(CBS) The leading Republican in the House, and a vocal proponent of allowing an extension of the Bush-era tax cuts for all Americans, including the wealthiest 3% of earners, objected to charges by President Obama that Republicans are holding tax breaks for the bottom 97% of earners hostage unless the wealthiest also get an extension.
In a pre-taped interview to appear on CBS' "Face the Nation" Sunday, Republican House Minority Leader John Boehner said that, if approving a bill to extend breaks for middle class income Americans were "the only option," he would support it.
The Congressional Budget Office has estimated extending tax cuts for the wealthiest Americans would cost $700 billion over the next decade.
At a speech in Ohio earlier this week, Mr. Obama said, "With all the other budgetary pressures we have - with all the Republicans' talk about wanting to shrink the deficit - they would have us borrow $700 billion over the next 10 years to give a tax cut of about $100,000 each to folks who are already millionaires."

I watched the cBS VIDEO of FACE THE NATION, but not without distractions. I need to watch it again. IIRC, Scheiffer seemed mighty pleased with his interview.
FWIW, it's going to take two election cycles to get rid of more rino incumbents, more Marxist democrats, and lastly the Marxist child-in-Chief, so making the Bush tax cuts permanent isn't really necessary, since in two years it would be another good campaign issue right along with repealing obamacare.
Because you once again use sich a waste-of-time cliche money analogy which is shallow and meaningless.
He's NOT saying that he will compromise.
OK--so he's saying he doesn't want a tax hike on the rich but he'll go with it. That's not a compromise.
Come back when you understand English.
He is in the minority. He's saying that he will take the partial tax cut and he will fight for the rest of it when he as the majority. He's giving up nothing, he's getting part of what he wants and he going to try to get the rest of it.
I can't take another rerun of the "Let's say you have X dollars" thing so I'll cut this short--Boehner is trying to GAIN a majority. How does one do that in a year of unprecedented opposition to those in power--by saying he'll compromise (which he said he would, whether you understand that or not) OR by telling the country "I'm completely opposed to what this president wants, this is what I want--the Bush tax cuts staying put."
Leadership.
Refusing to let the anchor or the Dems control the discussion.
Showing the tax cuts being kept in place is so crucial to the economy that he doesn't say "Hey, I'll take em all, or some of em, whatever I can get.
You don't get it. Fine. No wonder you're defending him--he doesn't get it either.
Have a good night.
Imagine Nancy giving the Gaval to Michele. Or the keys to the jet. I would love it.
NOTHING is over your paygrade!!....(IMHO)
If Zero counted his taxes before they hatched then ALL the estimates the CBO gave were wrong by him planning on NEVER renewing the cuts, and then having to back-pedal.
He CAN NOT EVEN sign a Middle Class Tax Cut, and have the numbers he gave CBO stand-up.
Hes already spent the money.
If this is true and the news gets out it could REALLY PO a lot of people who are already mad as hell with him and his economic antics.
“Imagine Nancy giving the Gaval to Michele. Or the keys to the jet. I would love it.”
Yes for that I would crawl to the voting booth.
They both ran up trillions in debt; the difference is that the Republicans took years and the Democrats took months.
The end result is the same, except than when Republicans are in charge, the Republican cabal allow Democrats to run amok while they silence small-government conservatives.
Look John Boehner said if that is all I can get I will vote for it now!!! Meaning when and if the republicans take the house he push for the other Tax breaks also!!!!
No. It is shallow and meaningless to you because you don't get it.
OK--so he's saying he doesn't want a tax hike on the rich but he'll go with it. That's not a compromise.
Your description of what Boehner said using the paraphrase, "he'll go with it", is empty of meaning, and it suggests your lack of understanding of what he said and what the situation is.
More specifically, Boehner is NOT advocating for, nor is he voting on, a tax hike for the rich.
By default the Bush tax cuts are expiring. The default position will be higher taxes for all. It's from that higher-taxes, default position, that Boehner must decide what he is going to do. It is from that position, Boehner is advocating for across the board tax cuts. It is from that position, Boehner is saying that he will vote for whatever tax cuts he can get, and then he will try to get some more.
He is making no compromise.
You don't get it. Fine. No wonder you're defending him--he doesn't get it either.
No (lol), you don't get it, and it's simple logic and not Boehner that I defend.
Have a good night.
Gee thanks. Good night to you.
He ain’t even Speaker yet, and he’s selling us out already! Man, talk about counting your chickens before they hatch. Boehner got ‘em hatched, grown, cooked and eaten, and he don’t even have the eggs yet!
I have to give the dems credit that they have successfully convinced everyone that any family that brings in 250K or more is wealthy/rich. That they should be lumped in wit someone who brings in say a few million or more.
If you live in or near most metro areas, have a few kids, maybe some in college, 250K is a good amount, but it’s not you’re living in the lap of luxury.
For whatever reasons Republicans and conservatives have simply ceded the argument on this to the left. They never defend it. They just let it go unnotiecd that if you make 250K you’re Bill Gates.
It is not that the government is forced to pay because taxes are cut, it’s that they cannot begin to buy down the debt they have already run up and are paying interest on.
Tax cuts are meaningless without spending cuts.
Aint buying it.A rising tide raises all boats. That is what he should have said.Maintain taxcuts for everyone.Only a rat bastard voter wouldnt agree and who cares about them.
Has anyone else been mystified and dismayed over the rediculously expensive and un funny ads that our dept of health and human services through the Ad Council continues to run on Rush and other talk shows and TV?
I’m thinking these people, with our money, are spending millions of dollars on these rediculously unfunny ads to tout being a foster parent, or to adopt...
Multiply that one thousand fold, and you get the idea of the waste in federal govt.
Yes, withhold the tax cuts from everyone....EVeryone is entitled to the tax cuts. 10 % of Americans pay 70% of the taxes?
I’m sick of this. Everyday there’s something political and personal with this idiot in the WH. It’s like we have a HS president acting as our president...
Shamefull....
I think your interpretation is correct.
Even though Boehner seemed to offer a compromise yesterday, the rhetoric for Gibbsy last night and this morning is to still demonize the minority leader.
I think the White House blinked.
Oops. That should read “ the rhetoric FROM Gibbsy.”
It’s our knee-jerk culture. I blame Government schools.
