Mosque building owners nixed $18M offer before taking $4.8M one
NY Post ^ | September 5, 2010 | ISABEL VINCENT and MELISSA KLEIN

The original owners of the Ground Zero mosque site mysteriously spurned dozens of higher bids before selling the prime downtown real estate at a bargain-basement price.

The Pomerantz family, which had owned the building since the late 1960s and fielded offers after the patriarch died in 2006, rejected at least one bid that was nearly four times what prospective mosque builder Sharif El-Gamal eventually paid, The Post has learned.

El-Gamal did offer what could be viewed as a sweetener to his $4.8 million bid in July 2009 -- a job as a property manager for a son of the family, Sethian Pomerantz

New York developer Kevin Glodek was livid when he found out the building sold for a fraction of what he offered in 2007 -- $18 million cash -- and wondered whether money changed hands under the table, according to sources close to the deal.

Property tax dodge sounds logical...but why is Bloomberg so adamant about this location? And why would he overlook this financial irregularity? Unless he is in on the deal...

"(The GroundZero Mosque) cleared its final hurdle ….
developers plan to build the $100 million center which will include a mosque.
Since its incipient stages in July 2009, when a Muslim-run real-estate development
company purchased the damaged, vacant building and land where the new center
will be built, the project has sparked controversy and debate.
.... the tattered building that was bought by the Muslim real estate company had
been owned by a subsidiary of Bain Capital, a company Romney founded in 1984.

So it’s OK if his company can profit off the sale of the land ."

I was puzzled by that price, too, even in a down market. The name of Pomerantz’ widow, who was the final owner who sold for such a low price, is Kukiko Mitani. This sounds to me like a Japanese name, so she’s probably not a Muslim. In that case, there must be some other angle, perhaps, as suggested, a tax dodge of some kind.

All that needs happen is some enterprising AG dig around and see if the widow deposited cash somewhere at the time of the sale. Money hides,it never disappears(heard that on a t.v. show). That will give the apologists like Bloomberg And zero the cover they need to reverse course.

Names are irrelevant in islam.

Their names change w/o going through the normal format that civilized people use because our laws are superseded by islamic law.

Just a small point.

They do it all the time in foreign countries, put a low figure on the deeds price that is taxed and the rest gets bunged under the table.

That extra cash will have been bunged in some swiss bank account somewhere or in the caymans.

It smells to high heaven.
