Glenn Beck has a message for the chronically unemployed: You're a bunch of un-American losers. The Fox News host thinks some 99ers — those who have used up their 99 weeks of unemployment benefits—should be embarrassed to call themselves Americans (Snip) "Go out and get a job," said Beck. "You may not want the job. Work at McDonald's. Work two jobs. There has been plenty of times in my life I've done jobs I hated, but I had no choice. Two years is plenty of time to have lived off your neighbor's wallet."

Not quite sure if what I do fits that. I am in one of the largest consulting companies in the world with over 20,000 practitioners across the globe in just the consulting part. Some may want to relegate that to “niche” but I am not so sure. I have had gigs with several of the Fortune 100 companies as well as some of the largest non-federal public sector agencies in the country. I also just got a raise and a bonus so they seem to like having me around.

But I have made it a point to be the “go to guy” in my line of business/software line and that strategy seems to have worked well. I let them (the Powers That Be) know I am investing my time in knowledge expansion (substitute whatever the heck the latest buzzword is for that). We seem to have reached accord: They supply the materials or class fees and I supply my time and pass what I learn to others.

It does have its fun moments. Sometimes when I am in serious heads-down debugging mode (which I love far more than management), I reprise Admiral Kirk in Wrath of Kahn when he says “sometimes you have to know How Things Work On A Starship” when I plumb the depths of things that just ain’t documented. Those moments are golden. :)

I have been employed pretty much continuously for over 35 years and have owned 2 businesses and had both public and private employers (none less that 5 years). I am not sure what reality you wish me to avoid that I have not encountered.

But I appreciate your desire for my continued success. I wish the same for you.

many many people who have never had problems with work before are absolutely devastated and mentally in anguish.

Ever since my first job at 14 cleaning floors in a factory I have never been denied for a job until this year. I put in an application and/or resume and I get the job. I used to turn down job offers I didn't apply for even if they offered more money.

Not any more.

I've lost count of how many jobs I've applied for since January. Most of them don't even give the common courtesy of a letter saying "sorry we found someone else". I can count on one hand how many interviews I've had.

I hear you, but these historic-type housecleanings were often the result of a spark. Today, any hot-head spark is likely to be an elite-backed agent provocateur. All I am saying is to watch out for that.

..that works both ways...people tend to inflate what they actually have done to one degree or another and companies know this...but to get a job that is less than desirable in order to work and make your own money...you have to bite the bullit of pride and down grade your resume to fit the job requirements they are asking for....It is humbling but you are then in the running. it is way better to be working...’All work is honorable”...then to be without work.

I suppose I could downgrade my resume. My experience is that I get asked about gaps if I leave out experience, but maybe that doesn't happen as much when applying for less challenging jobs. I'll give that a try. Thanks for the advise.

Sorry AM — I did apologize downthread and there has been animated discussion about outsourcing.

I stole not a single job. My company has invested in resources overseas at a rate of about 1/10 of onshore resources — for the same work. My job (these days) is to coordinate those resources.

We have to make a profit and that is all but impossible to use onshore developers. The Value Proposition for onshore folk is to manage and coordinate the work.

I’ve been thinking about North Dakota since they seem to be ignoring the recession currently.

However I’m underwater on my house due to falling housing market, but current with a good mortgage, not one of those ARM NINJA loans that caused this whole problem to begin with. So am pretty much locked here till something can be resolved on that front.

FReepers are smart. I always have been uncomfortable with ARMS and have insisted on Fixed rate from the beginning (re-fied a few years back to 5%). I will pay off the house early next year (Mrs. FD, Household CFO, says March, 2011) and I should be able to make a bit of a profit (MOVING TO TEXAS!!!). But if this had been 6 or 7 years ago I could have sold and pocketed a ton of dough to boot (California economy).

Have more than one resume....tweak it to however suites their requirements...if one is that experienced rename your job title rather than leave a gap.....It’s like the homemakers who changed their title to “Domestic Engineer”.... So if she’s looking for a maids job it would be better to list as Homemaker.

I was a high volume salesman....Changed it to simply Sales, with no fanfare of accomplishments...rather the “duties” I did...or “responsibilites”. Kept it short and to the point. Simple is good...and a one pager. Only list your last three jobs....unless a lifer...even then you can downsize all the glory points...

Thanks for the advise. And yes, I always keep my resume to 1 page. I've hired people in the past and I detest resumes you have to study to find anything on. It seems counter intuitive to exclude qualifications and accomplishments in order to get a job. I'm not saying it's wrong, it's just the opposite of how I've always viewed a resume.

A lot of the jobs listed on major job sites are fake- especially many listed by major companies and chains that are located in many cities. I have no idea why- but they are indeed listing jobs that don’t exist. If you actually apply for the job, and follow up you are told there is no opening at this time they are just taking applications to have on file. Also at times the jobs are listed for months after they have been filled. That makes no sense to me but it is happening.

Of course it’s opposite of what we have known...but the work world we are now operating in, and the competition is vastly different.

It’s harder to downgrade your resume than build one. But you are doing so to be competitive for the position...not over and above that....the interview is what you need and important to understand your first target is the interview.....then as opportunity presents itself you can weigh elaborating on your experiences pending on that conversation...which generally opens for further explanation of your skills and experiences....but if you overdue on the resume they’ll just set it with the other rejects.

Yep...many do this because it's a lazy mans way of keeping their options open if there is a rapid turnover....Hospitality and retail are two who constantly take applications and advertise for....just the nature of those businesses. People job jump alot in those businesses because the only way you can get a sizable raise is to negotiate at a new job.

The secret to getting a job is use the internet only to see what companies or businesses are hiring...you have to get out from in front of the computer and go there with resume in hand and the name of who does the hiring and ask to see them.. Otherwise you are just another name on a long list of applicants.

This reminded me of what happened to my daughter today. She had to attend a safety class and it was held in a rented conference room of a location that advertises how great they are at hosting meetings, classes, etc. Nice building, nice decor- very comfy. She thought the security and cleaning folks were a bit lax though- it seems a stray cat was living under the conference table with her litter of kittens. They all had a good laugh about it- but are you kidding me? There has to be several people at that place that are not doing their jobs for that to happen.
