Plane with 8 aboard crashes in southwest Alaska; possible fatalities (Ted Stevens May Be Aboard)

JUNEAU, Alaska - Authorities said Tuesday that a plane believed to be carrying eight people has crashed in southwest Alaska.

Alaska National Guard spokesman Maj. Guy Hayes said the Guard was called to the area about 20 miles north of Dillingham at about 7 p.m. Monday after a passing aircraft saw the wreckage.

Hayes says there are possible fatalities. State and federal officials say severe weather has hampered the rescue operation.

Hayes says about five good Samaritans were on scene early Tuesday helping the crash victims. He says he was told by Alaska State Troopers that there were "eight or nine" people on board, though a spokeswoman for the troopers, Megan Peters, refused to comment.

The aircraft is a 1957 DeHavilland DHC-3 Otter registered to Anchorage-based communications company GCI, the Federal Aviation Administration told the Anchorage Daily News. A woman at the Regional Operations Center told The Associated Press all further information was pending notification of next of kin.

Dillingham is located in northern Bristol Bay, about 325 miles southwest of Anchorage.

According to the Anchorage Daily News, former U.S. Sen. Ted Stevens was reportedly traveling to a GCI-owned lodge in the area and friends are concerned he may have been on the downed plane.

That doesn’t look like an Otter.I think Otters are twin-engined.

If this happened at 7 last night, and if Ted Stevens was not on that plane, I'm sure communications in Alaska are not that primitive that he couldn't call or radio that he's okay from wherever he is.

It's a little scary that no one has heard from him by now.

Well, take it for what it’s wrth (which is next to nothing in this case). His Wikipedia page says he is dead: Theodore “Ted” Fulton Stevens (November 18, 1923 - August 10, 2010) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ted_Stevens

Any more news on Stevens yet? I am kinda surprised this is not leading the cable news this morning. If they suspect he was on board, you would think they would be running the story. Prayers up!

It is a play on something Stevens said some years ago. He said that the internet was a series of tubes. My memory is not great so I’m sure someone will give you the exact quote.

The Otter is single engine

Then there's the Twin Otter

thanks. I have flown on twins, and barely remember the single Otters.I get them mixed up with the single-engine Beaver.

The new singles look very nice, very sleek. I see they have a new type of engine.

Stevens, the longest-serving Republican senator in history, was defeated in 2008 following his conviction for failing to report corporate gifts. The charges were later dropped because of prosecutorial misconduct.

I hope the Senator sued the living pants out of the government and those involved lost their very jobs!

Right now aircraft crashes are a real sensitive subject, we had the first ever C-17 crash a couple of weeks ago, and then shortly thereafter a C-17 cargo plane crashed, no survivors from either crash.

Alaska is big, more than twice the size of Texas, where the crash happened isn’t primitive but its also not heavily populated and not everyone is carrying a cellphone and happens to have twitter or facebook.

It will be a huge and sorrowful impact upon Alaska if Ted Stevens has passed away and will also open up a lot of dirt digging stories, I could contribute some stories myself but I doubt it would be in good taste.

Watch for what Sarah Palin does, where she goes and her news speeches folks, watch her character closely, you will see her in a different light I am sure, of course I am referring to if she has to comment of and its not known yet that Ted Stevens has indeed perished.

If Stevens wasn’t on that plane, wouldn’t they have located him by now?

I am sure Sarah will do and say the right thing, whatever the outcome. Hopefully Stevens survived, but being 86 years old does not bode well. Prayers Up for all involved.
