In 1969, John Wayne played Rooster Cogburn in "True Grit" -- a grizzled, drunken U.S. Marshal hired by a 14-year-old girl to track down her father's killer. The role ended up winning the aging Western star his first and only Oscar, prompting him to make a rare sequel -- "Rooster Cogburn" -- opposite Katherine Hepburn in 1975. The image of Wayne's craggy, eye-patched visage from "True Grit" has become a cinematic icon.
So film mavens everywhere were taken aback when it was announced last year that Joel and Ethan Coen would been making their own version of "True Grit." But don't expect a straight remake; this movie is based more closely on the Charles Portis novel. And Jeff Bridges, fresh off his Oscar win, was tapped to play Cogburn; that's right, the Duke has been replaced by the Dude.

I stand humbled and corrected, sir.
Maureen O’Hara turned 90 yesterday. yes she is still breathing.
[Matt Damon - BARF!!!]
Only a sissy of this caliber would even ADMIT he hasn’t seen “True Grit”.
great??? GREAT!!!!??? ‘The Enemy Below”........greatest WW2 era war movie ever!!!!!!!! oh my was that man an actor! and what do we have now.........danm. I must be getting old........time to dummy up!!!
I thought Darby was horrible. She ruined the movie for me.
Half-hearted, insincere semi apology ;-)
However the sequel, Marshall Rooster Cogburn was a fine film. A genuine classic.
Absolutely not! It is a full throated honest apology, as i had a total brain cramp about Duval.
However, the roll is NOT a large one. I would have much rather scene he or even Hopper get a crack at the La Boeuf roll. I just dislike Cambell in the roll. He is ham handed at best and not a good actor. Also I never bought Darby as 14 years old. Having been 14 and having known many 14 year old girls, she is much too old fo rthe roll. She is passable aty best.
Our first born was nearly born at the Yokosuka O Club. The hospital said my wife wasn’t ready yet..so we headed to the club and had a couple drinks while watching a flick.
Same here, not a bad movie, but definitely not the Duke's best.
Hollywood has no original ideas anymore...all lib PC/indoctrination garbage...ironically, True Grit was one of the last movies I've seen on the big screen. Star Wars, Jaws, Star Trek, Batman(first big screen version)...that about covers the rest.
You missed my smileycon.
Amazing... the lefties always think they can do it better “True Grit” is an American classic.
Ah! The memories...:) That is too funny! “Come back later!”
why am I not surprised turd cruncher
ROBERT DUVALL!
Best.

Favorite Role: “Open Range” and “Lonesome Dove”
funny I can already see the “what culture war” knownothings here posting how they think this is just dandy making an iconic film with asshat lefty fops like Damon and Brolin
Cohens...jarjar likee
Bridges too...
but Damon and Brolin need their oversized heads smacked..and bitched up
Just like when he made the green berets. I cry all the way through that movie when I see it now-a-days. Once upon a time in Hollywood, we had some real patriots who were very outspoken.
Another for the ages. His dry humor was so great that it actually removed the water from all facets and fountains within 100 yards!
We were very fortunate to have his like in movies. This generation is limping along with people who, by and large, do not treat acting as a craft.
Just WOW! Well, this is her, forever frozen in time as one of the most sexy and beautiful women of the Big Screen. And a hearty HAPPY BIRTHDAY and MANY MORE to her!
