Google CEO Eric Schmidt has said today that about 200,000 new Android devices are now being sold daily, leading to huge growth in revenue for the search giant thanks to mobile search traffic.
When asked about the recent studies showing Android outpacing the iPhone handily, Schmidt added: "People are finally beginning to figure out how successful Android is. The number was about 100,000 (a day) about two months ago. It looks like Android is not just phenomenal but incredibly phenomenal in its growth rate. God knows how long that will continue."
While Google does not directly gain revenue from Android (which is free and open source), the more successful the operating system is, the more people are connected to the Web from their mobile phones, leading to an increase in search.
"Trust me that revenue is large enough to pay for all of Android's activities and a whole bunch more," Schmidt added, via Cnet. "I should also say that we love the success of the iPhone because the iPhone also uses Google's search and we get a chunk of that revenue when people search on the iPhone."

The Android does have one advantage over the IPOD: Verison vs AT&T. Given the abysmal performance of my company-issued Blackberry over the AT&T network, I’ve learned two things: I’ll never purchase a Blackberry for my own phone, and I’ll wait until Apple moves the Iphone to a network designed by competent RF engineers.
OK, it’s Verizon.
We’ll soon be switching over to Droid from Blackberry. I like Verizon’s service, it just works, however the Blackberry is just too damn slow and limited.
I just hope I don’t break it, I’m a little rough on phones...

That’s a lot of devices! I know I’m enjoying my iRobot $130 tablet... Fun little device, and the battery life is actually quite good!
I just love that it’s customizable and rootable. Not to mention you can make it a hotspot and sniff packets.

Do you think Apple’s model with the iPhone was designed for market dominance? Or more like their model in computers, a smaller market share but large profits?
What about venison? I’d take that over any of these phones - so much better when it’s slow roasted!
200,000/day is high volume, high production velocity for a product that complex.
You must really have a bad case of envy! Do you wear a sock in your pants?
Apple Market cap as of yesterday close: 240.25 Billion
Yep, damn stupid! /sarcasm again!!!
And we welcome our new Robot Overlords.
oh.........it’s a phone?
Careful, you never know where those packets have been...
I have a Palm Centro. Talk about backing a loser. I got it because I thought it would be a seamless transition from my palm tungsten. I should have known, there is never a seamless transition in technology.
I’ve been thinking about getting an iPhone, either the previous generation - the 3g, or the new iPhone 4. Maybe I should look in the Verizon store and see what the droid can do.
I need it for a business tool, to interface with calendar, task list, and addresses, as well as email and internet. It also serves some personal functions - photos, etc. I miss being able to read books on the device, which I could do with my tungsten, but there is no ereader app for the Centro, as I discovered to my dismay.
Anyone have any thoughts that could help me decide?
This fact leads to a number of interesting analysis, but I don't even want to go there.
Toys "R" Us?

In fact, iPhone and Evo are almost unobtainable...they can't make them fast enough.
That’s OK. Its spelling can have different Verzions.
I had an iPhone 3G for the past two years. Upgrading to the iPhone 4 was as simple as plugging in the cable.

I use my iPhone as a business tool... and an iPod... and a GPS device... and address book... and calendar and tasks (all sync'd through Mobileme)... and ebook reader... and game device... and photos... and videos... and more.
I haven't personally tried the Droid--partially because I didn't want to start over again (remember, I only had to plug in a cable) but my iPhone is easy and does everything I need it to do. Never had a problem in 2+ years of ownership.
Thank you for the insight. Somehow, I dont think transitioning from a disconinued Palm product, which didn’t last two years on the market, will be particularly seamless.
I’m not sure which device I’ll get. Maybe I’ll wait till some of the furor dies down, and iPhone 4’s are more readily available. Is it that much better than your 3g?
