NYT: Lessons for President Obama, and No Mulligans (OOPS! Except out of bunkers)
NYTimes ^ | August 22, 2010 | BILL PENNINGTON

EXCERPT

(Gene Mulak, the golf pro at the Vineyard Golf Club on Martha’s Vineyard) later watched Obama play three holes. What did he think of the first golfer’s game?

“He’s a trouper, that’s what he is,” Mulak said. “He accepts that it’s a hard game. We had another president — I’m not naming names — who liked to play a lot of mulligans.”

A mulligan is a term for a do-over golf shot, one meant to replace a poor shot. Former President Bill Clinton vacationed on Martha’s Vineyard and was known for frequently using do-over shots — they became known as “Billigans.”

Mulak said: “When President Obama hit his ball into the junk out here, he went and found it and hit it again. He did that wherever his ball ended up. You have to respect him for that.”

President Obama takes a mulligan after failing to hit the ball out of a bunker on the 12th hole.

Perhaps the Leader of the Free World is a little sensitive about his game. Because our spies report that Barry was hacking away at a ball in the bunker on the 12th hole - a la Judge Elihu Smails - before giving up and throwing it onto the green. Shades of Bill Clinton!

That’s just great - “a real trooper” huh? Now come November, the country is taking a mulligan on the last election.

With the president, I had nothing to lose. He was already at the bottom of the bunker-playing world.

The bunker-playing world isn't the only world Bronco Bomber is at the bottom of ... the competence-world is at the top of the list - followed closely by the patriot-world

Golf, perhaps more than any other game, reveals the character of the player. Does he move his ball in the rough? Does he count all his shots? Does he show proper etiquette and respect for his playing partners and others on the course? One soon learns a man's true character by playing a round of golf with him.

Of course, with Obama, there's really no need to observe his golf ettiquette. We all pretty much know his character.

I used to say I could tell the character of a man by the way he played “putt-putt”. (I can’t play golf) *chuckle* I was right.... :)

“Golf, perhaps more than any other game, reveals the character of the player. “

You beat me to it.

People joke about all the deals done on golf courses, there’s a reason. Relaxed environment where you can get the true measure of a man or woman. Foot wedge, mulligans, shaving strokes... it tells you a lot about a person.

From what they say about Obama’s game, it tells me he’s a weak character, prone to give up when it gets too rough. As another poster said, it confirms what we know about him.

Yep. It also reveals ego and propensity to self-delude. It's particularly telling in a game where the outcome doesn't matter. There are no prizes, no gift certificates at the clubhouse. Not even a round of drinks at stake.

Clinton and Obama's willingness to bend rules is about redefining success and failure for the sole purpose of how it makes them feeeeel. Normal, honest people would feel worse, not better.
