Nonfarm payroll employment changed little (-54,000) in August, and the unemployment rate was about unchanged at 9.6 percent, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported today. Government employment fell, as 114,000 temporary workers hired for the decennial census completed their work. Private-sector payroll employment continued to trend up modestly (+67,000).
Household Survey Data
The number of unemployed persons (14.9 million) and the unemployment rate (9.6 percent) were little changed in August. From May through August, the jobless rate remained in the range of 9.5 to 9.7 percent. (See table A-1.)
Among the major worker groups, the unemployment rate for adult men (9.8 percent), adult women (8.0 percent), teenagers (26.3 percent), whites (8.7 percent), blacks (16.3 percent), and Hispanics (12.0 percent) showed little change in August. I expect the MSM to trumpet a huge drop in the unemployment rate report for Nov............ From 9.6% all the way down to 9.5%.
67,000 divided by the 50 states is 1,340 per state. Not impressive.
the word “unexpected” doesn’t appear here. Maybe the economists are slowly learning.
It doesn’t seem to match the reports for the weekly number of people applying for UI, which have been running at about a rate of 400k per month for the last two months. These people might be finding new work more quickly, but given the other economic numbers such as manufacturing, inventory and sales that show shrinkage, I have doubts about accuracy of this one.
I would bet on that one. Note source. Dept. of Labor. I doubt they would fudge the report for the election....
Team Obama will use every manipulation possible to keep it under 10% through the November election.
We have had millions more lose their jobs since it hit 10% in Oct-Nov-Dec 2009.
Astoundingly, it dropped to 9.7% by Jan 2010 and has managed to stay [aka, been manipulated to stay] in the mid-9% range this year, even with over 400,000 new weekly job loss claims.
Think you are right. Team obama and his media will skew the numbers or just make the numbers up in order to get a win in November. If with lose, the numbers will go way up becuase they will try to put the stink on Repubs. You know the drill. “American business are laying off more and more in anticipation of racist, bigoted, homophobic republican policies. If they win, and after the taxes increase, they will report that the unemployment numbers are going down because American businesses welcome higher taxes.
They are screwing around with these numbers. BIG TIME.
How has it been 9.5% for one straight year with net loss of jobs overall?
You need to create 200,000 per month just to keep afloat with the population. 300,000-400,000 to make a dent.
This is all bogus.
The MSM in the form of ABC radio news is already reporting it as “good news” because observers thought it would be much worse. They even quoted on person who said that he was “relieved” by the news and that stock futures were up.
Haven’t you noticed the trend? The day before reports come out, the media purposely predicts slightly worse than they really believe just to dampen the blow. Another Freeper once said something like, “oh good, it’s only a 2 ft hole in the hull, I was expecting a 3 ft hole” or something to that affect. People don’t buy it. 9.6% is worse than 9.5%, no matter how you sugarcoat it.
Cannot be true.
3073 counties and parrishes means we had a whopping 22 jobs per county. Whoohoo! You know it's bad for the Socialist Democrat party when liberal sycophant and self proclaimed political expert Larry Sabato claims the Dems are facing electoral Armageddon.
Just heard that PBHO is going to speak from the Rose Garden about the unemployment situation. May be up now.
apparently unemployment will not officially reach 10% ....
until the GOP takes back the House and Senate
I heard a news guy on CNN the other day talking about the “real” unemployment rate being at 16%. He said the official rate was 9.5%, I believe from last month, but that the “real” rate was higher. He just mentioned it as an afterthought in the segment he was reporting. It struck me that these news guys know something we don’t; i.e. that the official unemployment rate number reported in the MSM is artificially kept lower than the actual rate, based on how they do the calculation.
Or, is it an open secret that the “real” unemployment rate is well into double digits percentages, but officially, the administration is working hard to somehow keep the official number below the magic 10%????
lol
Unemployment goes up again, and how does Obama respond...
HE IS GOING ON ANOTHER VACATION, to camp david!!!
ROFL!!
Obama = Epic Fail
What a joke. Ive heard the unemployment rate described as unchanged when it remains the same but Ive never heard this type verbage. How many tenths does it have to jump to actually change?
Yup. In fact from July to August, the official unemployment rate ROSE from 9.5 to 9.6 percent. But they wont use the word "rose" or any synomym. It's like living in the Soviet Union and being fed a daily dose of informational garbage.
