In 1969, John Wayne played Rooster Cogburn in "True Grit" -- a grizzled, drunken U.S. Marshal hired by a 14-year-old girl to track down her father's killer. The role ended up winning the aging Western star his first and only Oscar, prompting him to make a rare sequel -- "Rooster Cogburn" -- opposite Katherine Hepburn in 1975. The image of Wayne's craggy, eye-patched visage from "True Grit" has become a cinematic icon.
So film mavens everywhere were taken aback when it was announced last year that Joel and Ethan Coen would been making their own version of "True Grit." But don't expect a straight remake; this movie is based more closely on the Charles Portis novel. And Jeff Bridges, fresh off his Oscar win, was tapped to play Cogburn; that's right, the Duke has been replaced by the Dude.

Wow - that’s too bad. I actually liked the Bridges clan. “Liked” being the key word.
Expect lots of blood.
Expect lots of suck.

“Jeff Bridges: Barack Obama is my champion”
LOL! Jeff Bridges suckles on the Imam’s teet like some of the idiots posting here. LOL!
I hope the Cohn’s don't screw it up again.
“Im a fan of Wayne, but the original True Grit just wasnt one of my favorite of his films. Kim Darby was too old for the part she played, and Glenn Campbell was sorta eh, IMHO. It wasnt a bad flick, I just think the Duke did far better work in his career - The Shootist, for example.”
True true. The affected language was a turnoff too.
I just finished watching Disk 2 of 4 old JW westerns from the 30’s. 25 total in the set. Corny and lousy acting.
I always say JW never made a good movie and he nver made a bad one.
I have DVD’ed about 30 others of his best and as more come along, I will DVD them.
No question about it.
And while we’re on the subject, I happened on this the other day: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0EUP9rOLf30
>>Wouldnt it be neat if TCM and AMC and every channel that plays movies could saturate the airwaves with True Grit and Rooster Cogburn the week before this travesty is released to theaters??<<
They have done it in the past. Even the cute, yet iconic, original Karate Kid movie seemed to be all over the place on cable before they released the crappy remake.
Good point! Was there a clamoring for this film to be remade? Not that I know of. Why? The film IS John Wayne and that cannot be replicated!
An obvious question suggests itself here...
I’m inclined to think that this will go over like the remake of ‘Miracle on 34th Street’. or the remake of ‘The Parent Trap’ that they constantly show instead of the truly good classics. Mostly the same shows, but devoid of any human spirit....soulless even.
I didn’t say this film would be any better but that True Grit is not one of the great films that Wayne appeared in. And he appeared in quite a few great films.
Nobody can play Rooster Cogburn except John Wayne, the same way nobody could ever play Queeg or Rick except Bogart.
A little off subject, but I was up in Bath Iron Works in Maine, and got a chance to go on a tour.
They told about the launching of the USS Oliver Hazard Perry, the lead ship in the class. They broke the bottle to christen her, but instead of sliding down the ways...she just sat there, motionless. Apparently, down below, the shipyard workers were furiously doing something, but it wasn’t moving.
John Wayne was a guest up on the platform, and when things began to get a little awkward, Wayne walked over to the bow of the Perry, and pretended to give it a push, in jest.
At that moment, the ship began to slide, and down it went! They said it was just a coincidence, that they had been furiously trying to get it going, and it just gave at that point...
I’ll tell you who would have made a better Rooster Cogburn....Nick Nolte. Someone who was born for the part. That is if they could wring him out of the drunk tank long enough. Craggy aging face, no makeup needed.
>>”The John Wayne version of True Grit wasnt that great.”
(Spoken with The Duke’s characteristic drawl) Speak for yourself, pilgrim. “True Grit” and “Rooster Cogburn and the Lady” were classics I could watch over and over again.
Scouts Out! Cavalry Ho!<<
FILL YOUR HANDS, YOU...
Sure. I hope someone doesn’t post that sorry ass picture of him...
Favorite dialogue:
Reggie: Jack... Tell me a story.
Jack: F*ck you!
Reggie: Oh, that’s one of my favorites.
