You don't need the U.S. Misery Index to tell you that things are bad in the U.S. Unemployment is near or at all-time highs in many parts of the country, foreclosures continue to happen at unprecedented rates and there are some very real indicators that we are heading toward a double-dip recession.

Some of us should count our lucky stars, however. In certain U.S. cities, life is much worse for residents than in other areas of the country. Using a variety of criteria, including unemployment rates, health data, the number of foreclosures, crime statistics, climate and other measures of misery, WalletPop came up with its unofficial list of the 10 worst cities to live in. This list is far from comprehensive, but there are some significant reasons why these cities made the cut. Read on.

Of the worst 10 list, I’ve been to Cleveland, Detroit, Las Vegas, LA and Phoenix.

Among these, only Detroit should be on the list.No way Phoenix should be on the list.

I fry a lot of stuff in lard...french fries and onion rings just taste so much better that way! And since I weigh 110 soaking wet and my kids are rails, it obviously isn’t disagreeing with us :) Can’t speak for dh, though LOL. (I hope he doesn’t see that)

I grew up south of Buffalo. There were natural gas wells there back in the 1970’s. I knew two families who had gas wells on their property. There has been oil exploration on the NY/PA border for 100 years. Ever hear of Oil City , PA. and Quakerstate ?

The economic malaise of upstate NY can be blamed on one thing. NY govt.

Actually it’s probably due to the rapid rise of the rates for murder and kidnapping; one of the things that helped push the immigration bill to pass... and it will be interesting to see how the bill impacts those rates.

LOL! There is a high probability our next governor will be Tom Corbett. Cobett is so pro-drilling in the Marcellus Shale region that there is a good chance we Pennsylvanians will have the New York portion all drilled out as well before the NY politicians come to their senses.

I wonder why it supposedly has such a problem with obesity. Lots of good food? Too hot/cold to exercise?

High Native American Population percentage. Native Americans are more likely to become obese on a "European" diet.

Phoenix and others probably made it because it's been too easy for illegals to live there.

The lostest I've ever been was in Tulsa, that was pre G.P.S. days. I started to think that I'd just have to live there because I couldn't find my way out.

Yes, I'd agree with this list, BUT there are a number of other cities that could be added. These cities all have ONE THING IN COMMON. I let the readers figure that one out. Most here are more than smart enough.

Thank you! I live in the suburbs of Cleveland. They dog us about the weather and then overlook the weather in Minn. (#1 livable). The county government is getting cleaned up. Sure we are hurting in the sports category, but we have had our share of heartbreak in that category, but at least we still have major sports team and have fought to keep them here. I just dont see how Cleveland came in 2nd to a small town on the Mexican border.

Another democrat city falling apart from forty years of corruption and democrat rule.It’s Detroit’s twin except WE have TWO big sports stadiums (thanks to the taxpayers) to show off our two losing teams (browns and indians) with planning like that why arent we happy?

I live not too far from Eden Prairie. It wouldn’t hurt my feelings if they put EP in the top ten worst cities - maybe that would help keep some of the riff-raff from coming to MN...
