MEXICO CITY (AP) — Mexican marines found the dumped bodies of 72 people at a rural location in northern Mexico following a shootout with suspected drug cartel gunmen that left one marine and three suspects dead, the Navy reported late Tuesday.

The cadavers of 58 men and 14 women were found at a spot near the Gulf coast south of the border city of Matamoros. It appears to be the largest drug-cartel body dumping ground found in Mexico since President Felipe Calderon launched an offensive against drug trafficking in late 2006.

"The federal government categorically condemns the barbarous acts committed by criminal organizations," The Navy said in a statement. "Society as a whole should condemn these type of acts, which illustrate the absolute necessity to continue fighting crime with all rigor."

Martial law time.. go mansion to mansion where the cartel lives.. you’ll recognize them as you fly over, watch out for shots and stingers... take no prisoners.. they shoot at you, they die.

The border is a war zone. They better start treating it as such or a heckuva lot more innocents will die..

Seems like it would knock the cartels for a loop, and free up law enforcement to crack down on meth and coke.

I am not sure what the effect would be. They are already responsible for a large percentage of the domestic outdoor grow operations in the western US.

What would the point be for having those grow operations if people could just legally grow their own? The cartels would have no customers.

I favor legalization but lets stick to logical arguments. You can brew your own beer, ferment your own wine or grow your own tobacco but almost no one does because it is not that easy to do it right. Pot will be no different. But I agree that legalization will significantly cut their profits but it will not make all the problems suddenly go away.

You are comparing boiling an egg to making an omelet. You do know that. Don't you?

No, he's comparing making eggs for breakfast to picking up an egg McMuffin. Most people would rather buy something that someone else made than make it themselves (if the price is reasonable). There is an "economy of scale" that says it will be far cheaper (and more convenient) for one person to grow a lot and sell it than lots of people growing a little.

So the cartels, who already have large plots dedicated to growing the stuff, would continue to dominate the market. The average user would be perfectly happy to continue to buy rather than go through the trouble of growing his own (it's not like the first word that comes to mind when I think "pot smoker" is "industriousness")...

Sure you can grow ditch weed in your back yard but if you want quality bud you have to get into hydroponics and other advanced cultivation techniques. Few will bother if you can purchase it at the local stop and rob.

That may be true but the bottom line and the point to my posts is that if growing were legal, the cartels would be out of the pot growing/smuggling business. Lots of retirees out there with 'green thumbs'.

Coke would be enough to fuel the narcoistas, I think. We’d have to legalize coke too. And we should. That and opium.

There’s no legitimate Federal authority for the Federal drug laws.

Misrepresentation is a form of lying. That Mexico allows some consumer items our US Federales ban — specifically only small amounts of marijuan, for larger amounts are still illegal in Mexico — misrepresents why this violence is happening.

Underground money fuels this violence. Big underground money arising out of the smuggling of highly desirable consumer goods that are banned in the US.

Lying is not friendly, fwtw.

I'm yelling for sanity and respect for others. I trust others to make their own decisions as full adults. We have to do that our as a culture we are immature.

Yes, there are standards of behavior -- one can't tolerate public intoxication or semi-intoxication of those operating dangerous equipment. Nor can a society ignore the dangers of addictive drugs in times and places a culture is more prone to addiction.

All drugs should be legal, some regulated to create a modest barrier to use -- as we do today with tobacco and alcohol, or drugs that require purchase at a pharmacy with the transfer professional hand to adult hand. Only a few should be extremely restricted for and only for extreme danger to the public -- and that depends on time and place.

In a truly free nation NO item should be wholly banned for any properly responsible adult can take upon himself or herself the duty to hold and use a thing wisely, and indeed at some time and place he or she may have to so use it for some great meritorious purpose.

Do you thing Our G0d placed ANYTHING on this Earth so is so dangerous that no man might somehow use it for the good.

No! Everything has its purpose, therefore let people be able to possess and investigate uses and learn and discover proper uses. Why hobble humanity?

Because there's money in it. Take away the money, leaving heavy penalties for quantity production and they'll quit. I'll go out on a limb and say that a majority of Oregon's legal growers disobey the law and sell illegally. Because marijuana sells at high prices, regardless of how it's produced. Risk/reward.

Agreed. But that camel's nose is waaay under the tent and things are gonna have to get worse...and they can...for most folks to tolerate legalization of white dope.
