CHARLESTON - An indistinct Hispanic convenience store that sold Mexican candy, prayer candles and hot sauce also dealt in fake green cards and other identification documents. And on Wednesday the scheme landed two men, including an illegal immigrant, in federal prison.
U.S. District Court Judge P. Michael Duffy sentenced the owner of Tele-Envios Tienda Latina, 37-year-old Fermin Gonzalez-Mendoza, to one year and nine months in prison and three years of supervised release for selling the identification cards. Duffy sentenced another man, 37-year-old Daniel Morales-Ramirez, to two years in prison and three years of supervised release for operating the document-making "plant" out of a Goose Creek home.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Dean Secor, who prosecuted the case, said officials made at least six undercover purchases of documents, including Mexican driver's licenses, Social Security cards and false permanent resident cards, commonly known as green cards.
Secor said Gonzalez-Mendoza is a permanent resident of the United States but that Morales-Ramirez is in the country illegally...
Investigators followed a car from the store to the Goose Creek home. When agents brought a search warrant there in July 2009 they seized cameras and phones, printers, a laptop, a typewriter, card stock, and blank Mexican birth certificates, blank green cards and blank Social Security cards, along with a .380-caliber handgun.
Two other men served as runners in the scam, driving the cards from the home to the store, according to prosecutors. Jesus Reyes-Saimont and Eduardo Chikar-Munoz both pleaded guilty and were sentenced to time served, which amounted to more than a year in jail each.

Phoenix, Arizona features an astounding annual car theft rate of 57,000 vehicles and has become the new Car Theft Capital of the World.
U.S. law enforcement authorities claim that there are now over 1 million members of criminal gangs inside the country. These 1 million gang members are responsible for up to 80% of the crimes committed in the United States each year.

i think death penalty would be effective deterrent.
it was illegal mexican immigrants who sold fake
ids to some of the 9/11 hijackers. selling these
should be considered a crime against the country.
other than great britain, what other countries would
be so lenient?
Would you also like to give the death penalty to the 19 year-old college kids who are selling fake ID’s to their fellow college students?
What a FU judge!!
They first became aware of this operation in 2006. Took ‘em FOUR EFFIN YEARS TO GET TWO CROOKS.
We need to fast track some of these crimes.
actually i was speaking a little tongue
in cheek. but i do think illegal immigrants who come
into our country and commit illegal acts like
this do deserve tougher punishment. everyone turns
a blind eye.
Morons! They just gotta get a bus ticket to New Mexico where they can get a legal drviers license.
Ping!
I assume that since the perp is not a US citizen or "permanent resident" that his supervised release will take place in his home country?
South Carolina

That is the annoying thing. The brilliant reporter who called the store “indistinct” when she meant nondescript didn’t say what their outcome would be. Since neither are citizens they should both be deported.
The Post and Courier has some of the most inept and grammatically-challenged writers out there.
Aren’t there any editors? Copy editors? Are they constantly made fun of?
There are times when I believe the average Joe on the street could do a better job of constructing the King’s English than can these journalism school graduates.
The “reporters” for TV stations are the worst.
No. His home country is your home country ... and Aunt Zeituni will be his probation officer.
Furthermore, if it is one's first day as an illegal, one can RENT fake ID in LA to get started. You know, buy a home with Federal Assistance, get a Drivers License, and make some money during that tense and awkward period while waiting for the birth of the Anchor Baby?
It takes the Post Office weeks to deliver a passport. MacArthur Park? Same day service.
Hmmm... perhaps we need to have a Fake ID Showdown to resolve this once and for all. We could prolly get some guys from ICE to be the judges. :-)
What with refilling water jugs in the desert, marking the roads in from Canada with signs in Arabic, and delivering Welcome Wagon Packages to illegal aliens purchasing new homes, these fellas and gals are pretty well booked, Chuck.
Perhaps the illegal alien registration team from over at ACORN could help? BTW, I am glad you share my sympathy for the plight of the illegals. They have to buy several sets of documents to match their multiple personas, or I guess, "avatars." That represents a lot of lawns mowed, or more efficiently, many bales of cannabis transported.
Mendoza y Gomez, Gomez de Mendoza, jes plain Mendoza, jes Plain Gomez (although this one is greatly overworked) , Mendoza de Gomez. Imagine the possible embarrassment at Emergency Rooms, Welfare Offices, Voting Precincts, Food Stamp Offices ... standing there sorting through all of these documents ... thank goodness they are in Spanish, and the Affirmative Action facilitators on duty are kind and patient!
