A city cop -- and niece of former Met Shawon Dunston -- was released on $1,000 bail this morning after being charged with shooting her lesbian lover in a vicious quarrel.
Ekeythia Dunston, 32, claimed she shot her long-time gal pal Erica Legall, 42, early Monday morning in self-defense because she was being attacked herself with a clothing iron.
"Obviously there are extenuating circumstances here," said defense attorney Edgar De Leon in Manhattan criminal court.
The couple -- who been together for five years and are raising two sons together -- began arguing over a text message Dunston received around 3 a.m. on Monday in their Harlem apartment.

Were they fighting over who gets the vibrator?
I wonder if they can iron out their problems.
Hold my beer while I grab my iron and watch this...
lol
What do you think - is it the 10 year age difference that’s the problem? ;)
Or one wanting to be like Mrs.Tiger with the iron?
What's this do for gay marriage in the armed services?
Cheers!
Not sure what that has to do with anything - it’s not like straight people don’t shoot their spouses or significant others.
What about the two kids?
Emphasis on “people” I think is warranted. These *things* aren’t people. They’re animals.
Sources told The Post that both women were intoxicated...
Don’t bring an iron to a gunfight.
WTF ping
Didn’t think police carried revolvers anymore.
Great example of anger management for the 2 sons they are raising
It says the shooter was treated for an iron-related head injury. Wonder if she really was in fear for her life? I mean, she should be able to defend herself w/o her weapon when sober but perhaps couldn’t do it intoxicated. Certainly not my initial assumption but now I do wonder.
Commenters to that page say that domestic violence is higher for lesbian couples than for hetero couples. They give wildly divergent numbers of 65% higher or 3x higher but I wonder what the number is and if it is indeed higher. I had never heard that before. I have seen, unfortunately, cop shows that feature gay males really maiming each other in ‘routine’ fights and, *shudder*, thought the apparent stepped up violence was a result of two intoxicated males trying to make a marriage work but now I am hearing that female couples are also prone to domestic violence - ah but this one featured intoxication too. Not sure where I’d get the numbers but I am curious if lesbian couples do have a markedly higher rate of domestic violence.
What an environment for those poor kids. They are probably messed up for life already.
