MILWAUKEE A combative President Barack Obama rolled out a long-term jobs program Monday that will exceed $50 billion to rebuild roads, railways and runways, and coupled it with a blunt campaign-season assault on Republicans for causing Americans' hard economic times.
GOP leaders instantly assailed Obama's proposal, which is also likely to be met with reluctance by many Democrats to approve additional spending and higher federal deficits just weeks before elections that will determine control of Congress.
That means the plan has low odds of becoming law this year. Administration officials said that even quick congressional approval would not produce jobs until sometime next year, raising questions about what, if any, pre-election impact it would have beyond showing job-hungry voters that the White House is trying to ease unemployment.

America is about innovation and creativity. What we need is for the government on every level to get out of the way and stop taxing success. And take all that grant/bribe money and use it for highways, roads and bridges.
Sheesh..this administration even said the “Program” will not produce jobs til next year....Americans are STILL looking for the jobs from the last $814 Billion Dollar stimulas...and this new stimulas will take even longer....yet the last one was suppose to be an “immediate” stimulas for job creation.
Further Bo going after oil profits to pay for this?...so tearing them down will not cause them to leave or cut their own employees to cover those loses? He’ll drive them out even further than he already has....which he wants to do so the new green energy junk can be built to fill the coffers of all the Democrates who are invested in it.
This is alll about an obvious pre-election political move to attempt to shore up his failing popularity....which is all but gone now....and to continue to tear down our countries producers...while filling thier own pocket with handsome profits in failing energy inovations which will increase all utility expenses...and the american people will find coming out of their pockets to pay for. It’s all a win win for the elite community.
Progressives believe their Porkulus didn’t work because Republicans and independents are pissed that that the Porkulus didn’t work. Brilliant thinking!
And if Imam Obama (pbuh) is campaigning in Wisconsin of all places, Comrade Feingold must be in really big trouble.
Well, that really is the crux of the argument.
I had this debate with an employee of mine after the speech. He said it worked during the depression, and building roads etc put people to work.
What he didn’t understand, is that those folks went and used their money to buy products. Product that were made in America. That made all sorts of business grow.
Now, most manufacturing business has been forced to leave America, due to high taxes, enviro tarrifs and fees, a hostile union environment, a hostile white house, years of poor education, a forced minimum wage, and a looming VAT tax and even more burden on manufacturing with Cap and Trade threats.
Even if the union thugs make more money leaning on a shovel, they will spend it on overseas products. This will increase our trade deficit. In the end, we will be no better off.
The longer this charade goes on, the more likely it will collapse America when it does come time to pay the piper. I’m all for that happening sooner than later. It will be cheaper and easier to rebuild the sooner the common man gets this through his thick skull.
We need to bring back manufacturing. We need to focus on making products people want, not subsidising wind mills and solar panels and green garbage cans. We need to once again lay off of our factories, and let them produce...at a profit (yeah thats the thing, they have to make a profit). Instead of punishing them for being successful, we should encourage success in our manufacturing sector.
I wish our nation had a million factory owners who were billionaires. Libs wish all factory owners who show a profit were in jail. That is where they and I differ.
The Republicans need to drive home the point again and again that it is the Democrats who have controlled Congress for the last 3 years and 8 months. When they took control, the deficit was $162 billion and unemployment was under 5%. The upcoming election is a Congressional election - not a Presidential election. And it is the economic policies of Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid that got us in this current mess.
Thank you. Excellent comments. So good, I can’t add to it.
Are you out of your mind? Import tariffs are what caused the Great Depression. See: Smoot-Hawley Tariff
We should always encourage free trade. As far as manufacturing jobs going overseas, those jobs are lost either way unless you intend to subsidize those union jobs. When was the last time you bought an American-made tire or an American-made pair of tennis shoes? The consumer will always look for the best utility for each dollar spent. Always. If you put a 40% tariff on Brazilian tires, then the consumer has that much less money to purchase something else. So the money that was going to go towards creating another job instead goes either to the government or to some corrupt inefficient union shop that makes substandard tires.
The one thing missing from our current economic situation is certainty. The current climate is too unpredictable. With talk of cap and trade, health care mandates, pending tax increases, banking takeovers, and other fascist proddings of the factors of production, no business in its right mind would risk precious capital for future expansion. If one wanted the economy to improve (which this Administration does not), one would set policy for the next five years and not change it. This policy would include elimination of corporate taxes, decrease in capital gains tax, elimination of government borrowing, and implementation of a flat tax. Allow people to invest their social security taxes into one of several government-approved private investments instead of handing that money over to the Treasury to cover current expenditures. All these things would help. Starting a trade war with the rest of the world - a world which happens to already be recovering - would not.

Assail, does he?Obama?
How come his opposition never "assails" Obama. They always attack Omana, and are therefore racists.
But when Obama assails , he is not a rascist?
I conclude that when Obama Assails, he proves he is a a cracker-hating rascist!
SMD Obama!
Obama speech outline:
Straw man. Straw man. Lie. Solipsism. Non-sequitor. lie.
“Since the adoption of the 1934 Trade Agreements Act, the United States government has engaged in a free trade policy which has destroyed or endangered important segments of our domestic agriculture and industry, undercut the wages of our working men and women, and totally destroyed or shipped abroad the jobs of hundreds of thousands of workers. This free trade policy is being used to foster socialism in America through welfare and subsidy programs.”

Most of the “credit” extended to the USA is based upon previous generations of wealth created here by a free society.
It will not return until We the People divorce ourselves from “progressive taxation” and fund the Federal operations of the country in the manner they were intended by the Founders.
“Are you out of your mind? Import tariffs are what caused the Great Depression. See: Smoot-Hawley Tariff”
I don’t claim to be an economist, I am an old manufacturing engineer that came up through the ranks from a start sanding boiler tubes in Jacksonville Shipyards in the 1960s for $2.19/hour, working 12 hours a day, seven days a week, then facing layoffs for as much as six months until the next ship came in. I have worked in the boom years from Florida to New York to Texas, and lost everything I’ve owned several times in those same places. When I started learning my trade skills that later served to build my engineering reputation, there were very little choices about whether you joined the local unions or not; Union activity in those days usually meant better working conditions and at least a dime more an hour in my pocket. And, while I am not now a union supporter, at various times I was a member of Firemen and Oilers, UAW, CWA, Iron Ship Builders, Teamsters, United Iron Workers, and United Steel Workers.I am also proud of the fact that in more than forty five years, I have only drawn three months of unemployment compensation and no welfare.
I have not only witnessed the decline of our manufacturing capabilities in the country for years, but I experienced personally the results of what we have allowed to happen in the name of “Free Trade”. Two years ago, a lack of manufacturing forced me to close my consulting business, which has provided an income for my family since 1997, and I took up contract project management. Guess where the projects went.
So you good people can lecture me about economics, but I would point out that the system that we have now has broken the backbone of a once rich and powerful nation, and until some measures are in place to protect small business owners from the corruption of our government and also from unfair competition from abroad, we will continue our descent into oblivion.
To The Dear Leader (hoping it will grow inside his thick head):
There are THREE Fs to remember about taxes :
* FIX IT (make it SMALL and COMPETITIVE)
* FLATTEN IT (make it SIMPLE)
* FORGET IT (make it PERMANENT)
Any TEMPORARY tax rebates, credits, cuts, or targetting is only going to confound businesses further because they CANNOT PLAN AHEAD. You only create UNCERTAINTY.
Also, targetting taxes to favored businesses will only cause CRONYISM, CORRUPTION, PORK BARREL SPENDING and all sorts of problems your stimulus actually caused.
Did anyone else here notice that Obamugabe was in A.M.E “preacher” mode in this speech?
I heard him on the radio and immediately knew the demographics of the crowd he was in front of.
“”Import tariffs are what caused the Great Depression. See: Smoot-Hawley Tariff”
Harry, I’m with you. The Smoot Harley thing is one of the biggest myths about the Depression. Another is that Roosevelt got us out of it.
“Are you out of your mind? Import tariffs are what caused the Great Depression. See: Smoot-Hawley Tariff”
Read it. Totally unconvinced that the Smoot Hawley was the cause. One of the big myths about the Depression. Also, the writer’s assertion that “Keynesians” are the ones who challenge that exporters’ myth was straw man stupid.
Import tariffs have never helped this country.
Reducing options to buy is what created the crap cars that came out of Detroit in the 70’s and 80’s.
Now, as far as unions go, good for you. They had their place. They had their time. But the ponzi scheme is over. It is collapsing.
What made America competitive was not unions, as much as your union bally-hooing would like you to believe. It was the fact that we could be competitive. It was an even playing field. The owner of an American manufacturing company did not have to pay exorbitant taxes, liability insurance, eco-taxes, and shakedowns from lawyers for not having handicap access and folks who claim to have carpal tunnel syndrome from doing repetitive jobs.
Labor costs are not a small factor when doing business in America, but they are a factor nonetheless, and many times, they are the straw that breaks the camels back.
I pay my guys from 15 an hour to 38 an hour, depending on their status, but my actual costs per employee are twice that per year.
We could have gone union when we opened this shop, but our guys decided not to, because our union was absorbed by the teamsters years ago, and promised pensions were cut in half. I said I can offer you either journeyman 28 an hour as a union shop, or you can take the extra money I have to contribute, and the extra hassle, and make an extra 10 bucks an hour, invest it yourself, put it in a bank, stick it under your mattress, or blow it on women and booze. They all went for the extra 10 bucks an hour.
I don’t need uncle sam forcing you to buy my product or my services. I need uncle sam out of my life. If uncle sam would stop regulating me to death, if every town and municipality didn’t want a pay off for me to work in that town, if every politician that comes through didn’t want a hand out, if I didn’t have to retain a legal team on stand-by for every John Edwards out there patrolling my parking lot, and if I knew what the hell they were going to legislate with the next breeze in the air, I could compete just fine with other nations.
As far as us ever going union. If they voted to unionize at this point, and took away my power to fire at will, it is after all my company, which I built, and I risked every damn penny year after year to keep, I would close the doors and retire. If you or any other union thug don’t like that, then go, mortgage your home, and start a company of your own.
The only “unfair” trade I see abroad is their lack of government interference. I am sure there may be more to the story, and Krugman or whoever can argue that till they are blue in the face to me. But that is the main obstacle in our country getting back on its feet. Everyone wants “green”, but only if it means hamstringing America, while they prosper. Everyone wants a “fair work environment”, that protects the lazy and inept, and this further hurts our manufacturing, and its getting worse. Union meat packing muslims who won’t handle meat? Union carpenters suing because they have asthma and cant’ stand dust? It is insane.
I am in Chicago, and to further my disgust of unions, you should see the work of licensed chicago plumbers. You would gasp. McCormik Place is all union, but our firm does work there (we are non-union) because the union card holders cannot do the jobs. They are unqualified, and must outsource, but they make an easy 180k a year for sitting on their asses. I wouldn’t have one of these political cronies wash my car with water, much less design or operate a high pressure boiler system.
This has nothing to do with ‘free trade’ or protectionism. It has to do with government interference in the free market that made this nation great. Yes, level the playing field, get rid of the notion of “card-check” (other nations don’t have that crap) and get Uncle Sam out of my business. Then we can compete.
When it comes to government, less = more.
Sorry for the long rant.
BTW, I’m not anti-union. I’m anti thuggery. Take the thuggery out of unions, and I’m all for it. I’m anti-liberal, get the unions to stop supporting the libs, and I might support them. Get the unions out of government, and we might talk. Government employees should not in any way have the right to unionize. They work for the taxpayer.
