And this is the Left that is opposed to "reactionaries who want to go back to the Middle Ages?"
Oh wait. They're for "gay marriage." I guess that keeps them from being reactionaries.

Europe estimates the switch will save as much energy as Romania consumes in an average year and remove around 15 million tons of harmful emissions from the atmosphere. And guaranteed employment for companies that specialize in hazmat cleanup of mercury from broken CFL bulbs.

Incandescents are being made illegal here as well, right?

The European Parliament said compact fluorescent, halogen, light-emitting diode or "improved incandescent" light bulbs will replace the conventional light bulb in the European Union. I've replaced many of my day-to-day bulbs with halogens in a regular bulb mount. I love, love, love them. They're more expensive than regular bulbs (maybe $3 a bulb), but they have the advantages of regular incandescent bulbs (instant on, no flickering, can be dimmed) along with a whiter light. Their only real problem is that they seem to be hotter, so you have to be more careful about cheap lamp.
I just hope US laws don't outlaw them.

Violent protesters will start throwing those mercury-laced florescent bulbs at riots. Then the govt will have to mount full-scale hazmat cleanups at the cost of millions of taxpayer dollars.
We need to rescind our laws banning the incandescent lightbulbs after November.

Heck, it's becoming increasingly difficult to find 100W bulbs here in the United States, nevermind overseas!
Yet another area where President 0bama wishes to interfere with everyday life.

The new fluorescent bulbs are hideous, don’t give much light and if broken are poisonous.
Someones making a killing on the new bulbs.

this is about money.
there are no royalties for a regular light bulb. They are cheep to make.
Profits margins are too low.
BUT philips and GE make big bucks because they own the patents for their “new” lights. More expensive, royalties paid.
follow the money.

So what if CFLs are more energy efficient? I deserve the liberty to use whatever bulb I want, because I pay for the energy. I could even be using so-called green energy from my own solar panels to power my lighting, but the statists don’t care. If they can regulate this, then they can regulate everything.
I actually prefer CFLs, but there are some places where I use incandescent. The concept that incandescent bulbs are bad because they waste energy as heat is actually one of their advantages for certain applications. Incandescent bulbs also give off a distinctly different color of light, and they come on much faster in cold environments.
The statists would fight to the death to protect choice when it comes to sodomy or abortion, but they’ll deny us a lousy 100W bulb. And they wonder why some of us DETEST them!
To: markomalley
I can only hope that the white LED lights become commercially viable before our ban goes into place.
I love CFLs for their uses, but there are places where you need something better.

they are doing that demographically though, so nevermind.
