COMPLEX ERUPTION ON THE SUN: On August 1st around 0855 UT, Earth orbiting satellites detected a C3-class solar flare. The origin of the blast was sunspot 1092. At about the same time, an enormous magnetic filament stretching across the sun's northern hemisphere erupted. NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory recorded the action:

We will see how this particular CME effects earth on August 3rd. It will effect the area of earth facing the sun. Thank goodness I live on the dark side of the Earth.

It will effect the area of earth facing the sun. 1... That's "affect", not "effect".
2... The area facing the sun - Duh.
3... Which area is that, pray tell?

Okay, so should we be preparing for this or is it just a really cool thing to teach in my homeschool?

Wonder how this will affect the Space Station. Is that cooling system back up at the ISS or are they up for a heck of an episode?

Maybe there is something to it and maybe there is not. However, we are in the middle of summer so we would be wise to just shut down our computers tomorrow and head for the beaches. Why take any unnecessary chances?

Why would it take so long to get here. Doesn’t light take something like 8 minutes to reach earth from the sun. What speed do magnetic storms travel at? Where’s my sandwich?

From Wikipedia: “When the ejection reaches the Earth as an ICME (Interplanetary CME), it may disrupt the Earth’s magnetosphere, compressing it on the day side and extending the night-side magnetic tail. When the magnetosphere reconnects on the nightside, it creates trillions of watts of power which is directed back toward the Earth’s upper atmosphere. This process can cause particularly strong aurora also known as the Northern Lights, or aurora borealis (in the Northern Hemisphere), and the Southern Lights, or aurora australis (in the Southern Hemisphere). CME events, along with solar flares, can disrupt radio transmissions, cause power outages (blackouts), and cause damage to satellites and electrical transmission lines.”
Just think if we could capture a fraction of those trillions of watts.
