WASHINGTON: Nearly 80 per cent of the oil spilled from a BP well in the Gulf of Mexico is still in the gulf, US scientists have estimated, challenging a more optimistic assessment by the US government earlier in the month.
In its August 4 report, the National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration found that half the 4.9 million barrels of oil spilled by the April 20 blowout had been evaporated, burned, skimmed or dispersed.
A team of five scientists from the University of Georgia did their own analysis of the government data and came to a different conclusion.
"We just reanalysed this report...and then we calculated how much oil is still likely to be out there and that is how we came up to 70 to 79 per cent that must be out there," Charles Hopkinson, a marine scientist at the University of Georgia said yesterday.
"One major misconception is that oil that has dissolved into water is gone and therefore, harmless," he said.
"The oil is still out there and it will likely take years to completely degrade. We are still far from a complete understanding of what its impacts are," he said.
But we just don’t know where.
I am becoming more and more convinced that any 5 scientists in a group have less IQ than any single scientist in the group.
Or not. Since the scientists said “estimated” they actually said they cannot prove (they guessed).
Maybe, maybe not. But NOAA has satellites that say that Lake Michigan is only at a temp of 604 degrees. Their temp data is corrupt garbage. I don’t believe a word they say!
They are most likely fishing for a government grant.
Kelvin?...........
I may be wrong, but doesn’t oil float on water? So, if there was oil in the ocean, it would be on top? What am I missing here?
Experts
X Something that was.
Sperts Drip under pressure.
Don’t think it makes that much difference, does it?
From online conversion chart; “604 K = 627.8 ºF”
“But we just dont know where.”
....and further, they are hiring OJ Simpson to find it.
Which experts? Other experts are saying it is 75% gone.
Must be Bush’s fault!.......................
“I may be wrong, but doesnt oil float on water? So, if there was oil in the ocean, it would be on top? What am I missing here?”
You are missing the fact that BP’s wallet floats on water and oil, and they intend on making it even lighter.
Nearly 80% of the tea spoon of sugar is still in the pool, scientists say.
There could be some trapped in currents and so forth, but the majority of it should rise to the top, as you said.
These experts are full of something, and it isn't oil.
LOL, that was nice!
Is that surface temperature or emitted radiation temperature?
Some fluorescent lamps have the colour value marked: 6000 K.
“One major misconception is that oil that has dissolved into water is gone and therefore, harmless,”
Maybe not, but it’s gone in the sense that we can’t do anything to gather it.
