By charging headlong into the ferocious controversy over the plan to build a mosque near Ground Zero, President Barack Obama may have further damaged Democratic Party prospects in the upcoming mid-term elections.
For while his return to the soaring rhetoric that won him the White House in the first place will be popular with hard-core liberal supporters, it is unlikely to capture the hearts of middle-America this year.
In 2008 Mr Obama was a largely unknown quantity running on the strength of untried ideas and a ringing call for moral superiority. But now all of that has changed.
According to the NBC News-Wall Street Journal poll, 52 per cent of Americans disapprove of Mr Obama's handling of the economy; 45 per cent disapprove of his handling of the Afghanistan war; 40 per cent say the country is worse off since he became president.
Mr Obama has lost the political high ground and on the mosque issue - where emotions are far more likely than logic to win the argument - his stand will not go down well at the voting booths in November.
The President may be right in declaring that Muslims have the same right to practice their religion as everyone else in America, but that is not the question as middle America sees it.
For the majority of Americans this is not an issue of freedom of religion. It is a question of whether or not a mosque should be built within two blocks of Ground Zero, where 3,000 people perished when jetliners hijacked by Muslim extremists were flown into the World Trade Center towers on September 11, 2001.

A new Gallup poll reveals that Pres. Obama’s Jewish support is the strongest of any other non-Hispanic white religious grouping:
“In the south, the blacks will still vote 90% democrat, no matter what the democrats do.”
They don’t care about votes. They just care about bringing about the downfall of the USA. If we vote them out of office, they will become lobbyists, or get a high-paying job within some democrat administration living off our money.
One place we need to change the rules though right now is absentee ballots.

All they seem to think/feel is “in your face” to anything and everything which is “conservative.” Their moderators are not moderators at all, they are extremists; attempts to question or equivocate on an extreme but popular view there soon get the questioner banned. This is more than Democrat; it is autocrat and marxist.
The problem with this country is that decent, hard-working Christian people in this country that actually work and pay real taxes have forgotten, or are too wimpy, to ACT. They have forgotten how to act on their beliefs. They have forgotten how to fight. They have forgotten righteous indignation. In short, they fall prey to the fallacy of "what will others think?" instead of standing firm by their heritage and beliefs.

I see this as another “push” by Obama to incite violence that can be blamed on his political opponents (us).
Interesting concept, not without some merit...OTOH, it is sure to cost the Dems several House seats, and possibly a Senate seat as well...which may be what he wants..
It’s really both. Sometimes showing itself as political, sometimes as spiritual.

I think the party still does but not Obama himself or the handful of 60s radicals that are running the show. To Obama, his cause is much greater than votes. He has a vision and he is trying to restructure America to fit that vision. And he knows he has only two more years left to accomplish whatever he can.

This mosque, like so many others - for all intents, purposes and by sharia law - is a freaking foreign government!
We may well lose the fight on religious grounds, and by what is Liberal intolerance/hate for America; but allowing a foreign government to be installed here, or 'anywhere' in America, for that matter - challenges moral competence. That this effort carries the imprimature of our enemy, only further degrades this issue. Our Constitution does not invite such insanity!
We have only to imagine the Vatican State wanting to have it's own 'statehood' in every Catholic cathedral, here and worldwide. This of course, is not their intention; but we can be assured, that Vatican mini-States - autonomous States - would never be up for debate; not even under the guise of 'freedom of religion'. And yet. . .
