Rev. Jesse Jackson says Michigan needs to get over its anti-Detroit sentiment

GRAND RAPIDS -- The Rev. Jesse Jackson had a word for West Michigan: There is an anti-Detroit sentiment in the state, but Detroit is "the largest organ in Michigan's body. ... If Detroit suffers, Michigan suffers."
That was just one of the points Jackson made as he gave a pep talk in Grand Rapids Wednesday as part of Rainbow PUSH's campaign "Rebuild America: Jobs Justice Peace."
During his speech at New Life Church of God in Christ on Jefferson Avenue SE, he urged parents to concentrate on education.
"Take your child to school. That means you have to get up early ... Meet your child's teacher. Teachers teach differently when they know the parents," he said.
The longtime civil rights leader is in the middle of a week-long statewide tour that will culminate with a march in Detroit on Saturday.
In Grand Rapids, Jackson had a packed house shout his words back: "Turn off the TV ... Pick up your child's report card ... Take your child to worship on weekends."
His speech was full of chants, shouts, preaching and prayer as he emphasized the need for a level playing field to end unemployment.
Jackson complained the federal government bailed out banks that profited from foreclosures but will not forgive student loan debt that keeps families from buying cars and houses.
He said the U.S. is fighting wars but has not built the roads, schools, houses and hospitals Americans need.
He said there is better representation than ever in government, with racial and political diversity, but the country tries to compete with "slave labor" in other countries.
"What we see in every city is plants closing, jobs leaving and drugs and guns coming," he said, later adding the "flow of guns" has to stop to end violence.
He said the nation must ensure that jobs and job training are available for everyone.
"It's not about black and white, it's about dark and light," he said. "Turn the lights back on for the American worker."
To create jobs, Jackson is seeking targeted stimulus, re-industrialization and trade policy that supports manufacturing in the U.S.
And for the record, Jackson, 68, said he is not seeking another run for the presidency, as he did in 1984 and 1988.
"We have a good president, and I'm proud of him," he said, adding that the country didn't get into the "hole" of unemployment overnight and it needs time to get out. "But I think we are moving the right direction."
