What would the point be for having those grow operations if people could just legally grow their own? The cartels would have no customers.

I favor legalization but lets stick to logical arguments. You can brew your own beer, ferment your own wine or grow your own tobacco but almost no one does because it is not that easy to do it right. Pot will be no different. But I agree that legalization will significantly cut their profits but it will not make all the problems suddenly go away.
