Glenn Beck Rewrites Civil Rights History [Alveda King: Park Police Forewarned, We Just Might Sing]
CNN>COM ^ | August 26, 2010 9:02 a.m. EDT | Willie Bunch, Special to CNN

Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (CNN) -- "We are on the right side of history! We are on the side of individual freedoms and liberties and, dammit, we will reclaim the civil rights moment. We will take that movement -- because we were the people who did it in the first place." -- Glenn Beck, on his nationally syndicated radio program, May 26.

It is Glenn Beck's most audacious stunt yet: This Saturday, in the company of former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, the National Rifle Association and others, the Fox News Channel host will stand in the sacred shadow not just of the Lincoln Memorial, but of the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. himself, near the spot where King delivered his "I Have a Dream" speech 47 years earlier to the exact day.

During this event -- billed as "Restoring Honor" -- Beck will aim to "reclaim the civil rights moment" for his cause, and in the process he will continue what he's been doing for the last 18 months: bending the history of 20th-century America like a Philadelphia soft pretzel.

The revisionist message behind "Restoring Honor" is nothing new for the conservative shock jock. In the year and half since President Obama took office, Beck has led his loyal followers on a journey not just to "reclaim" civil rights but much more audaciously to rewrite the sweeping narrative arc of American history from the time of the Founding Fathers forward.

Beck is preaching spiritual and religious renewal while promoting and teaching our Founding documents.

Thank you, Sam, and very well stated! Catholicism has all of the warts and faults out in the open as well. Episcopalians have/had gays in their clergy. The list could go on, but I digress.

This is truly a cultural war, and if we are sitting here quibbling over how someone worships, we have got a very long way to go to win the internal battle. No one will EVER agree on one faith over the other for the purpose of political expediency.

Ah yes, because the word “Restoration” could not be in reference to anything else, right? As a professional writer, I’m quite annoyed by the parsing of one word out of thousands spoken by Beck on our country.

Let me ask you, Nana, if Beck was a Baptist or an Evangelical, would you listen to his message about the state of our country, or are you always hiding behind a veil of “Christianity” in reference to interpersonal relations? Do you not associate with Mormons on a daily basis?

What did you miss? You miss the fact that the Beck critics and the hamasque supporters all hate America. Each and every one of them.

(I know, your question was rhetorical. You really didn’t “miss” it. But I just like to repeat the obvious.)

Started reading this thread at around 9:10 AM.

And I hoped (and posted) that it wouldn't turn into a “I hate Beck and all Mormons” thread.

But here I am, reading the same stuff that gets posted, ad nauseum, on practically every thread related to Beck.

It makes me sad, and it makes me sick, to see what FreeRepublic has turned into.

This thread is officially hijacked, as so many have been allowed to be. With the willing oversight of the Mods.

Sad to see FreeRepublic religious zealots allowed to run amok over any thread they want.

So here I am. Attack me too. I will not respond to any of you. And feel free to ban or suspend me. I would consider it a badge of honor.

To what are you referring specifically, Nana? Spirituality and Religion are generic terms. They don’t refer to one religion over another. I mentioned nothing about the exclusion of religions at his rally. What are you on about?

Would you care to chime in on this, airborne, or were you trying to get me zotted? I’m on Beck’s side here. I don’t see this as a religious issue, personally.

I’d heard the usual drivel on GMA earlier. That was after the latest edition of the Katrina-Love-Fest.

I included the Lead Moderator in my post specifically so he/she would read my objection to the hijacking of this thread.

Sorry for any alarm! 8^)

Not a problem, FRiend! I disdain the downward spiral of religious conversations on FR, and I agree that this rally has nothing to do with Beck’s religion. This rally is about America and the need to take it back with the same spiritual/religious zeal that it was founded upon.

We’re going to the rally. This rally honors America, our Military, and our Constitution.

I envy you!

God bless and protect you, and may He see that it is a peaceful celebration, and the beginning of REAL CHANGE IN AMERICA!

America needs to return to it's Constitutional principles.

Freedom, Liberty and Common Sense!

Nice speech, however I made no comment on Beck or his politics. You made a statement that you lump Mormonism in with the same Christianity as your own Catholic faith. I showed you that your own Church does not agree with you.

Perhaps you made that statement out of ignorance of the LDS, something that is common among today's Christians, or perhaps you are another of those Modern American Oprah “all paths are valid” Christians who will do anything to not offend even the enemies of Christ himself, I do not know.

As far as politics beck is often correct if not some times a little over the top.

But as a General rule don't think the LDS will not forgo their own interest in the name of Conservatism. Remember they pushed Romney as the Conservative messiah despite the evidence to the contrary.

You accuse people of eating their own. Perhaps, perhaps not, but on the final day of our Earthly life labels such as Republican or Democrat, Conservative or liberal will matter little. What you did and how you stood for Christ, well that is the question that transcends nations and politics.

That we as a nation have become so weak kneed in our defense of Christianity, that we have confused tolerance with equity, goes a long way in answering the very problems you seek redress for through your political efforts.

The spiritual war that rages above also rages here.

If you’re completely blinded by his religious affiliation, you’re totally missing the point of his mission: to teach America’s greatness through spirituality!

OK, so you are one of those "Many Paths, One God" sort of people. That explains why you appear offended when true believers refuse to reject our LORD and His teachings in order to embrace a heretic and blasphemer just because Beck's goals appear to be noble to the spiritually ignorant.

No one here is trying to stop Beck. Unless he repents of his Mormonism and accepts the true LORD, he is destined for eternal Damnation. So while the ignorant and naive follow this spiritual Pied Piper in a futile effort to appease God in ways that are offensive to Him in order to somehow merit His good graces, allow the rest of us to call our brothers and sisters back from this apostasy.

I hope they have a great time, but make no mistake, God does not hear the prayers of the unregenerate, and views all "good" works done outside of His will to be offensive and as dirty rags.

I know about 30 people who are going to this Rally. Not one is a Mormon.

Who gives a shit?

This is about taking back America, honoring our Military, and respecting our Constitution.

I am absolutely NOT one of the many paths/one God people. I am firmly entrenched in my Catholic beliefs, and I am quite defensive of the tenets of my religion. I’ve had numerous spirited if not outright combative conversations with people of other faiths, and we simply agree to disagree.

I don’t use religion as a buttress to my arguments simply because it is so varied and contentious. That being said, this thread should not have degraded into religion, and my belief that Beck is as much as a Christian as you still stands in my mind.

You could preach your doctrine to me all day, but I will still differ with you on many points just like I’m sure Beck would differ with both of us if put up to some religious standard.
