The Best Room
August 6, 2010

During a January research trip to Germany, I was dismayed to learn that we would be staying at a monastery. I pictured an austere place with no heat, cold stone floors, and hard beds. Instead, I found a warm, welcoming, comfortable room. My colleague said, “The monks believe in treating their guests as they would treat Christ.” Though they don’t live in such comfort themselves, they are content.

Robert Herrick, a 17th-century English poet, wrote:
Christ, He requires still, wheresoe’er He comes,
To feed, or lodge, to have the best of rooms:
Give Him the choice; grant Him the nobler part
Of all the house: the best of all’s the heart.

It may seem easier to welcome Christ into our heart than to open our life to others. Whether it’s a room in our home or time in our schedule, too often we treat people as intruders rather than guests.

The apostle Peter wrote: “Above all things have fervent love for one another, for ‘love will cover a multitude of sins.’ Be hospitable to one another without grumbling” (1 Peter 4:8-9).

We honor Christ by giving Him the best room, our hearts, and by offering willing hospitality to others.

I am Yours, Lord, yet teach me all it means,
All it involves of love and loyalty,
Holy service, full and glad surrender,
And unreserved obedience unto Thee! —Bennett

To know love, open your heart to Jesus. To show love, open your heart to others.

Read: 1 Peter 4:7-14

Be hospitable to one another without grumbling. —1 Peter 4:9

Good morning, Everyone. Good morning to our

AWESOME

Military, our Allies, and their families.

Thank you, Ma, for preparing the Canteen for today’s activities.

DC Metroland weather report ~ Today.... Some clouds this morning will give way to generally sunny skies for the afternoon. High 92F. Winds WNW at 5 to 10 mph. ~ Tonight.... Some clouds this evening will give way to mainly clear skies overnight. Low 67F. Winds N at 5 to 10 mph.

Whew! We had a heck of a storm roll through yesterday eve. Pouring rain. Happily, it waited until after I was back on dry land and almost home before it unloaded.

A friend and I went on a local cruise from Reedville, Virginia across the Chesapeake Bay to Tangier Island, VA. It was just a day outing and we were hoping the predicted thunderstorms held off until we were back home. She was, I wasn't.

If you are ever in the area, check out the Northern Neck cruises. There are a number of them.

Can't stay long. Got a few chores to do before I head to the pool for a few hours. Got to go back to work on Monday. Not looking forward to it.

Time for me to make my rounds. Internet seems slow this morning, so if I happen to disappear it may be because I threw my computer out the door. LOL

Anway, if I miss any of you today, I should catch up with you on Monday.

Now remember, the Canteen is

So, come on in and sit for a while. There's always plenty of coffee, pancakes, conversation, silliness, and plain old BS

REMEMBER THEM

DEFENDERS OF FREEDOM

FR CANTEEN MISSION STATEMENT

Showing support and boosting the morale of our military and our allied military and the family members of the above. Honoring those who have served before.
