Gen. Petraeus: Dove World Outreach Center's 'Burn a Koran Day' endangers US troops
Christian Science Monitor ^ | 09/07/2010 | Jonathan Adams

Posted on 09/07/2010 6:19:50 AM PDT by SeekAndFind

The United States' top commander in Afghanistan has warned that a planned Koran-burning event in Florida could put US troops in danger.

Gen. David Petraeus added his voice to mounting protests from both the US and abroad over the Dove World Outreach Center's plans to burn Korans on Saturday to mark the anniversary of the September 11 terror attacks. His comments ratcheted up the pressure on once-obscure pastor Terry Jones to call off the event.

The controversy comes as some 120,000 US and allied troops are waging a counter-insurgency campaign against the Taliban in Afghanistan, a campaign whose goals include winning support for the US-backed government from the largely Muslim population.

General Petraeus said that burning Korans "is precisely the kind of action the Taliban uses and could cause significant problems – not just here, but everywhere in the world we are engaged with the Islamic community," according to CNN.

""It could endanger troops and it could endanger the overall effort in Afghanistan," Gen. David Petraeus said in a statement issued Monday ...

"Even the rumor that it might take place has sparked demonstrations such as the one that took place in Kabul yesterday," he said. "Were the actual burning to take place, the safety of our soldiers and civilians would be put in jeopardy and accomplishment of the mission would be made more difficult."

"Mr. Jones, the pastor of the center in Gainesville, Florida, has touted the activity as "International Burn the Koran Day." Jones also authored a book titled "Islam is of the Devil," which has a Facebook page and Twitter account.

I recently heard an interview w/Robt Sopenser who correctly identified islam as a political movement (like communism) but uses the false image of religion to protect itself.

Gen Petraeus;

Keep your eye on the ball in front of you, focus on killing the bastards you are tasked with killing. Don’t worry about our liberties here in the US or how the exercise thereof may endanger us (our children) elsewhere.

A few burned copies of any (privately owned) book or flag won’t change the mind set they already have, don’t forget they hate us regardless of what we do or don’t do.

When the time comes for us to worry what some 7th centuryish woman hater/anti-western thug thinks of our natural rights and endowed liberites is the time when you need to (have the president) recall me to active duty....

Kind Regards;

Christianity is not spread by the sword, period.

Islam is. Removing that sword from the throats of of its victims would be a gift to the people of those countries.

"We should invade their countries, kill their leaders and convert them to Christianity. We weren't punctilious about locating and punishing only Hitler and his top officers. We carpet-bombed German cities; we killed civilians. That's war. And this is war."

Yeah, but it doesn’t burn well when I use toilet paper in the printer and then use it.

This will end up being Obama’s excuse for losing the war and bailing out. It's always blame America first with these Rats.

Converting them to Christianity by sword is impossible by very definition.

I’m convinced that obama forced Petraeus to make a public statement on this. This makes me sick.

Hey you’re on a roll.

Pretty soon, we can send it to David Letterman for his TOP 10 list and then make a booklet out of your list.

who correctly identified islam as a political movement (like communism) but uses the false image of religion to protect itself.

My understanding, in part from reading the koran itself, is that it is a blueprint for a complete society including personal, governmental, judicial, religious and societal elements.

It is also not at all voluntary. A muslim must accept all parts of islam or face severe punishments under their sharia code of justice. This includes getting every person in the world to covert to islam, become a tribute-paying slave to islam, or killing those who won't do either. This jihad is mandatory.

Islam is the opposite of our Constitutional Republic and the personal rights and freedoms we enjoy. Islam cannot exist in the United States at the same time as our own Constitution. This is why we must literally fight the war that they have started or we literally lose our very civilization.

Converting them to Christianity by sword is a straw man of your own invention. Removing the sword of your beloved Jihadists from the throats of their victims would be a gift to the people of those countries, as much as the prospect of their deliverance upsets you.

Bummer announced a cut-and-run date before the planned protest gained world notoriety. This is too easy.

I continue to be correct. Paul was not a recent convert. Nor are these Gainesville Christians.

Jesus was no Caspar Milquetoast. Those who think Christianity is all hugs and kumbaya need to read Jesus:

You belong to your father, the devil, and you want to carry out your father's desire. He was a murderer from the beginning, not holding to the truth, for there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks his native language, for he is a liar and the father of lies.

He would have said the same to mohammed.

RE: A muslim must accept all parts of islam or face severe punishments under their sharia code of justice

Here’s the question — WHICH INTERPRETATION of the Koran should a Muslim accept?

Yes, there’s the Koran, and there’s also various INTERPRETATIONS of the Koran.

If every Muslim agreed on the Koran, then they wouldn’t be killing each other (or will they ?).

What straw man? You propounded support for just that with your approving quote from Coulter, who usually does well but really stepped in flaming manure with that one.

You continue to stress laughably irrelevant points.

Paul presided at the scene of a repentance.

‘Nuff said.

Military burns unsolicited Bibles sent to Afghanistan http://articles.cnn.com/2009-05-20/world/us.military.bibles.burned_1_bibles-al-jazeera-english-military-personnel?_s=PM:WORLD

Some of the same posters who are wailing at the prospect of a church exercising it right to free speech are defending the burning of Bibles by the military. It's nauseating, but all too predictable.

You make an excellent point. They don't all agree, which is all the more reason that they shouldn't engage in - and why we should never accept - a system in which those who disagree with each other believe that their god wants them each to kill the other as well as those who believe in a different God altogether.

This is a 7th century world view that needs to be "enlightened."
