Republican Sen. Orrin Hatch of Utah has come out strongly in support of the controversial Islamic center proposed for construction in New York, even as his party appears to be using opposition to the so-called "Ground Zero mosque" as a campaign issue.
In an interview over the weekend with Fox 13 News in Salt Lake City, Hatch noted that "there's a huge . . . lack of support throughout the country for Islam to build that mosque there, but that should not make a difference if they decide to do it."
"I'd be the first to stand up for their rights," said Hatch, a Mormon and longtime supporter of religious freedom who was behind legislation passed in 2000, known as the Religious Land Use and Institutionalized Persons Act (RLUIPA), which aims to protect houses of worship from undue burdens and discrimination from local zoning statutes and other laws.

WTF????!!!!
“Republican Sen. Orrin Hatch of Utah has come out strongly in support of the controversial Islamic center proposed for construction in New York, even as his party appears to be using opposition to the so-called “Ground Zero mosque” as a campaign issue.”
Flush the Grand Old Potty. Vote Conservative.
He’ll get a Bennett next time
Any mention of the church that was destroyed and his support for rebuilding it? UTAH voters, remember this.
Dump this pencil-necked geek!
what do you expect from someone whose middle name is “Booby?”
I think all he is saying is that he supports their right to build it there, not necessarily the fact that they are building it there. There is a difference.
There are a number of us in Utah that are looking forward to making sure that happens.
Never really thought he was down for the conservative struggle. Too comfortable in his DC power and prestige and the need to appease the appartchiks of the MSM....screw him....his home state should shelve him, pronto.
The article adequately explains his rationale. Nevertheless, I disagree with him.
Hatch needs to go home to Utah!!
Keep it up you faux “repubican” d!ckheads, make yourselves known now,so we can flush all your disgusting sorry a$$es down the $hitter come November....
Nothing in DC surprises me anymore. The career politicians of the Republicrat parties finally see their goal in sight—a reformat of the United States that finally does away with that pesky “individual freedom” thing. They want a nation of scared and impoverished slaves who have no choice but to do what they tell us to do.
They do have the right to build it there, but that doesn’t mean they should. We The People have the right to register our objections.
If I lived in Utah, that’s what I’d do.
He’s up for re-election in 2012, he should be smarter than this.
And I agree with you 110%
