The United States' top commander in Afghanistan has warned that a planned Koran-burning event in Florida could put US troops in danger.
Gen. David Petraeus added his voice to mounting protests from both the US and abroad over the Dove World Outreach Center's plans to burn Korans on Saturday to mark the anniversary of the September 11 terror attacks. His comments ratcheted up the pressure on once-obscure pastor Terry Jones to call off the event.
The controversy comes as some 120,000 US and allied troops are waging a counter-insurgency campaign against the Taliban in Afghanistan, a campaign whose goals include winning support for the US-backed government from the largely Muslim population.
General Petraeus said that burning Korans "is precisely the kind of action the Taliban uses and could cause significant problems not just here, but everywhere in the world we are engaged with the Islamic community," according to CNN.
""It could endanger troops and it could endanger the overall effort in Afghanistan," Gen. David Petraeus said in a statement issued Monday ...
"Even the rumor that it might take place has sparked demonstrations such as the one that took place in Kabul yesterday," he said. "Were the actual burning to take place, the safety of our soldiers and civilians would be put in jeopardy and accomplishment of the mission would be made more difficult."
"Mr. Jones, the pastor of the center in Gainesville, Florida, has touted the activity as "International Burn the Koran Day." Jones also authored a book titled "Islam is of the Devil," which has a Facebook page and Twitter account.

For the record. I am suspicious of all Islamists or Islamofacists and I don't have good vibrations concerning the Imam of the proposed Ground Zero Mosque. But I don't think anything constructive is accomplished when you stoop so low(at their level) and burn any book, including this one.
Someone on this thread reported that the U.S. Military ordered the burning of Bibles. Is that true? If it is, them it was a stupid act as well.
We are not going to be victorious by burning books. it makes us look silly and desperate.

A bookburning might not be the most mature way of protesting but in this case the message to violent Muslims is that we are through cringing in the face of their threats. We’re done being the ones that are scared of them. We need to give them reasons to be scared of us. That’s the language they speak.
Bush had the right idea after 9/11 - take the fight to the enemy and kill as many of them as you can. Seek them out and destroy them. Make their losses so great that it forces them to reconsider their murderous jihad against the West.
I don’t give a sh*t how dedicated they are to their twisted ideology - if they suffer badly enough, they’re going to reconsider their current course of action against us. Kissing allah’s backside is one thing, seeing everyone around you being blown to bits is another.
This is the way to win against radical islam, not by holding a silly book burning.

Bibles in Afgan languages could only be there for prosletyzing. The troops have no business promoting any religion over there and the organization that sent them should know better.
They burned books in Acts 19, so it’s not “UN-Christian” UNless you meant “United Nations-Christians”
I agree that’s the kind of Christianity the UN would invent.
When the animals break cover our snipers have better shots.
We’ll get a lot more converts when they fear us.

Then why are our troops dying to preserve Islam?
Just a lot of Pauls.
Demonstrating for the muslim world how a private American citizen can be threatened into willfully suppressing his own constitutional rights will help us defeat the terrorists how?

There is a huge and significant difference between burning a few books sa an effigy in denouncing something and PURGING every book in the country. No responsible people are calling for a purge AFAIK.
For instance, I own a koran (electronically) and I'll keep it and read it yet I support the burning of a limited number of korans publicly to make a point just as offensive to the muslims who support building a mosque at ground zero.
A bit of tit-for-tat defiance is appropriate and good in a real war. We cannot maintain our own freedoms by simply lying down and letting them overrun us.
They need to realize that it is not worth it to them trying to fight against us as they will not succeed in doing so. They won't get that message without a few pointed barbs in their general direction.
Ann Coulter had it right nine years ago.
"We should invade their countries, kill their leaders and convert them to Christianity. We weren't punctilious about locating and punishing only Hitler and his top officers. We carpet-bombed German cities; we killed civilians. That's war. And this is war."
You’re really stretching to the point of tearing apart. All those preachers burning books — and no repenters. No analogous scene exists in the New Testament.
And of course this would only be a new Islam with “Christianity” stamped on the book’s cover. Christianity is not spread by the sword, period.
