The federal government has posted signs along a major interstate highway in Arizona, more than 100 miles north of the U.S.-Mexico border, warning travelers the area is unsafe because of drug and alien smugglers, and a local sheriff says Mexican drug cartels now control some parts of the state.
The signs were posted by the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) along a 60-mile stretch of Interstate 8 between Casa Grande and Gila Bend, a major east-west corridor linking Tucson and Phoenix with San Diego.
They warn travelers that they are entering an "active drug and human smuggling area" and they may encounter "armed criminals and smuggling vehicles traveling at high rates of speed." Beginning less than 50 miles south of Phoenix, the signs encourage travelers to "use public lands north of Interstate 8" and to call 911 if they "see suspicious activity."
Pinal County Sheriff Paul Babeu, whose county lies at the center of major drug and alien smuggling routes to Phoenix and cities east and west, attests to the violence. He said his deputies are outmanned and outgunned by drug traffickers in the rough-hewn desert stretches of his own county.
"Mexican drug cartels literally do control parts of Arizona," he said. "They literally have scouts on the high points in the mountains and in the hills and they literally control movement. They have radios, they have optics, they have night-vision goggles as good as anything law enforcement has.
"This is going on here in Arizona," he said. "This is 70 to 80 miles from the border - 30 miles from the fifth-largest city in the United States."
He said he asked the Obama administration for 3,000 National Guard soldiers to patrol the border, but what he got were 15 signs.

Agreed, and throw in both recon and armed drones, attack helicopters and a few A-10's and problem solved. Of course it won't happen but it makes for good thoughts.
Greay pic, see my post 22. :)
It sounds like we the people need to go camping and target shooting on those mountian tops.
That would work ... then spray the hell out of the place with their Gatling gun. That would discourage encroachment in a very big way.
"These signs are paid for by stimulus funds from "commander zero's" stash"
I traveled I-8 from Maricopa to Yuma last month, but not the portion between Gila Bend and Casa Grande. Casa Grande is a growing community, as is Maricopa.
I cannot understand why I haven’t heard anything about this from Corporate Media or local talk radio. I think this stretch of I-8 comes under Sharif Joe’s watch, but not sure what his jurisdiction/mandate is with regard to this situation.
Spray the hell out of every mountain top in sight!
Then they could put up signs:.....”Stay the hell away!...USAF at work!”....
Where do you think the inner city gangs get their product?
Amen to the -10

BINGO! We will never win a war we won't fight, and anyone who thinks this isn't a war is sadly misinformed.
Thanks AuntB. I’m just tired of watching some in our ranks take even the worst Democrat I’ve ever known to task on a subject, when we excuse our guys for doing almost the same exact things.
That’s not fair to some people on this forum, but it applies to many of them.
It makes sense to put those signs up! If all the illegals comming across the border just stopped it would get too crowded and more wouldn’t be able to come accross.
It’s like moving out of the baseball game. They tell you to keep moving so others can get out!!
See, they did know what they were doing after all!
The Governor asked BO for 3000 gaurd troops and they got thirty. They had more security than that for michele’s vacation.
Each and every one wants in state tuition too. They want to suck our economy dry.
Babeu campaigned for McCain and he expects something to change. What an idiot.
