Rep. Anthony Weiner lights into GOP colleagues (No money to 911 responders)
The Washington Post ^ | July 30, 2010 | Emi Kolawole

Rep. Anthony Weiner (D-N.Y.) literally lost it on the House floor Thursday over his Republican colleagues' procedural objection to an amendment to the Public Health Services Act. The amendment would extend and improve health care benefits for 9/11 victims suffering from lasting health complications. Weiner is given to House floor drama. The New York Democrat is known for his often passionate and attention-grabbing remarks. He screamed for more than a minute Thursday, calling on Republican colleagues to vote 'no' against the bill, rather than object on procedural grounds.

So.

This was posted by a few different people yesterday. No one had any serious disscussion about the actual bill at hand at what actually happened. All that was discussed was Mr. Weiner's outburst. Everyone here seems to think he was like a little kid whining. I'll tell you what I saw.

I saw an add we can't really afford playing into a narrative that is hard to combat in a low information voter society.

The bill in question was slated to give 7.4 billion to help assist 911 first responders and others suffering from chemical exposures stemming from those attacks. It was to do this by cracking down on a so called tax loophole.

I understand Obongo is a social-islamo-anarcho-blacknational-facist and everything he does is bad. I get that its fine whatever. I'm just saying if you were undecided (and at this point that pretty much dictates low information voter) and the only adds you see are about how GOP won't give unemployment and won't even give 911 responders help with their health, how are you going take this?

Maybe I'm making a mountain out of a molehill but I think the GOP needs to come out and clarify they had legitimate objections to the funding of said bill. Unless they want to start going Davy Crockett style and say "Not yours to give".

The weiner is frustrated. He wants to get it on and she's always on the phone with Hillary.

All i know is once the govt starts giving the window never ever closes. Theres always a reason to continue giving money.
I’m a New Yorker and understand this is a special sensitive case but the first responders have great medical and pension. Will they give some back for a check today?
Another thing. There were plenty of volunteers down there as well. People went down and helped. Are they being helped or is it just union members once more that get the handouts?

So what’s stopping NY, a democratic party controlled state, from covering this?

So if there were *ten thousand* first responders, and each one wound up with some nightmare “chemical exposure” that crippled them, this is almost 800k per man.

What this is turning into, is for any first responder who came withing 20 blocks, and smelled dust, is suddenly disabled. It’s bullcrap. Where are the thousands and thousands who are truly disabled and not just snapping in for a fun round of government lotto?

So are you in favor of amnesty for illegal aliens? That’s what Republicans voted against, and everybody already knows it, even Ed Schultz.

I can’t believe Rep. King signed on to this bill.

It is over 7 BILLION dollars for just 25,000 people!

This was just another PORK bill for New York. They called it revenue neutral but it did so by raising taxes on some entities and then accounting gimmicks to move tax collections up earlier.

Do some people need help? Sure. But how are you going to prove that JOE SCHMO who was a construction worker in the area after 9/11 has lung problems from the dust of 9/11 and not smoking?????

How about this for a crazy idea. If a first responder got an injury at the WTC site, maybe they should go file a normal workers comp claim like they would have for a house fire the day before???

It wouldn't matter -- it never does. Only look at how the Dems were able to capitalize on the gubmint shutdown back in 95, they falsely accused Congress of doing it, when it was all Clinton and got people to swallow the idea that children would starve, Big Bird was gonna die because the GOP was so selfish.

The vast majority of people in this country cannot be bothered to understand reason and logic, especially when it comes to fiscal matters, they go on emotion. It is one of the reasons so many in the GOP cave all the time.

Rush had a piece on this recently...the dems do not need the GOP to vote on anything to pass it...there were enough dumocrap renegades who did not support the bill, precisely because it gave some form of amnesty to illegals...that was the reason it went down. Attached a rider to the give away bill and the dumocrat leadership felt it would pass, surprise, the public does not want amnesty and anyone who votes for it will be radioactive in the coming election.

There is a simple solution. Take oil from the moslem countried we are in, sell it, then fund the healthcare of those injured by 9/11.

Yeah, good luck with that. The Inept Party never clarifies its positions and, when it tries, the DBM won't cover it. I'm all for supporting the 911 first responders - they are valiant, courageous people who redefined courage and valor. By the same token, as another poster noted, they also have very generous health and pension plans.

The taxpayers shouldn't be on the hook twice to give the Dems another "feel good" mmoment.

And the reason the repugs opposed it....

As Rep. Bob Goodlatte explained... no such fund has been created for Katrina victims, members of the military injured or for the families of those killed in Iraq and Afghanistan, victims of the first World Trade Center bombing, victims of the USS Cole terrorist attack, or victims of the Oklahoma City Bombing. Goodlatte and many Republicans opposed the bill on the principle that the creation of special compensation funds is not the way to help the victims.

Yes. There is a commercial here. In the right hands it would demonstrate the idiocrisy and unstable mind of the left and how such people abuse the system.

I think it’s bad bad strategy on our part to always cave in for every democrat pork bill as long as it has an awesome PC “purpose”. Every bill in the last dacades has been “for the veterans”, “first responders”, “teachers,,” “for the children, etc,,,”, “for mom and apple pie”,, etc,,,

Weiner was like a whining little kid. And like a kid, you don’t decide to let him have his way because he throws a tantrum.

Why if the democrats wanted this to pass did they set it up to need a 2/3’s vote? This is as phoney as they come and shows that they have zero to run on this year!
