Katie Couric, whose real name is Katherine Anne Couric, mocked the names of Sarah Palins children during a rehearsal in her studio. Her comments, made during the 2008 presidential campaign, are being discussed in the blogosphere today after being leaked.
Where the hell do they get these names from? she asked, referring to Palin children Trig and Track, sending her crew into peals of laughter.
I have some new names for CBS. In a tragedy in Louisiana this Monday, six young teenagers drowned.
Their names were: Takeitha, JaMarcus, JaTavious, Litrelle, LaDairus and Latevin.
These, like the names of Palins children, are American names.
Times have changed since Jews newly arrived from Europe named their boys either Marty or Bernie and black people in the South named their kids either Bessy or Washington. You dont really want to go into things like where the hell a name like Katherine got a K on the front of it instead of a C, as it was spelled in the tradition. The neurosis could drag all the way back to Prague, say, in the 1600s.
The singular feature of America that persists west of 57th Street, where Katie and CBS live in paralysis, acting out an early-60s fantasy equal to that of Mad Men, is that we Americans are born free and find and take that freedom in every generation.
In terms anthropologists like Mircea Eliade and Sir James George Fraser would use, you could say we chop down the fathers tree in every generation; an archetypal reenactment of George Washington chopping down the cherry tree to free us from our pasts European, personal and otherwise and their anchors to the prisons of orthodoxy and tradition.
In this regard we plant our own tree and we take our own names. It is sacred and symbolic. And in this sacred act we name our kids any damn thing we please.
ROFL
If you knew anything at all, you would have witnessed what I wrote about that article, but you only care about what you want to read about Sarah. Figures.
I like the names. I think they are interesting. Katie Couric is an old has been petty witch.
This story assumes the insults are coming from a person who still has a following.
Sarah quit the Catholic Church. She has a problem with loyalty. She has a problem with staying with something that gets challenging. She probably thought being Catholic was too hard and being governor was too hard so what does she do???? QUIT!!!
In the Protestant parts of Germany the name Katherina is from the famous “Katherina von Bora,” Dr. Martin Luther’s wife...who by all accounts was a force to be reckoned with...
I wonder when Katie will poke fun at these children's names?
I hope she is done having kids and she doesn’t look at a back hoe? lol
One favored tactic of the left is ridicule. They did it to President Ford, Dan Quayle, and now to Palin.
So I guess you maintain that anyone who due to conscience leaves the Roman Church for another Church is a quitter?
That would make virtually all the founders of America descendant from quitters?
hmmmmm
Well, that explains everything... But I have a few questions and observations.
1) What if Todd was on the football team?
2) They named their child after a fishing lease?
3) Willow I actually understand - I know a woman named willow - it’s also a type of tree or bush.
4) Good thing they didn’t have a Beechcraft/Raytheon.
and finally,
5) “Trig” isn’t Norwegian for strong. If they wanted to call him that they would have used alkoholholdig, barsk, fast, holdbar, kraftig, mektig, robust, solid, stabil, sterk, varig, varm, or vedvarende, but not Trig. Maybe they both liked math class.
Couric is a worthless old hag with zero talent.
Why is this useless pig still on the air?
This is a keeper! LOL.
You still think Sarah wrote this title! I give up. I'm a twit because you said so and I lie and cause 'troble' just like Palin. Good enough. You flatter me. I have no idea who Tantakan is, but please don't bother to tell me, since you're obviously delighted s/he lost and I would have to throw myself a pity party...lol.
Early life and career
Couric was born in Arlington, Virginia, the daughter of Elinor Tullie (née Hene), a homemaker and part-time writer, and John Martin Couric Jr., a public relations executive and news editor at The Atlanta Journal-Constitution and the United Press in Washington, D.C. Her mother was Jewish, but Couric was raised Episcopalian.[1] Couric’s maternal grandparents, Bert Hene and Clara L. Froshin, were the children of Jewish immigrants from Germany.[2] In a report for Today, she traced her paternal ancestry back to a French orphan who immigrated to the U.S. in the nineteenth century and became a broker in the cotton business.
Couric attended Arlington, Virginia public schools: Jamestown Elementary, Williamsburg Junior High, and Yorktown High School[3] and was a cheerleader.[4] As a high school student, she was an intern at Washington, DC all-news radio station WAVA. She enrolled at her father’s alma mater,[5] the University of Virginia, in 1975 and was a Delta Delta Delta sorority sister.
Isn't really that unusual because there are lots of em like Coco Channel and tennis up-and-comer Coco Vandeweghe. I'm also guilty of naming my daughter that.
"Its called being a grown-up."
Now that's funny. Who are you? Al Frankin??
Doesn’t bother me. Might bother Katie, I don’t know.
Said Luther: “My Katy makes the best beer in all of Germany.”
My great-grandma Katherina was Lutheran.
As usual, FR was ahead of the curve, well before most even knew of her...
February 12, 2008:
"In summary, I think she'd be a smart pic for a VP slot. I just wouldn't want her choosing names for anything (her children are Bristol, Piper, Track, and Willow). :-)"
(Of course, that was before Trig was born...and note that the 'pic' was spelled that way intentionally, with the thread focusing on her looks.)
