Malden mom is glad son had gun(MA)

The mother of a Malden man who survived being struck with four bullets in a gunfight that left the other two men dead said yesterday that she is grateful her son was armed with his licensed handgun at the time.

“He had it on him. Why, I don’t know. His friends said he’s never had it on him. But I am very thankful he did. Otherwise it would have been him killed,” said Kathleen Becerra, 47.

Jerry Bourque, 25, was on his porch at about 12:55 a.m. Tuesday with a friend when they were approached by two Boston men, Lakeem Tombs and Virgilio Dipre, both 18, authorities said.

“They said, ‘Do you know a girl named Veronica?’ My son said, ‘That doesn’t ring a bell.’ They walked away and then came back later and asked, ‘Is this Salem Street?’ When my son said, ‘Yes,’ they said, ‘Empty your pockets.’ One guy started pistol-whipping my son. Then the other kid starting shooting,” Bacerra said, citing her son and his friend’s account.

The friend told the Herald Tuesday that Bourque struggled to pull his gun from his waistband but ended up firing through his clothes.

Police initially called it an apparent robbery. A spokeswoman for the Middlesex District Attorney’s office said the circumstances remain under investigation. Police found all three men lying outside the house; Tombs and Dipre died later. Bourque is hospitalized with wounds to his groin, wrist and chest.

Most CCW holders use holsters. It is good to practice drawing, better to have your weapon in your hand in questionable circumstances. I wonder what type of handgun he had. Some revolvers have hammer shrouds that allow them to be reliably fired while inside a pocket or shirt.

I think there’s more to this “story”.

What more to the story? The “victim” was licensed, which doesn’t happen all that often in MA, and the deaders were probably gangsta thugs.

“What more to the story?”
Motive is one question.
Robbery as a motive just doesn’t sound plausible.

I hate it when I see “licensed firearm” in the news. They are conditioning people to think that is normal.

My guess is all four were “gangsta thugs” - I don’t buy that the ‘victim” “just happened” to have a gun stuffed in his pants when this “random” crime occured - that’s all.

Never good when the “victim” needs a lawyer:

“I don’t buy that the ‘victim” “just happened” to have a gun stuffed in his pants when this “random” crime occured’

This occured in Mass, the state where very very few people are licensed to carry concealed.

You’ll see the same language use in almost every story where a firearm was used for self defense.

Either licensed firearm or licensed gunowner.

Perhaps they just mean the firearm was legally possessed. I don’t believe that for a minute. They haven’t been able to get guns banned so they are trying for something else.

Let me see, the guy was on his property, approached by two (other?) thugs, gets in a row and manages to put two in the morgue...sounds good to me... Who cares if he had a permit or not, he was on HIS property.

I understand that, I doubt the victim was licensed to carry a concealed weapon.

I don’t care if he was on his property. Law abiding citizens should have not have their Constitutionally protected rights infringed.

“Who cares if he had a permit or not, he was on HIS property.”

I agree with you 100% about not needing a gun permit on your own property - that said this looks like a drug deal gone bad (drugs removed from home) and 12 bullets were sent around the neighborhood.

The object is to shoot the bad guys in their package, not shoot your own package. But, two nubians off the street and no more “alleged” robberies from them. Good job.

It's the People's Republic of Massachusetts. What do you expect?
