Haley Barbour Tells Pro-Life Republicans to Ditch Social Issues in 2010 Elections

Washington, DC -- Haley Barbour is the latest potential Republican presidential candidate to suggest that social issues like abortion should be taken off the table while making the economy the main focus. Despite the fact that polls show Americans strongly oppose the pro-abortion health care law, Barbour says fiscal issues should take priority.

LOL, like telling the pro-life party to drop abortion as an issue?

Cite Haley Barbour's exact words that you have just stated.

Hint: you can't, because he didn't say *that*.

How many “fiscal conservatives” won without the social conservatives? Aside from Christie and Simpson I can’t think of many over the past 50 years.

I said the social conservatives were necessary—just not sufficient. No conservatives win without them.

It is the very subject of this thread. Read the article and see him call for dropping social concerns, for quote after quote
He did say that, it is what the article is about, and he agrees with Daniels on surrendering on social issues.

"When asked about comments by Indiana Gov. Mitch Daniels, a Republican, that said the GOP should call a “truce on the so-called social issues” to focus on fiscal matters, Barbour said he supported the sentiment.P

The headline is misleading. I read three articles. Abortion was not mentioned.

I’m not talking about the headline, I’m talking about what he said, and of course the WORD abortion is not used but all the euphemisms and references are to it and the whole subject is the social issues, IE abortion.

Mitch Daniels called for a surrender on social issues, a one party “truce” where we drop the social issues, period, to quote my description “LOL, like telling the pro-life party to drop abortion as an issue?” Haley came out in public to support Mitch Daniels and to lend his leadership and influence to gaining success in that surrender, and of course to do what all anti-social conservatives do—attack Sarah Palin.

“When asked about comments by Indiana Gov. Mitch Daniels, a Republican, that said the GOP should call a “truce on the so-called social issues” to focus on fiscal matters, Barbour said he supported the sentiment.

A candidate’s stance on abortion “ain’t going to change anybody’s vote this year,” he said.”

I’m not talking about Mitch Daniels here either. You’re beating a dead horse. Haley Barbour said no such thing like you are desperately trying to attribute to him. He’s always been 100% pro-life, so he’s not about to “dump” on pro-life conservatives. I know precisely what he said.

You also know that I solidly support Sarah Palin, so this discussion is a waste of my time. Haley Barbour is the governor of MS and I own a home here. I am very familiar with his policies and his conservative record.

“You’re beating a dead horse. Haley Barbour said no such thing like you are desperately trying to attribute to him.”

Then what was he saying? What does this mean?

“Any issue that takes people’s eye off of unemployment, job creation, economic growth, taxes, spending, deficits, debts is taking your eye off the ball,” Barbour said

““They’re not running for anything,” Barbour said of Palin and Beck. “I don’t know what all they’re talking about. They draw huge crowds, and enthusiastic crowds, but what somebody is talking about that is not directly related to campaigns, then I’m sort of not paying a lot of attention.”

“But if somebody goes to campaign for governor candidate x, I would hope that somebody would stay focused on the issues that matter to the campaign: jobs, the economy, taxes, spending, debt, deficits,” Barbour continued. “You run down rabbit trails, you’re wasting— you’re using up valuable resources that could be used to talk to people about what they care about.”

When asked about comments by Indiana Gov. Mitch Daniels, a Republican, that said the GOP should call a “truce on the so-called social issues” to focus on fiscal matters, Barbour said he supported the sentiment.

A candidate’s stance on abortion “ain’t going to change anybody’s vote this year,” he said.

“But, if Barbour begins telling pro-life voters they need to take a back seat and that the issue of abortion won’t determine how they vote, his potential campaign may be dead before it begins.” http://www.lifenews.com/nat6683.html

I have only seen Life News excerpted. If Life News has to be excerpted, you have almost posted the entire article.

Agreed. I think you need the pro-lifers, the tax-cutters, and the government-shrinkers. I happen to be all three.

I was hoping that you would respond to the post rather than tell me about excerpting, but the only thing from lifenews in that post is the single sentence, in quotes, that is touching the link (the very last sentence in the post).

I agree in principle, but the same message needs to go to BOTH sides. Take the social BS off the table and get control to save our Country. It’s not just pro-life, it’s all the other stuff, if the R’s get all wrapped around the axle over stem-cell research and global non-warming then they don’t deserve to return to power because that’s no better than what the stupid Dems have done with healthcare, cap and tax, and the rest.

It’s the economy, stupid!

Wwwweeellll, let me tell ya. When “social issues” are less important than money, then Houston, we have a problem. And the money problems will get worse because the social issues are a window into the soul of a nation.

So. Abortion isn’t an issue that matters? It’s “running down the rabbit hole”?

Barbour may be a social conservative, but it is clear that he is catering to the RINO wing of the Party in order to use his RNC credentials for donations and supports.

So, Haley . . .

The anti-abortion wing is also opposed to anti-illegal immigration. Is opposing illegal immigration ‘running down the rabbit hole’ as well?

This election HAS focused on the economy? Barbour didn’t need to point that out. He also didn’t need to suggest that my views on life isn’t ‘an issue that matters’.

Still, the Party insiders have no clue why the base is upset with the Party apparatus.

Pathetic.

The economy is the main concern of most people today! The Dems would love nothing better than to get off the economy and discuss abortion. If you don’t “get it,” you’re the stupid one!

He’s right.

Did we not just see over 100,000 people at the 8/28 rally? Is Barbour blind? These people and millions more believe that our country is going down the tubes morally, socially, and spiritually. They understand that you can’t reject the ten commandments and still believe that there is a basis for our Constitution or our laws. They want a return not only to the Constitution, but also to the moral principals behind it.

By telling Christian conservatives to put a sock in it, he has just kissed 2012 goodbye. He didn’t have to say anything. The base is fired up both spiritually and politically. Barbour is wearing his secularity on his sleeve and displaying it when it’s not necessary. I thought he was smarter than that.

I don’t think that Barbour is telling candidates to change their positions, to become more liberal. I don’t think he’s saying to hide their positions.

He’s really just saying to stay on message which he calls jobs and the economy and I would call limited government conservativism. Stay on message. It’s a winner in 2010.

I don’t think conservatives should sit by while other Republicans try to say Gay Marriage is ok, though.
