Boehner: I'll Drop Tax Cut for Rich If I Have To [reality check at post 121]
CBSNEWS ^

Posted on 09/12/2010 8:24:10 AM PDT by roses of sharon

(CBS) The leading Republican in the House, and a vocal proponent of allowing an extension of the Bush-era tax cuts for all Americans, including the wealthiest 3% of earners, objected to charges by President Obama that Republicans are holding tax breaks for the bottom 97% of earners hostage unless the wealthiest also get an extension.

In a pre-taped interview to appear on CBS' "Face the Nation" Sunday, Republican House Minority Leader John Boehner said that, if approving a bill to extend breaks for middle class income Americans were "the only option," he would support it.

The Congressional Budget Office has estimated extending tax cuts for the wealthiest Americans would cost $700 billion over the next decade.

At a speech in Ohio earlier this week, Mr. Obama said, "With all the other budgetary pressures we have - with all the Republicans' talk about wanting to shrink the deficit - they would have us borrow $700 billion over the next 10 years to give a tax cut of about $100,000 each to folks who are already millionaires."

I am at an absolute loss as to how your thought process is working on this. Other quotes or paraphrases from Boehner include the following:

But Boehner, R-Ohio, said that along with all the additional spending approved by Democrats, it is "bad policy" to exclude the job-creating tax brackets in an extension of Bush-era cuts.

"When you start to look at who is going to be taxed, about half of all small-business income will be taxed under the president's proposal. These are the very people that we expect to invest in the economy and to begin creating jobs. Why would we want to punish them?" he asked.

Everything Boehner has said supports the idea that he wants the current tax rates extended for all brackets. If he does not have that option, he will take whatever he can get. I fail to see how that's compromise. If somebody owes you $100 and you can only get $80, would you turn it down? If you're starving and you can only get a few morsels of food, would you turn it down?

He takes what he can get, whenever he can get it. It is the same thing the Rats have done for decades.

CBS leads...and fools believe.

I'm sorry, you're wrong. Your line should read:

CBS leads...and Boehner follows.

Bob Schieffer did exactly what liberal politicians and the MSM have been doing all along, controlling the debate by framing the matter at hand. Throughout the interview, right from the intro on, Bob Schieffer said this was about "Will the Republicans stand in the way of President Obama's tax cuts for the middle class in order to give tax cuts to the rich?"

Is that what you think this is about? Didn't think so.

I bet you thought it was about what I did--Bush's tax cuts for all, and will Obama be raising taxes.

You or I would start the interview by saying, "First off, Bob, let's get the issue straight. This isn't about the president riding to the rescue of the middle class, this is about the democrats RAISING TAXES."

Schieffer asked his question over and over and over, and did Boehner stop him? Did he correct him? Did he strongly refuse to play the liberals' game?

No--he did what we all claim to be sick of, he let the liberals determine the game.

He is the same inside the beltway type who can't think on his feet in front of a camera, fumbles the message, and lets the lib reporter play him like a piano.

CBS leads, Boehner follows, and only a fool believes otherwise.

From the article:

"At a speech in Ohio earlier this week, Mr. Obama said, "With all the other budgetary pressures we have - with all the Republicans' talk about wanting to shrink the deficit - they would have us borrow $700 billion over the next 10 years to give a tax cut of about $100,000 each to folks who are already millionaires.""

IMHO, ZERO has been caught in a BIG trap.

If he has to BORROW 700 BILLION to cover a tax cut for the "rich", it would have to mean that ANY CBO NUMBERS put out by ZERO, concerning ANY of the crap he and the dems have passed, would have had to have numbers that reflected him NOT renewing ANY of the tax cuts.

So IMHO, if Boehner calls his hand, goes along with Zero's idea, that would then REMOVE THAT MIDDLE CLASS TAX REVENUE from any CBO numbers Zero used to make his numbers "not cost the American taxpayer one thin dime" on ANY of his schemes he has jammed thru the dem controlled congress.

Any negotiating by Boehner could (and should IMHO) also simply add the little phrase "AND MAKE THEM PERMANENT !!", which then throws it back in ZERO's economic lap, making HIM the one raising taxes on the middle class in a year or two. If he gives in and signs what Boehner has NOW agreed to, he's screwed BIG TIME because everything he ran thru CBO with the non-renewed tax cuts now makes the taxpayer have to pay more in taxes to make his numbers work, and instead of a break even deal like Zero promised, he tried to pull a fast one, counting on Boehner to NOT agree to a partial renewal, and Zero making the repubs look like "the party of NO".

If this ever gets to Zero's desk, there is NO WAY he can sign it because he needs EVERY DIME OF NON-RENEWAL tax revenue to make his CBO numbers even come close.

If this IS the case, imagine the political fallout from his "little scheme". If there is a FReeper who could run some numbers on this, I would like to know if this was Zero's plan, NOW that Boehner has called him out, all of Zero's legislation should be able to be "reconfigured" with and without the Bush Tax Cut "renewal".

This would then expose him as not ever planning to sign the renewal of ANY BUSH TAX CUTS!

It makes more sense to me now why his "economic team" doesn't want to be around when this SHTF.

“If the only option I have is to vote for some of those tax reductions, I’ll vote for it. But I’ve been making the point now for months that we need to extend all the current rates for all Americans if we want to get our economy going again, and we want to get jobs in America. … I would hope that there would be an open debate, an open process, and let’s let the Congress decide what the current tax rates should be and for who they should be. I think there’s a growing chorus on Capitol Hill to extend all of these tax rates, and I would hope that we would do it.” - John Boehner

I believe that Boehner’s statement indicated a strong preference for across the board tax cuts and of course I agree with that sentiment. However, it is vitally important to show the other side that your position is unequivocally firm and not to show the opposition any areas that could be up for compromise before engaging them in the court of public opinion. We desperately need someone who can get the conservative economic message in an articulate and succinct fashion.

Paul Ryan for speaker???

The Congressional Budget Office has estimated extending tax cuts for the wealthiest Americans would cost $700 billion over the next decade.

Taxes are not assessed based upon wealth. A wealthy person making $50,000 per year pays the same person as a poor person making $50,000 per year. I don't know why Republicans continue to allow Democrats a free pass on playing the class envy card.

I fail to see how that's compromise. If somebody owes you $100 and you can only get $80, would you turn it down? If you're starving and you can only get a few morsels of food, would you turn it down?

Why would you compromise before you even get to the negotiation table?

Boehner should be out there forcefully telling the American people "This is not about Republicans blocking Democrat attempts to give a middle class tax break, it is about Democrats trying to raise taxes."

Obama is playing this perfectly. He wants those tax cuts gone. But does he just say "I'm letting them lapse?" No. He divides and conquers--"I'm only going to let them go up for the RICH!"

He's now turned the game from one of Democrat = Another Liberal Tax Hiker to Obama = Fighter Against The Rich.

Either way, he's getting his tax raise.

So what does Boehner do?

He ALLOWS Obama to frame the debate just the way Obama wants in order to make himself look good.

Obama started at zero, then moved to fifty by asking for part of what he wanted.

Boehner SHOULD be starting at 100--"The Democrats want to raise your taxes"--and come to his current position AFTER getting more from Obama DURING negotiations.

So he willingly went from 100 to 50.

You talk about getting $80 when you're owed $100, but that's not what Boehner's doing--he's giving $80 when he should be saying "I'm not giving you anything."

"Rep. Boehner: "Bob, we don't know what the bill's going to say, alright? If the only option I have is to vote for those at 250 and below, of course I'm going to do that. But I'm going to do everything I can to fight to make sure that we extend the current tax rates for all Americans." That's a direct quote. Please explain to me where I am suddenly believing anyone except the man himself. I hear these words and decide for myself that this is compromise when we should not be compromising. No "LSM" anybody told me that..

LOL. A compromise?

What exactly is Boehner compromising away?

Let's say a thief steals a hundred dollars from you and as he drives away he drops fifty dollars on the floor. Do you pick the fifty dollars up or do you refuse to pick it up because it isn't the full amount?

The Democrats are in the majority. Boehner isn't giving anything away. If the Democrats propose a partial tax reduction, Boehner is saying he will vote for that and then fight for the rest.

There is NO compromise and Boehner isn't "dropping" anything, as the LSM says that he is.

Boehner and Gingrich alike apparently are too brainwashed to assert this simple yet critical truth.

What Gingrich proposed on Fox News Sunday is to accept Obama's terms with the proviso that no additional spending will take place if the GOP approves this plan. Call Obama's bluff and watch the proposal fall by the wayside.

Of course it is not a compromise. The GOP lacks the numbers to do ANYTHING in Congress at this time. If the Rats offer to reduce taxes on ANYONE, ANYTIME, the GOP should jump on it and demand more.

YOu guys have to stop reading straight from the playbook.

Are you aware that there is an election going on between now and the time when the Bush tax cuts are phased out?

Boehner has more power now than he ever has due to the THREAT of a Republican takeover. Of course there is compromising to do--but only when you HAVE to compromise.

You don't go on television BEFORE there's even a plan on the table and say "I'll compromise!"

You start out saying "I will not let you frame this as Republicans standing in the way of a middle class tax cut."

You can LOL all you want, but next time you buy a car, bring along someone who wouldn't start by saying "I'm willing to pay sticker price." There is NO compromise and Boehner isn't "dropping" anything, as the LSM says that he is.

You are right on this ... “We desperately need someone who can get the conservative economic message in an articulate and succinct fashion.”

Its tough to do when the lib media are shills for Obama and setting traps for them.
Frankly, The Democrats are setting up the election to be about ‘tax cuts for the rich’ and Boehner has deflected that by sticking to his position but opening up possibility for compromise, defaning also ‘the party of NO’ claim. It defangs a Democrat talking point.

The election SHOULD be about the Democrats’ failed economic policies, their outrageous deficits, their overspending, their attacks on energy, and their unconstituional mandates in Obamacare. THAT IS THE ELECTION.

They are trying to make it about Boehner or Bush or anything BUT their failed policies. ... Boehner is not playing along.

What he said was still VERY STUPID — what does he mean “if the only option I have”?! There is NEVER just one option.

See my post 128.

Here is what he DID say:

“If the only option I have is to vote for those at 250 and below,” he added, “of course I’m going to do that. But I’m going to do everything I can to fight to make sure that we extend the current tax rates for all Americans.”

Reading from the "playbook" my foot! Why post such a waste-of-time, throw-away line.

You don't go on television BEFORE there's even a plan on the table and say "I'll compromise!".

He's NOT saying that he will compromise. He is in the minority. He's saying that he will take the partial tax cut and he will fight for the rest of it when he as the majority. He's giving up nothing, he's getting part of what he wants and he going to try to get the rest of it.

You can LOL all you want, but next time you buy a car, bring along someone who wouldn't start by saying "I'm willing to pay sticker price."

Your example doesn't match the situation. A person buying a car has something that the salesman wants, it's the buyers money. Boehner doesn't have a thing.

If a thief steals a hundred dollars from you and as he drives away he drops fifty dollars on the floor, you wouldn't pick up the fifty dollars, and then report the thiefs license plate and identification to the police?

You would leave the fifty dollars on the floor and let it blow away, because it isn't the full amount?

Really ¿
