Remarks by the President at Iftar Dinner (full text)
White House ^ | Aug. 13, 2010 | Barack Hussein Obama

Now, that's not to say that religion is without controversy. Recently, attention has been focused on the construction of mosques in certain communities -- particularly New York. Now, we must all recognize and respect the sensitivities surrounding the development of Lower Manhattan. The 9/11 attacks were a deeply traumatic event for our country. And the pain and the experience of suffering by those who lost loved ones is just unimaginable. So I understand the emotions that this issue engenders. And Ground Zero is, indeed, hallowed ground.

But let me be clear. As a citizen, and as President, I believe that Muslims have the same right to practice their religion as everyone else in this country. (Applause.) And that includes the right to build a place of worship and a community center on private property in Lower Manhattan, in accordance with local laws and ordinances. This is America. And our commitment to religious freedom must be unshakeable. The principle that people of all faiths are welcome in this country and that they will not be treated differently by their government is essential to who we are. The writ of the Founders must endure.

On the very next Greek Orthodox holy day, I'm sure Obama will announce his support for the long-delayed rebuilding of St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church, which was destroyed on 9/11. /s

Since part of one of the planes landing gear fell into and damaged the building there it certainly is part of Ground Zero. I wasn't aware of this. Please post some information, perhaps a link.

You can see this clearly in a diagram at page 1-6 of the official 2002 FEMA report: World Trade Center Building Performance Study, chapter 1

It's also referenced in Twin Towers: Qualitative Analysis of Collapse Behavior: "Also UA Flight 175, after penetrating the building from the south in a NE trajectory, ejects part of its content through the northern face. For instance part of the fuselage has been found on top of WTC 5, Figure 8. Also the landing gear was found at 45 Park Place and one engine at the corner of Murray Street and Church Street. Both places are further north, three blocks apart from WTC 5. More details and pictures may be found in chapter 1 of the FEMA (2002) report."

The Wikipedia page also mentions this: "The plane penetrated through the tower, and part of the plane's landing gear and fuselage came out the north side of the tower and crashed through the roof of 45–47 Park Place, and through two of its floors. The plane parts destroyed three floor beams, and severely compromised the building's internal structure.[13][20][25][31][32]" and cites many sources for this at its references 13, 20, 25, 31, and 32.

The first Muslim ambassador to the United States, from Tunisia, was hosted by President Jefferson, who arranged a sunset dinner for his guest because it was Ramadan —- making it the first known iftar at the White House, more than 200 years ago. (Applause.)
________________________________________________

Applause ???

For an unsourced comment ???

Did not one of those educated men and women ask Barry what he meant by such an statement ???

If Barry Soetoro declared the sky was blue I’d step outside to check...

Jefferson was at war with the Moslems...

What was the name of this “first Muslim ambassador to the United States” ???

When is the dinner supposed to have happened...

According to Wiki Jefferson spoke with a Moslem ambassador to britian brefore he was POTUS in London, 1785 and they were not aboujt to “break bread”

“In March 1785, Thomas Jefferson and John Adams went to negotiate with Tripoli’s envoy to London, Ambassador Sidi Haji Abdrahaman (or Sidi Haji Abdul Rahman Adja). Upon inquiring “concerning the ground of the pretensions to make war upon nations who had done them no injury”, the ambassador replied:

It was written in their Koran, that all nations which had not acknowledged the Prophet were sinners, whom it was the right and duty of the faithful to plunder and enslave; and that every muslim who was slain in this warfare was sure to go to paradise. He said, also, that the man who was the first to board a vessel had one slave over and above his share, and that when they sprang to the deck of an enemy’s ship, every sailor held a dagger in each hand and a third in his mouth; which usually struck such terror into the foe that they cried out for quarter at once. [2] [3]

Jefferson reported the conversation to Secretary of Foreign Affairs John Jay, who submitted the Ambassador’s comments and offer to Congress. Jefferson argued that paying tribute would encourage more attacks. Although John Adams agreed with Jefferson, he believed that circumstances forced the U.S. to pay tribute until an adequate navy could be built. The U.S. had just fought an exhausting war, which put the nation deep in debt. Federalist and anti-federalist forces argued over the needs of the country and the burden of taxation. Jefferson’s own Democratic-Republicans and anti-navalists believed that the future of the country lay in westward expansion, with Atlantic trade threatening to siphon money and energy away from the new nation on useless wars in the Old World.[4] The U.S. paid Algiers the ransom, and continued to pay up to $1 million per year over the next 15 years for the safe passage of American ships or the return of American hostages. Payments in ransom and tribute to the privateering states amounted to 20 percent of United States government annual revenues in 1800.[citation needed]

Jefferson continued to argue for cessation of the tribute, with rising support from George Washington and others. With the recommissioning of the American navy in 1794 and the resulting increased firepower on the seas, it became increasingly possible for America to refuse paying tribute, although by now the long-standing habit was hard to overturn.

His “let me be clear” is like fingernails grating on a chalkboard. When he says that, I head for the hills. He tries to sound so big and bad—like a high school principal threatening the rowdy boys with suspension.

From Wiki...

Islam in the United States

The earliest documented case of a Muslim to come to the United States is Dutchman Anthony Janszoon van Salee, who was born and raised in Spain and Morocco as the child of a pirate turned local governor and admiral and a Muslim mother. Van Salee came to New Amsterdam around 1630 and was referred to as ‘Turk’ and a landowner on Long Island. A Koran remained for long in the posession of his descendents, who apparently converted to Christianity. [1][2]

Later there were two West African slaves: Ayuba Suleiman Diallo, who was brought to America in 1731 and returned to Africa in 1734,[3]

and Omar Ibn Said in the mid 19th century. There has been some speculation that a Moor slave Estevanico of Azamor, who had converted to Christianity [4][5][6] 14 years before his arrival in North America in the early 16th century, was at least the first born Muslim to enter the historical record in North America.[7] There is also a tradition of an Egyptian named Norsereddin who settled in the Hudson Valley during colonial times

ISLAM HOWEVER WAS ALMOST COMPLETELY ABSENT IN THE UNITED STATES UNTIL THE 20th CENTURY.

The oldest Muslim community to establish in the country was the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community, in 1921, which pre-dates Nation of Islam.[8][9]

Thank you, King Hussein. You’ve shown the American people where you stand, again. Now we can always be sure that when the interests of this nation conflict with Islam, that you will always choose Islam.

From Wiki...

There are 40,000 to 50,000 mosques in the United States. Mosques first appeared in the United States in the early twentieth century, the likely first being one in Maine built by Albanian immigrants in 1915. [1]

a piece of landing gear fell through the roof of trhe Burlington Coat Factory building which is the address the muzzies want.

“More importantly, his building has special historical significance because of 911. It was part of the attack. The landing gear of one of the planes that crashed into the World Trade Center towers flew out to the Burlington Coat Factory building, and fell through the roof to the basement. The fact that the committee ignores that fact is outrageous, and disrespects the victims of 911.”

just as important is the muslims refusal of Gov Patterson’s offer to find another site

I say we amend the Constitution to make a First Amendment exception for Islam.

“Two centuries ago, Thomas Jefferson held the first recorded Iftar with the Ambassador from Tunisia at sunset. It was not until 1999 that then-First Lady Hillary Rodham Clinton – “(applause) – broke new ground by hosting the first-ever Eid celebration at the White House. And now at sunset, during the holy month of Ramadan, Iftars are as common in Washington as an evening reception.”

And here’s is the full text of his speech during the Ramadan dinner he hosted in the WH in 2009:

http://www.whitehouse.gov/the-press-office/remarks-president-iftar-dinner

“So tonight, we celebrate a great religion, and its commitment to justice and progress.

One of those values is the freedom to practice your religion — a right that is enshrined in the First Amendment of the Constitution. Nashala Hearn, who joins us from Muskogee, Oklahoma, took a stand for that right at an early age. When her school district told her that she couldn’t wear the hijab, she protested that it was a part of her religion. The Department of Justice stood behind her, and she won her right to practice her faith. She even traveled to Washington to testify before Congress. Her words spoke to a tolerance that is far greater than mistrust — when she first wore her headscarf to school, she said, “I received compliments from the other kids.””

But if you wear a cross, you get fired...

That's a whole other issue, and more in line with Obama's statement.

Yes, I realized that.

Regarding the discussion on whether the site is "Ground Zero" or not, I offer this link to a more uplifting use of ground hallowed on 9/11/2001 (again, I am not supporting or rebutting anything you wrote):

When the Rapture of the Christian Church occurs, they will be the new majority in the USA. Join them and the AC or loose your head. Something these people love to perform. In the END they will be destroyed. Who knows, if O isn’t a Christian, he will be here to see it all. Pray people! Seek the Lord while he may be found.

That is why they WILL take over this country, but only after the CHURCH is removed in the RAPTURE, along with the restraining power of the HOLY SPIRIT. GOD help all those who are left behind. When that time comes, the AGE OF GRACE is over, salvation will be loosing your head for then accepting JESUS CHRIST. People, please read and believe John 3:16 before this happens. If you have already, just hold on, the LORD will take care of us.

I give you Hagia Sophia:

“The Hagia Sophia or Ayasofya as it is known in Turkish was actually a patriarchal Basilica that has been considered to be an embodiment of Byzantine architecture and also had the distinction of remaining the largest cathedral in the world until 1520. Built on the orders of the Byzantine Emperor Justinian, its interiors were richly decorated with artistic mosaics depicting various religious scenes and were supported by massive marble pillars.”

“For God, the Cid, and Spain”

“1080. It was an unhappy time. Spain was war-torn. It was half Christian and half Moor. Rodrigo Diaz of Vivar came to be known as “El Cid” (”The Lord”). He was a simple man who became Spain’s greatest hero. At the time the African Emir was Ben Yusuf who gathered his forces in North Africa.

Ben Yusuf tells his men that they will first take Spain, then Europe and then the whole world.

A Spanish church is burning. A Catholic Father prays at the burned altar. Rodrigo comes over to help the Father get up. He tells the Father that they have captured the leaders of the destruction. The Father says to Rodrigo that he is a long way from home. Rodrigo explains that he was on his way to his wedding when he suddenly had to fight a battle with the Moors. Now he will take the captured Moorish leaders to Vivar.”
