Why would it take so long to get here. Doesn’t light take something like 8 minutes to reach earth from the sun. What speed do magnetic storms travel at? Where’s my sandwich?

Yes, it does: about 8 minutes and 19 seconds.

It varies. This is a cloud of particles, not light, it usually takes a couple of days to make the trip. They can see the light from the event (8 minutes later), but the mass itself travels at its own slower speed.
