Cuba's Fidel Castro Gives Up on Communism: "The Cuban model doesn't even work for us anymore"

"The Cuban model doesn't even work for us anymore," Castro tells an American journalist when asked whether the Cuban economic and political system was worth exporting.

WASHINGTON – Cuba’s Fidel Castro used an interview with a U.S. magazine to urge Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad to abandon Holocaust denial and refrain from “slandering” Jews and confess that the Cuban model doesn't work.

Castro, whose recent public pronouncements have been dominated by warnings that a U.S. or Israeli attack on Iran could spark a nuclear war, invited a journalist with The Atlantic, Jeffrey Goldberg, to Havana to discuss the writer’s recent article on Israel and Iran.

In the first installment of several Atlantic articles on their exchanges, Castro told Goldberg that the Iranian government must understand the consequences of anti-Semitic theology.

...

In the second installment from a series of meetings with Castro, Goldberg says Castro was asked whether the Cuban economic and political system was worth exporting.

"The Cuban model doesn't even work for us anymore," Castro responded. He didn't expand on the comment.

In any case, I don't think Castro meant to imply that dictatorship doesn't work. It worked for him.

Castro started out as a Catholic. Made a deal with the devil. Now regrets it and is trying to return to the fold and cut a deal with the other Party.
Either that or he just wants to be remembered as a Castro convertible.

who thought we’d see this day, when Fidel Castro sounds more sensible than the current POTUS????

I doubt that Castro has really learned very much, it’s highly unlikely that someone like him is now having serious “second thoughts”..... but maybe he’s having burps of indigestion that feel like “second thoughts”

Put it another way... in the eight years of the reign of terror of the KKKlinton administration, I only saw two groups of people ever try to stand up to the beast and face it down, that being the Mormons in Utah and the Serbs.

“One of history’s greatest ironies is the the USA may be the last refuge for hard core communists.”

That’s because it’s a lot easier to espouse an ideology when you don’t have to live the reality of it. We have Hollywood liberals who live a lifestyle of incredible affluence, shop in exclusive shops, and vacation in all the ‘right’ places, but who like to think they are socialists. We have Upper East Side liberals in Manhattan who eat at the trendy restaurants, drink call name liquor and fine wine, and wear very high end clothes, who also like to think of themselves as ‘progressives’ and socialists. They have the luxury of being insulated from the reality of what they think they support.

“Are you listening Michael Moore, Dan Rather and Baba Wawa?”

You realize 2 of the 3 are near death...literally? And the 3rd is a bloated pig soon to expire in his own shit.

“Castro convertible.”

Is that with the hood up because it is always sunny in Cuba?

He’s so close to death, he probably doesn’t care anymore. He’s the political version of that 92 year old man in the nursing home who has 6 months to live, so he hits on every female nurse with the attitude that no sexual harassment suit would get to court before he takes a dirt nap anyway.

Then he needs to open up his Cuban nation prison and let freedom flourish.

Fidel Castro is far more lucid than Barack Obama.

Only the West believe the communist insanity any longer. What's next, Hugo Chavez de-nationalizing industries?

Misleading headline. He didn’t say he was giving up on communism, just that the original Cuban version wasn’t working anymore (as if it or any version of communism/socialism ever could). Big difference. I doubt very much Castro is giving up on communism.
