “I am honored and humbled by the outpouring of support of these outstanding Republican leaders.” Tancredo’s campaign manager, Bay Buchanan, said, “There has been a wave of Republican endorsements and Tea Party grass roots support toward Tom Tancredo in the last week. Colorado’s race for Governor is now a two-man race and Tom has the momentum to beat the Democrat.”

The endorsements are the latest signs of Republican discontent over their nominee Dan Maes. Following Maes’ choice of Tambor Williams as his Lt. Governor, Colorado Right to Life took the unusual step of publicly apologizing to its members for their previous support of Maes, saying, “With Maes we lowered our guard, hoping that a grassroots, tea-party-endorsed, self-proclaimed pro-personhood Republican candidate could be trusted. We see now that we were gullible. We apologize.”

NO CHANCE! The Colorado republicans really blew this one. They had a sure Governor pickup and teh they formed a firing squad in a circle. The Dem. guy couldn’t have asked for a greater gift. It never ceases to amze me how Republicans can snatch defeat from the jaws of victory. Let’s hope this is an isolated event.

A man who showed up at Tea Party rallies, said the right things, lied about his background and is now taking away any chance of giving the governorship back to a conservative. He's arguing that he is fighting "The Machine" because principled conservatives will not back him and the party wanted him to pull out of the race after his lies were exposed.

This was a sure pickup and now the dem is ahead by 25 points in a 3-way race. Tancredo won't win. Not under these circumstances.

Boy you got that right - the GOP reminds me of the Eagles.
But could Tancredo still win, even coming from behind?

If he doesn't pull it off, he's simply handed the governorship to the democRATs.

Tancredo is too divisive. By the way, I hope the Maes thing doesn’t repeat itself in Delaware with O’Donnell

Have Buck and Norton endorsed Maes?

The only damning thing the Denver comPost can find to write about Hickenlooper is that he accidentally left the toilet seat up once in college. The Post continues to vilify Tancredo on a daily basis.

Don’t know, but with the Dems. coasting to victory in the Gov, race, it could hurt Buck down the ballot as the Gov. race always influences the other races. When you ask voters to split party’s between the two top tier races you are bucking past trends. Republicans in Colorado need to takje their party leaders out and shoot them.

No. This is a sure hold for the Dems. And Hick isn't dumb like Ritter, so he'll probably be in office eight years.

Buck recently withdrew his support of Maes. And his (Buck's) poll number have been slipping. When you have a mess at the top of the ticket it does hurt down ballot. Other problem is that if the Republican gubernatorial candidate draws less than a certain percentage in the general election (I want to say it's 15%, but can't remember for sure - but a good possibility with Maes), the party no longer qualifies as a “Major Party” under state law and has to follow a whole bunch of really strange rules to get any candidates on the ballot. This is a huge mess on many levels.

I take it back the threshold is 10%. Then the Dems would have the upper line of the ballots to themselves and the republicans would be grouped with the minor parties.

When he came out for drug legalization, he lost any hope of being elected to anything.

In the "Politics 101 Dictionary", under "How to Screw Up a Campaign" - you should now be able to find pictures of:

McInnis (but only an appropo photocopy of a picture)

Maes (but he'll have to explain away a smudge on the photo)

Tancredo (but his picture is the negative only)

Wadhams (with a "What? Me Worry?" caption)

Hickenlooper (a picture of a very nice and thoughtful "Thank You" Card)

Colorado conservatives and Republicans alike should be ASHAMED at this particular race above all else.

As the rest of the United States enjoys watching the Second American Revolution this November, Colorado will be the one, glaring exception, that the Dems will somehow tout as a "success" on THEIR side...

No way will Tank pull this off. Too many people are pissed. I live in his district, I go to his church and his “base” are not happy with his actions.

First, he did NOT run in the GOP primary like he should have. He has not earned a spot on the ballot. He bought his way onto the ballot by changing his party affiliation and kicking their nominee to the curb.

He is a one issue candidate, immigration. While that is important, it is the economy stupid.

On the economy, he is a big spender. He has a record of requesting and getting earmarks almost $18 million in 2008 alone.

He voted yes for TARP twice, he voted present on the auto-bailout after he promised us he would vote no.

He was the only CO Rep. to vote yes on the Consumer Energy Supply Act of 2008. This act was named the worse energy bill of our time by the Heritage Foundation. It would skyrocket the cost of energy and put many producers out of business.

He broke his promise on term limits, he has voiced support of making the Patriot Act permanent and support for a National ID card.

He did not run for re-election in 2008 because he tried to run for President and that was a disaster.

He is very divisive and a loose cannon with his temper and gaffes.

He is EXACTLY THE OPPOSITE OF COLORADANS. He is a fiscal liberal but a social conservative. Most Coloradans are fiscal conservatives and social libertarians.

Dan Maes isn’t perfect and wasn’t my choice but he is far less flawed than candidates that the Dems will rally around.

As for Hickenlooper, his the founder of the Chinook Fund. Google it, it is nothing to be taken lightly. His job creation for Denver is down 38% and he has no solution. His tax structure is running Denver businesses out of town. He has turned Denver into a Sanctuary city (regardless of what the post says) and he has run up a budget short-fall for the city.

Hickenlooper would be far worse than Maes for our state.
