The federal government has posted signs along a major interstate highway in Arizona, more than 100 miles north of the U.S.-Mexico border, warning travelers the area is unsafe because of drug and alien smugglers, and a local sheriff says Mexican drug cartels now control some parts of the state.
The signs were posted by the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) along a 60-mile stretch of Interstate 8 between Casa Grande and Gila Bend, a major east-west corridor linking Tucson and Phoenix with San Diego.
They warn travelers that they are entering an "active drug and human smuggling area" and they may encounter "armed criminals and smuggling vehicles traveling at high rates of speed." Beginning less than 50 miles south of Phoenix, the signs encourage travelers to "use public lands north of Interstate 8" and to call 911 if they "see suspicious activity."
Pinal County Sheriff Paul Babeu, whose county lies at the center of major drug and alien smuggling routes to Phoenix and cities east and west, attests to the violence. He said his deputies are outmanned and outgunned by drug traffickers in the rough-hewn desert stretches of his own county.
"Mexican drug cartels literally do control parts of Arizona," he said. "They literally have scouts on the high points in the mountains and in the hills and they literally control movement. They have radios, they have optics, they have night-vision goggles as good as anything law enforcement has.
"This is going on here in Arizona," he said. "This is 70 to 80 miles from the border - 30 miles from the fifth-largest city in the United States."
He said he asked the Obama administration for 3,000 National Guard soldiers to patrol the border, but what he got were 15 signs.

Shouldn’t these signs warn the illegals and smugglers of the Americans in a sane world??
Oh, but not to worry. Our fearless leader is sending a half dozen troops before he and his fashion challenged wife take their next vacation.
Yes, and signs should be posted along the actual border warning smugglers they will be shot.
...one of our family members is a tech rep in AZ and is on the road a lot...increased hiway danger has been going on for a long time before this official recognition.
The list, ping
Let me know if you would like to be on or off the ping list
Illegals like to hop the Southern Pacific trains that run along that stretch of I-8. I’ve seen them jump off near the Frito Lay plant.
But don't worry, Obie will no doubt take credit for the signs by posting a "Your Stimulus Dollars at Work" sign next to them. Then he'll claim that he saved and created a few jobs for the illegal immigrants who put both the signs up.
I’m not going to take Obama to task for this one bit, until our people realize that George Bush allowed this situation to deteriorate to the point that we are where we are today. This IS NOT Obama’s baby alone. He, Bush, and Clinton were the Three Men and a Baby.
We have allowed Mexico to take over part of the United States.
We. We did it. WE DID IT! Until we get that through our fat heads, nothing will change.
We have vast regions of our nation that are under foreign occupation. We have a massive number of squatters on our soil. Bush didn’t do a damned thing to change that. He allowed millions to pour in. He put a token force of National Guard troops down there to shuffle paper, and declared the problem fixed.
Well, I live next door to the San Fernando valley, and George, you’re an asshole. Obama, you’re an asshole too.
I am sick of this s—t, and I’m tired of our people ducking the fact that WE have been complicit in this mess. WE HAVE BEEN dammit.
And if we get a Republican in there in 2012, there’s a very good chance they will ignore it just like Bush did.
WE have already surrendered. On this subject, WE ARE SURRENDER MONKEYS.
I’m sure whatever hard working businesses in the area really appreciate the govt’s efforts
Didn't the "federal gumbt" just submit AZ to the UN for human rights violations??
This is a major stretch of highway in AZ located between Tuscan and Phoenix, just West of the City of Maricopa, not some out-of-the-way road!
This is totally unacceptable. If this is allowed to stand, citizens will be forced to take up arms or give up their homes and life in AZ.
I am in total schock! Corporate Media has totally ignored this situation, as well as, local talk radio!
Outrageous. Yet, the “President” can’t find the time to visit the bloody border or to meet personally with the Governor of Texas (sends an aide, instead).
You make good points but Bush is gone, has been for over a year and a half. Obama is there now and his Justice Dept is suing Arizona because they want to protect themselves.
Screw Obama, he’s the one running the show now!
Hey anyone in Arizona, I'll bet the lookouts are using the old mines to live in and hide out.
This is an outrage. We need regime change this November.
Yep, I traveled I-8 fairly often some years back, it was pretty desolate then but I imagine it’s more populated now. Like you say, it’s a major hiway now and was many years ago.
At some point you might find armed Americans going down to send intruders the other way.
I’m kind of surprised the inner city gangs haven’t armed up to go defend their drug trade yet as well.
This has gone way beyond a law enforcement problem, and it has been this way for years. The cartels have what amounts to a company sized infantry force in this area. The Border Patrol and local law enforcement do not have the equipment or the training to deal with this threat. Local SWAT units cannot do it either, as they are trained for dynamic entry and CQB. No, this problem has become a military issue. It will take the Govt sacking up and putting infantry units on the ground to fix this mess. My wet dream would be to have a platoon each of Marine Recon, SEALs, Rangers, and Delta. Give these guys free reign and turn em’ loose.
“He said he asked the Obama administration for 3,000 National Guard soldiers to patrol the border, but what he got were 15 signs.”.....
Obama’s gonna get a sign!....In November!
