LA MARQUE — A 56-year-old woman fended off an armed attacker in a Walmart parking lot in La Marque, pulled a pistol and put at least one hole in the assailant's fleeing vehicle, La Marque police said today.

The woman, whom police declined to name, struggled with a man trying to take her car shortly after 3 p.m. Wednesday, Detective Danielle Herman said in a written statement.

The woman, a concealed handgun permit holder, managed to grab a pistol from the car console and pointed it at the man, who fled to a silver or gray SUV driven by an accomplice, Herman said.

The woman fired several shots at the SUV as it sped away, at least one bullet striking the rear of the vehicle, she said.

Herman said the attacker was armed with a pistol.

Police are looking for an SUV with a bullet hole and Texas license plate number NMG 714.

Herman said the attacker was armed with a pistol.

That's what I'd say.

Wow. That old girl has presence of mind. Not only was she able to get to her weapon and use it, she even got the license plate number. Most impressive.

Or possibly NMG 914.

Or possibly NMG 794.

Or possibly NMG 719.

Never go to your car at Walmart without your gun at the ready.

Good thing it was Texas. Most states, even with a concealed carry permit if you shoot at the perp after they are getting away you would be the one arrested.

“managed to grab a pistol from the car console”

Don’t bet your life you’ll be within arm’s reach of your console when you need your sidearm.

Police are looking for an SUV with a bullet hole and Texas license plate number NMG 714.

And probably a fresh, brown stain in the driver's seat.

I hope the SUV driving bum gets put away for a long, long time!

If he tries it again, I hope the victim shoots to kill and retrieves the scum’s gun for evidence

My local Walmart. Lots of strip mall businesses on perimeter of parking lot, right next to I-45, and FM 2004. At least one round hit the SUV, where did rest end up? I know the lady was ticked off, and I have no sympathy for the perps, but collateral damage can land you in jail. Dang good thing it happened in Texas indeed. check out you tube

I enjoy reading stories like this.

It's a shame such things happen at all, but it's good to have a happy ending.

I hope that the local prosecutor isn’t a jerk, because she could be prosecuted. Once the attacker is running away, you’re supposed to stand down under most circumstances, not shoot repeatedly at the tailgate of their car - according to the deadly force laws in every state I know of.

Deadly force is justified when you are in reasonable immediate fear of great bodily harm or death. Once you see the tail lights speeding away from you, “reasonable fear” would be a hard sell.

Sounds like the perp threatened her with a firearm.

Put me on the jury...

Except in Texas.

Agreed. Even in Washington state, where you CAN shoot at someone that is fleeing if you believe that they continue to be a risk to others. I would have to look at the wording in the statute - but even though the thug will no doubt attack some other gal in the next few days, it probably says “immenent risk”. If the guy is still waving his gun around, ramming into cars, etc. . THEN you can shoot in an attempt to stop him. BUT - be sure to have a good attorney on your side.

Need a refresher on self-defense shooting rules in Texas.

Is victim going to have a problem firing on fleeing perp?
