The Justice Department filed another lawsuit against immigration practices by Arizona authorities, saying Monday that a network of community colleges acted illegally in requiring noncitizens to provide their green cards before they could be hired for jobs.
The suit against the Phoenix area Maricopa Community Colleges was filed less than two months after the Justice Department sued Arizona and Gov. Jan Brewer (R) over the state's new immigration law. It also comes as the department is investigating Joe Arpaio, the sheriff in Maricopa County, who is known for tough immigration enforcement.
In Monday's lawsuit, Justice officials said the colleges discriminated against nearly 250 noncitizen job applicants by mandating that they fill out more documents than required by law to prove their eligibility to work. That violated the federal Immigration and Nationality Act, the department said.
The law's anti-discrimination provision "makes it unlawful to treat authorized workers differently during the hiring process based on their citizenship status," said Thomas E. Perez, assistant attorney general for Justice's Civil Rights Division. He said the government "is acting now to remedy this pattern or practice of discrimination."

As a practical matter, how did the US AG know of this if not brought to their attention by an illegal job seeker? From a simple minded guy like me, why would the US AG sue a State over implementing correctly the current US Statutes concerning illegal alien employment? I be very confused.

I believe it is called producing a “work visa” that allows you to work legally in the US, and the “work visa” has to stipulate what kind of work they are allowed to do.

The form I-9 is the legal standard for determining citizenship and the threshold can be met with a drivers license and SS#. Technically, a green card is not required, although you are correct in that a federal agent can ask an illegal for their green card at any time.
That said, who is the plaintiff in this case? Whose rights are the US defending here? ...an illegal.
That's it??? I attest to my immigration status and here's a Social Security card? That is all that one is allowed to ask when hiring someone who self-identifies as a foreign national? [I'll assume this is the I-9 form] You can't ask for actual proof that your status is what you say it is? That you are eligible to work and your status doesn't run out next week or something?
The laws connected to form I-9 require that ANY employer make sure that the prospective employee is qualified & legal to work in the USA. I have filled out a number of them, & verified many of them.
That was long before E-Verify was available.
The Feds are stepping on sensitive body parts in trying to take on any employer over this issue.
I think you can find the I-9 form online. I have the form, but do now have scanning ability.

Also, can’t Arizona file suit against the Fed’s for the monies the state has to pay and loses because the Fed’s refuse to do their job and restrict entry over the boarder to illegals? How about a federal law suit from the citizens of Arizona who have been victims of crime from illegals?
Will Obama’s administration also be asking thhe U.N. to investigate this for HUMAN RIGHT VIOLATIONS?
