Poland's new President Bronislaw Komorowski sworn in

WARSAW — Bronislaw Komorowski was sworn in Friday as Poland's new president after a snap election forced by the air crash death of Lech Kaczynski, but his defeated rival snubbed the official ceremony.

Jaroslaw Kaczynski, the bereaved identical twin of the late president, was not in parliament for the inauguration, with a party spokesman suggesting the president's camp had insulted his dead brother's memory during the campaign.

In his inaugural address, the free-market liberal Komorowski vowed to support Poland's government in developing ties within the European Union and NATO, with strategic partner the United States as well as with Russia.

"We want to reinforce, inspire and make the Old Continent (Europe) more dynamic," the 58-year-old told both houses of parliament as he was sworn in as Poland's fourth democratically-elected president.

Komorowski named Brussels, Paris and Berlin as the destinations for his first official foreign visits.

Asked why his rival Kaczynski stayed away, a spokesman for his conservative Law and Justice (PiS) party told AFP: "Civic Platform politicians made brutal verbal attacks on president Lech Kaczynski when he was alive and some continue to do so even after his death."

A lot of Poles are having mustaches. Actually not so bad. If it remotely comes into fashion again I’ll grow one myself. But I’d shave it off to some kind of a “ten day mustache”.

The meaning of “liberal” is a bit different in Europe, than in USA.

For example - “a conservative liberal” sounds silly in America, whereas in Europe it would be a person with typically US Republican views - in favour of free-economy (classical liberal, e.g Adam Smith) and socially conservative (religion, family, tradition, patriotism, etc.).

Komorowski named Brussels, Paris and Berlin as the destinations for his first official foreign visits

A visit to the headquarters' of the Axis of Weasels who all sided with Russia against the allied invasion of Iraq? Is Poland moving from the US-UK team into the "old Europe" Franco-German Axis?

This party is considered to be in close relationship with German CDU and strongly support Euro-federalism. Komorowski just won the chair and his supposedly “pro-free market” party announced increase of VAT by 1%. What is more Euro-Commissar who origin from this party just announced a wish to establish new all-European tax. Add his liberal attitude toward Catholic faith and everything is clear, another asshole who will spoil Polish politics.

As far as foreign policy is concentrated, be sure that he is loyal to Brussels in the first place. However I would not expect them to harm Polish-American relations.

Basically yes, personally. His party seems to be less radical as far as social leftism is concentrated. However direction is the same. Beside of that Kwasniewski lead his political platform when he became president. Komorowski is just a marionette of PM Tusk.
