Now that irresponsible opportunists have brought many of the misled to Washington, we can begin to contemplate what makes bigotry so appealing. Surely, being able to exclude is one of the great joys of the species because it can give a grand identity to the average person.
That identity as one of the elect made the red glow in Southern white necks. They felt part of a civilization in which they were looked down upon until they put on their costumes, screamed loudly at mob gatherings and committed acts of violence.
While bigotry is as American as apple pie, its shelf life is now rather short. The easily dismissed lies that Glenn Beck, Sarah Palin and Newt Gingrich have used to fire up the true believers will not work. After race-baiting as clearly as they could on the issue of a proposed Islamic center near Ground Zero, all of them have attempted to "clarify" what they actually meant.
The reason that opportunists from the right have had to tread carefully is that nobody today desires to be called a racist. And so they've reframed their Islamophobia as an issue of constitutional rights. This is a variation on the purportedly genteel Southern racists who claimed that the real issue during the civil rights movement was not ethnic exclusion, but the rights of states.

He looked calm for once in his life. I was even able to tolerate him because usually I want to throw stuff at the TV when I see his annoying face, but tonight, WOW, either he knows it’s over for the Dems or he was heavily sedated
There are a whole lot more than half a million who are making that observation.
He even admitted the liberals made a mistake with social programs, and said something had to be done about the massive government dependency problem! I couldn't believe my ears. My husband said "What did he just say?" I backed it up and listened to it three times. Yep. That's what he said.
Smearing people you don't like as bigots and racists is no longer an automatic win.
Exactly where to these bottom-feeding scumsuckers like Crouch come from? Are they natural born or they rejected suppositories?
Interesting theory.
In my family, two of us brothers are conservative/Republican. The other two are progressive/Democrat.
I quit using street drugs at 18, and my Republican brother never used drugs.
Guess which two still regularly partake?
This article cracks me up. The title alone tells me how afraid and desperate the left is becoming.
The author is afraid.
He is worried that people are waking up to reclaim their soul. That is exactly what Beck’s rally was about.
Restoring Honor. Restoring the American soul.
This moron is worried because it is the left-wing that tries to steal souls for their cause. It is the progressive movement that preaches giving up your soul for their perverted cause of anti-Life, anti-God, anti-America and anti-morality.
Conservatism preaches that the individual soul is to be cherished and protected. Life is to be cherished and protected. Morality and the Will of the People is to be cherished and protected.
The left-wing is worried that Natural law may once again triumph over their perverted and corrupt dictate against it.
Stanley Crouch=Ignant Poverty Pimp
'exclude"?
Was there one person in all of America that was told they couldn't come?
Seems like, over the years, there have been a lot "black" marches - name one that was a 'white march."
If anyone was "excluded," it was by self exclusion.
Crouch was fired from JazzTimes following his controversial article Putting the White Man in Charge,[1] in which he asserted that white critics elevate white jazz musicians beyond their abilities.
Mr. Crouch MUST be totally kidding about this. During the height of popularity of jazz in the first half of the 20th Century, two names are always mentioned as the most famous of jazz musicians: Duke Ellington and Louis Armstrong. No white jazz musician in those days came close to being associated with jazz music as these two I mentioned.
Southerners are ALWAYS prey to these “elite”, “tolerant”, “people-loving” crowd.....
Southerners, to them, are ALWAYS stupid, talk funny, sleep with their cousins, have red-necks, and are, by huge numbers-—Christian——ANOTHER trait the left abhors! (we know how to shoot, too! eeeghad!!!!)
BUT, the liberals “preach” inclusiveness and tolerance....
They never see their own hypocrisy.
Stanley Crouch. “Crouching Liberal. Hidden Fascist.”
This is an unfortunate, very stupid column by a person, Crouch, who used to write columns that made sense. Clearly Crouch doesn’t have a clue about sixty percent of his fellow Americans. I thought he was smarter than this, but I’m sorry I’m wrong.
Stanley Crotch....
“Cant we just declare war on them, and get it over with?”
I believe the 25% you mention are the results of the destruction of the State Institutions back in the fifties and sixties, and inbreeding.
“Cant we just declare war on them, and get it over with?”
No need to. They’ll declare war on and come after you sooner or later. They always do. They’re evil and violent. When they do...BANG!
Very disappointed in Stanley Crouch. He and I are pretty much the last people who don’t see “negro” as a bad word.
Sorry to find out he is still so blind and will not SEE.
These guys at the Glenn Beck rally seem to have figured that out all by themselves:
Interestingly, when asked, they claimed to be Obama supporters. Go figure!
After race-baiting as clearly as they could on the issue of a proposed Islamic center near Ground Zero, all of them have attempted to “clarify” what they actually meant.
Sorry Stanley, the only one backtracking is the president.
Sounds to me like he’s just a bitter racist old fool who jumps on the “hey, look at me” bandwagon to bitch and moan, knowing it will get him his much-craved publicity
