Introduced by a Democratic state representative at a gathering of hundreds of senior citizens at a condo complex in heavily Democratic Broward County on Wednesday, Florida governor and U.S. Senate candidate Charlie Crist thanked God that he was no longer a Republican.
"You know, I used to be a Republican," Crist told the adoring crowd after an introduction by Democratic state Rep. Ari Porth . When a women in the audience yelled out, "Thank God!" Crist immediately said, "Yeah, thank God. Right - used to be!"
The statement came the same day Washington Examiner columnist Timothy P. Carney revealed that former senator and Republican presidential nominee Bob Dole contributed $1,000 to Crist's Senate campaign against GOP nominee Marco Rubio. Carney provided the Federal Election Commission record documenting Dole's cash donation.
During Bill Clinton's first term as president, Dole as Senate minority leader was instrumental in stopping HillaryCare from becoming law. But after retiring from the Senate, the Kansan became a highly-paid Washington lobbyist with the law firm of Alston & Bird, which counts the National Association for Home Care and Hospice as a client.
Last fall, Dole backed the Democrats' big government healthcare reform legislative efforts, which became law in the spring.
Addressing the seniors, Gov. Crist lived up to a big-spender reputation that was buttressed by his eager acceptance of President Obama's stimulus money last year by promising the status quo on the fiscally-troubled Social Security system. Crist wowed the crowd by saying, "I'm the only candidate in the race who says he will protect Social Security forever."

Don’t forget Arnold.
“I think he is going to regret those words.”
I sure hope you’re right. I’m embarrassed to admit I voted for this chucklehead when he ran for governor. All I want for him now is to be kicked out of office for good.
Indeed. Refuses to refund money donated by good Republicans in good faith. Refunds $9600 to indicted buddy Jim Greer at Greer's request.
Ah, yes. Actually, Arnold was a great candidate. He ran an awesome campaign and won in a landslide.
(Of course, you gotta ignore the fact he was a lying scheming Austrian socialist Trojan Horse).
As to Dole & McCain - I should have said the worst Presidential candidates of all time.
Thank goodness the "Arnold for President" campaign has finally died.
I thought he said he was President of California.
God agrees.
Good for Rubio. Any recent polls?
So do I.
“Ol’ Charlie just keeps on digging...”
True, but is it because he has not yet ‘reached his own level’ or because he has not yet ‘found his groove’?
In closing, why did the funeral home give Charlie Crist such a discounted prepaid funeral price?
Answer: ‘Cause it is lots cheaper to just screw the crooked thing into the ground than dig a grave for one of them.
The snake in the garden of Eden had more scruples than Crist.
Well,at least somebody got their money back. Hopefully Rubio will hammer Crist non-stop about this in the weeks leading up to the election.
At that time there were 1800 people a month moving to Florida.
Construction was booming with crews working 7 days a week building new houses, malls and office parks.
Homes were selling for top dollar.
Unemployment was under 5%.
Now Crist wants a promotion and a pay raise to be Senator.
And....just what has Charlie accomplished?
Nobody is moving to Florida.
The only construction are road projects and other government projects where payrolls must be certified and rules and regulations make it onerous for companies to do business.
Most construction companies have just folded and ceased to exist.
Homes sales are a joke.
Home values are less than half of what people bought them for when Crist was sworn in.
Education continues to be a black hole from which no money escapes and more importantly nobody learns a damn thing and teachers' unions are the only things that thrive. Even the addition of another (it's good for education) lottery, Powerball, hasn't made any difference.
And Crist's thanks God he left the Republican Party?
Hey Charlie, WE thank God you left the Republican Party.
